I am a bit disappointed because I don't think they look worthy of $55, but I guess I can take a much needed break from my hair now:

I used Cassia for the first time yesterday before I went and got cornrowed up (Thank you Samanthajones for the instant help with the Cassia) Cassia pix are in fotki

UPDATE: I found a braider who is willing to do it for $40, she was recommended by my Aunt (Why did I not think of asking my Aunt before I started searching)
Maybe I will try her after I take these cornrows out, depends on what my pocket looks like.

It doesn't look bad, but I can get that where I live for about $30-35, and that still may be too much for others. I guess it depends on where you live? But.... the priviledge to leave you hair alone for a while....

PRICELESS!!!:grin:
 
what's Cassia?

and I got a homegirl right up the street who would hook your cornrows up for just twenty.
 
they look fine to me. what were you expecting? i would have to pay that much if i went to a shop and i live in IL. the only way that would be cheap is if i let some young girl do it at her house.
 
Avoid that particular braider again even at half price. Just make it work for a few weeks while using that time to seek a replacement braider.

They're not terrible, but that doesn't look like the work of an experienced braider and I think you deserve better. :) (esp. at that price) Did it take an hour even?

eta: I know you didn't ask for particulars but I want to share a few examples of what I see since most posters like them.

1. The partings are off, especially those center braids in the first pic. I can see the hairs toward the middle that are preventing the braids from having the uniform look that make cornrows look classy.

2. The braids are started in an odd fashion. See second pic, second braid from the ear. Is that underhand or something?

3. Some braids veer closer to one side thus leaving large, unnecessary gaps. (2nd pic braids 3 & 4 from the ear)

4. That braid that goes from the hairline back and then makes a right shows me that the braider wasn't sure how to distribue the hair on your hair evenly and, therefore, did not deserve $55. Is that really a good billboard of the braiders work? I've seen cornrows that are worth more than the usual fee but these aren't those. I think you deserve to feel good about what you paid for. I braid and I tend to be eagle-eyed about braiding. :)

Cassia is Neutral Henna. It gives strength and shine without the color. It was my first use and I can't tell if it did any of that for me, but oh well..it was fun!

My thoughts exactly. It took her almost two hours:nono: That should have taken only about an hour. She said she was a professional, has been braiding for more than 17yrs:look:

I am quite disappointed. She could have atleast given me straight parts and sides that look the same (yes one side looks different from the other side because her parts were not straight:ohwell:)

And on top of all that she made a comment about how "our" hair can only be maintained by keeping it short or keeping it braided...Well I just had to refer her to LHCF...I just had to!

Phew! You and I are seeing eye-to-eye. :) I didn't want to make you feel bad about how you look. I just wanted to make it clear that your disappointment was founded. Her 17 years may have not been in cornbraiding. I might charge for individuals or twists or grooming locs, but I only cornbraid on my children or myself. I'm pretty good, but I don't feel that my experience in that area is worth charging someone especially not that much for a basic design.

Lesson learned, right? I've had a few of those myself. I suggest you start practicing on yourself. Once you get one good set of parts, you can recycle them for a few rebraids. Double mirrors and a good rat tail help. Start with larger braids and then put a pretty clip on flower to the side of the ends if your hang time isn't what you'd like it to be.

I like your braids Mandy.:yep:

I wanted my hair cornrowed two summers ago and the lady wanted 65 dollars:perplexed. I turned right around and left. They ought to know that we can go to the local high school and ask these boys with these beautiful braids who in the school did their hair.

I refuse to pay over 40 for cornrows.
 
I think that is an average price for braids, but it doesn't look like it was done by an experienced braider. I would probably take them out :ohwell: By the way, I love your puff Mandy!
 
Hey, just rock 'em. What else can you do?:ohwell: It can be hard to find braiders in certain places. At least they look OK enough to last a few weeks. BTW, your hair grew a lot!:congrats:

Uhmm, some enlightenment needed here Patient1: Considering I ignore fashion like it's a foreign language, what is old-fashioned way of starting a cornrow? :giggle: Can you do two cornrows one old-fashioned and one modern so I can see? I'd hate to volunteer to do someone's hair and do it the unsophisticated way. :look:

Mandy, $50 was daylight robbery. But at least you can rest your hair. (And to think I used to do braid extension singles like I wear for $60. We're talking microbraids! :wallbash: No wonder I quit. :lachen: )

The price is high for a hour of so-so work. That's why I learned to braid -when I lived in California braiders were just outrageous. Dropping a $100 for some braids was Carraaazeeto me. These aren't to bad you still look nice - like someone said just rock these jokers like you love them for a few weeks and never again.
 
It looks good to me, I like it alot, and yes your hair has grown alot and it looks so good! I wouldn't go back to that braider, that style should have cost $20-$25 if that.
 
Mandy, I think you over paid and I agree with P1. But rock them for a few weeks and avoid her in the future.

That is all your hair right??? People only charge about 25 bucks to braid without extensions. (Your puff is pretty!)
 
where are you guys getting hair braiders. i cant find one for less than 50 with my real hair :(. 70 with extentions

Where I live it is very difficult. She was actually the cheapest I found. Everyone starts at $60 without extra hair and about $80 with extra hair:ohwell:

Anyway..I guess the search continues.
 
Often, stylists charge for "their time" (ie labor costs... like mechanics, I suppose). . .
 
IA with Napp. Shops around my way charge $50 and up for cornrows now. The African Braiding Shops charge $75 plus for cornrow extensions! I don't know about you but cornrows only last me 2 weeks before they lose their luster and become frizzy.

I suggest finding a neighborhood high schooler for a nice basic design.

See where I live I can't find someone like that. Not trying to be stereotypical or anything, but I live in a predominantly white neighborhood in Edmonton Canada and braiding is not popular at all around these parts, hence the ridiculous prices around the city:ohwell:
 
i think they look good and what you paid is somewhat reasonable


here shops charge $60-$80 just for your basic straight back cornrows
