A Word Of Caution About Washing Hair Daily

i don't think i'd wash my scalp with shampoo daily. i'm rather into CW. that might be okay to do. but really, our scalps usually need the extra moisture. some have had lots of success with daily washing. others (like myself) are having a lot of success with daily rinsing! that is working very well for me! as black women we've been warned for years about the harms of water. i think now a lot of us are seeing that water can benefit some of us. our bodies are mostly water, water is the ultimate moisture. if you can take it, i'd try rinsing daily and running some conditioner into your hair. i just posted about this and a lot of people replied that their hair grew quickly and loved the additional moisture. i think if you listen to your hair it'll tell you what it loves or hates. :)

but i would not advise you to shampoo the scalp everyday and i'd never advise you to shampoo the hair. the hair doesn't need that at all. i think the CWC method works great!

This is an interesting thread. This subject has sparked several questions in my mind...

Would it be ok to shampoo the SCALP daily, even though the shampoo will touch your hair in the process???
The reason I ask this question is because we wash our skin everyday and was wondering if washing the scalp daily would reap the same benefits.

Would it be okay to shampoo the HAIR daily if you moisture your hair with oil or a moisturizing leave-in product afterwards? And what if you use a shampoo with non-harsh ingredients?
I ask this because it's always said the shampoo strips our hair of natural oils, which may in turn stunt growth. Would applying oil or a leave-in help with that?

If one were to rinse with water or co-wash daily, wouldn't it be best to rinse or co-wash hair that is free of products?
I ask this because I would think rinsing or co-washing the hair with products would cause major build-up. You would need to shampoo your hair if you use products. I feel rinsing and cowashing is best for hair that has no products to begin with.

What do you ladies think about that?

Hi Ladies,

I think that if you are using shampoos containing sls and parabens everyday would be like stripping paint from wooden surfaces! I have found a really good shampoo and conditioner range containing Dead Sea Minerals which does not contain parabens or sls and does not strip my hair of its natural oils.
I wash my hair every 4 days because of the cold weather but when the weather warms up I will be doing daily CWs, because I sweat a lot and sweat is acidic.

Daily washing is ok as long as you avoid certain chemicals in your hair products. Yes, our hair is very fragile, but cleanliness, moisture and keeping the hair pores free from clogging is the key to good hair growth and health.

I wash daily and have been doing so for years with no problems. I wouldn't go a day without washing any other part of my body, and I won't go a day without washing my scalp. Daily washing has definitely not stunted my hair growth in the least bit.

i would not advise to shampoo scalp or hair daily. remember that we shower everyday but we have to replace lost moisture with oils or a body lotion.
Think about this... after you wash your body in the shower with body wash or soap, risne off, get out and dry off, and apply lotion or oil to keep your skin moist...
So what would be really wrong with shampooing your scalp, rinse off, get out and dry off, and apply oil, leave-in, or moisturizer... what's the difference?
The only way I see shampooing as drying is if you wash with a shampoo with harsh ingredients and then when you get done you do not apply anything to your hair... do you get what I'm saying?

thats why you have to use a conditioner that isnt heavy to do CO washes. like when one used humectress or kenra MC for CO washing, that will definitely cause build up on your scalp. i always advise people to CO wash with light conditioners like V05. even suave conditioners are too heavy for me. rinsing did not help because it doesnt make sense to rinse out all the moisture and then replace it with maybe a leave in then rinse out the next day. that will definitely cause buildup because water cannot wash out build up. trying a clarifying conditioner like V05 kiwi and lime will help. because it prevents and removes minimal build up but doesnt dry out the hair.

i have been CO washing for 2 years
What would be the difference in using a clarifying conditioner versus a NON-HARSH shampoo for getting rid of buildup???

my hairs kinda oily though since taking flaxseed...i think daily washing would help me get rid of the excess oil (LOL i never thought i would say my was was excessively moisturized!)

I've been thinking daily washing could help me too for blemishes.

I've noticed that my scalp is fairly oily. I also either use S-Curl or grease on my hair. I've noticed that my face is clear except for around my hairline. I always have blemishes around the sides of my face and sometimes on my forehead. I'm thinking it's from not washing my hair frequently.

I'm just going to experiment with either shampoo (non-harsh) daily, cowashing daily, or rinsing daily to see which one works for me.

Hey poohbear, if you have any old shampoos knocking around, just dilute them with water, or purified/distilled water. just a lilly tip to save u some dough.

my point is that we shampooing dries out the skin or scalp. how about people that prefer not to clog their pores by putting stuff on their scalp???

I'm sorry but I do not understand what you're asking... What do u mean by 'we shampooing'? And what were u referring to when u said 'stuff'... shampoo or conditioner or products?

sorry it was a typo. lol. i meant shampooing dries out the skin or scalp. when i say stuff, i mean oils and leave ins and daily moisturisers and all that

Oh okay, lol! Now I understand. Yeah, I can see daily water rinsing or daily co-washing as effective methods for someone who doesn't use oils, leave-ins, etc. on a daily basis... but not for someone who does use all that stuff because of buildup. ;)
