Just needed some advice. Right now Im thinking about Layer cutting my hair. I have fine hair and I was told that layer cutting it would give it that fullness effect. Usually i rollerset my hair to obtain that fullness, but i just wanted to try something different-plus an associate of mine has layers and her hair looks so nice. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I read in a hair book that layer cuts on fine hair are a bad idea. It said that fine-haired ladies need the bulk of blunt hair, and layers will take away that bulk. I don't know how accurate this is, but one of my fine-haired friends got a layer cut a few months ago, and her hair looked so thin afterwards. Whatever you decide, good luck!!!

Fine haired lady checking in, who has also had layers. Layers have a tendency to make fine hair look even thinner. When the hair is all one length it gives the illuson of thickness and looks much fuller.

I agree that it makes fine hair look thinner but I had layers anyway. Without it my hair looked so boring. But what I did was I used to get my hair blowdried instead of wet set so it would look thicker. And then she'd just bump it with the flat iron. It would stay like that for 2 weeks until I went back to the salon.

I have fine hair too and I agree, that it can make your hair look thinner. I have a layered cut that I am trying to grow out and notice that the hair looks and feels thicker in the parts where my hair is even and all the same length. I think they are cute cuts though, so just be sure that you really know what you want you hair goal to be, because the growing out period can be rough.

Girl I have fine hair and I'm trying to grow out layers for what seems like years now (actually only since January). Check out my avatar. It gets annoying when your trying to grow your hair out all one length.

I agree with the above it makes the hair look EXTREMELY thin!!!!

IMO, Hell to the No! I have layers and I hate them. I like thick and full looking ends. Layers make my ends look see through.

I am fine haired and have had long layers cut in my hair in the past. It also depends on how the layers are cut too. I have seen some layers that were a "choppy" cut and also some that were blended. The blended layers were what I had.

For me, the layers will make your hair look thinner if your hair is not curled. Meaning, if I went to the salon and didn't get a rollerset and just got my hair blow dried straight, it would just "lay" there and not do a thing and because its all different lengths, it just looked even thinner. Even if I let the stylist curled some of the layers, the curls will be gone the very next day. I got the best results when I rollerset it. The fullness at all different lengths made my hair looker look full overall.:) The tough part is growing the layers out though....:(

I agree with most of ladies stated that layers can make your hair look thinner....also is it possible to try a rollerset or having curls because this makes hair appear more fuller especially if you have fine & thin hair (look at my fotki) this is what I have to do to have volume....hth:)

I think layers look great on short hair. Not sure what it looks like on longer, thin, hair. My hair is above my shoulders and I love my layers. People always seem to think I have thick hair.

I would say definitely not. I agree that layers seem to make fine hair thinner. I was under the opinion that layers was meant to give shape to hair that is very thick and heavy looking. Fine hair ussually does not have this problem. I have fine hair and my hair looks it's best when it is all one length with a very blunt cut to give it fullness.

Additionally, you should really give a lot of thought to layers. As previously mentioned, you hear a lot of women talking about how difficult it is to grow layers out. So if you decide to do it, just realize its a big commitment and you should really want them. good luck deciding!

Just a sidenote to OP: I have had my fine hair cut all at one length while it both long as it is now and also it was once cut to chin length (after being long for a while). I have to agree that even though it was the same head of hair, it still appeared to be a million times thicker when it was cut shorter (blunt cut), but chin length. I even asked my stylist why it didn't appear to be as thick as it grew longer at one length and she said the shorter layers (wasn't layered but she referred to them as layers; I am talking about 1 inch or 2 inches in my case) at the nape give the hair more volume and causes it to appear thicker. But its quite different as the hair grows longer b/c you have no more "short" layers under all the hair; everything is just considered long... (hope that makes sense)

Pros:

Full bouncy curls, volumizes hair, Beautiful styling.

Cons:

When it comes to growing it out it will be a pain. Also, when your hair is layered, you ALWAYS have to have a curl or bump on the ends or it ends up looking very thin and uneven. Forget about wearing it straight.

I had layers with fine hair, but my hair was about chin length. It did look thinner as it got longer. Now that my hair is about APL, I would not get layers because I'm afraid that it will make my ends look thinner and I hate see-through ends.

Ladies thank you so much for your advice. After reading all the post the part that worries me the most is growing my hair back. Right now Iam so close to APL and i really dont want to mess it up-so I've decided to work on thickening my hair up more before i even think about layer cutting-Thanks again.

I think that it depends less on the coarseness of your hair than on the density of your hair. If the thickness of your hair is medium to thick, go for it. If it's on the thin side, you may want to reconsider. I have fine hair that I wore in layers (longer layers) in college. It worked out well for me and I got lots of compliments. However, there was no room for error in the breakage department. Also, I was sporting straightened natural hair that had more body than my relaxed hair does now. I'm scared to add layers presently because I'm scared my ends will look thin. Good luck in your decision. If you really want to try it, make sure your stylist understands your hair type and the look you want to achieve.

P.S. Just realized you already made up your mind. Guess I should have read the thread first.

 Thanks for the input though:)

I like to layer thin fine hair in long layers and cut with a razor . with a rollerset or even pin curls you get a full head of curls not just on the ends.
cutting with a razor gives you a feathered look.

I'm afraid of the razor. I had a stylist use it once and I had so many splits!!! You don't get more splits that usual with a razor???

A few years ago I decided not to trim my hair and have been trying to grow out my layers. I cut my top when I was thirteen...so many years later, I am trying to grow it back....it's growing, but it's been a slooooow process. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't have done it.

I'm on the fence. I'm a fine haired lady who has longer layers. Truth is.... I like my layers. When my hair's all one length it's a lil boring and it looks flat and thin. When I have my layers in and my hair is curled (rollers or knot-set) it's great.

I'm am too on the fence...Layers if kept long I think make hair look a little thicker. But I've always been told that a blunt cut is always the best.

Nope...been there...done that... Every hairdresser I'ver ever went to wanted to cut my hair in layers. And everyone is right about it being a bear to grow them out. It's like a bad cycle. You always have to curl them either by rolling up the hair at night or using a curling iron (our worst enemy) way to often to maintain a look. In the long run it has always done more damage to my hair despite the "cute" look when it was curled. Also I got more breakage on my bottom layers because there was not enough other hair to provide some protection for the length of the hair....thus you killed any growth you got because you HAD to keep cutting those bottom layers. Think about it. I hope this makes sense.

I think you would end up regretting it, it you want to grow it long. Protective styles will not be as easy when it comes to bunning. You will have a thin bun. I used to have layers, and they were a major factor in my hair taking so long to grow out at the sides and back. It takes a longer time to go from 4 inches to bra strap than from shoulder length to bra strap. And you have to work it a lot more to get it to look just right, which means you are tugging and twirling and trying to get that CUTE STYLE. You end up using the curling iron or the comb more. And you worry your ends to death, if you are not careful. I really regret my layers and would never ever ever do that again. bonjour

ooh ain't this the truth. i had a shrt halle berry and my hair just grew out in the same layers. I hate it. Not only is my hair fine, but the density is on the thin side.

my hair is super thick. i like the way my new layered cut reduces the fullness of my style. so i would not recommend it for somone wanting their hair look fuller or thicker.

I had layers for years and couldn't understand why my hair was always breakage city. I don't know why layered cuts cause more breakage. But I did a lot of reading on it and found that experts recommend that growing hair all one length helps it to grow faster and healthier.

I wouldn't recommend layered cuts if you're fine-haired and trying to grow it... ;)
