Achieving dimension with commerical hair color

I have a question for those who color their hair. I switched to Ion Inspired by Nature to cover grey hair but I find it drying, despite the oils. I added the pre and post coloring options to reduce the affects. I have used Clairol Semi-Permanent in the past but the color seems very flat. I am using a color close to my own dark brown. Is it there a way to use it without getting that flatness in the result? Or should I stick with the permanent hair color and use pre and post coloring care to protect the strands? I appreciate your input.

I don’t have a lot of answers. I moved to a higher quality color. Im using Madsion Reed. Its more expensive but it doesn't cause any issues with my hair.

Maybe try a permanent color from Ulta. They aren't all made the same.

I also hear that Schwarzkopf is a good brand and less expensive. I haven't tried it but I plan to next year.

I dont have any suggestions for semi-permanent colors.

When you say achieving dimension, are you talking about just the color or the color and how your hair feels afterwards? Just wanted to clarity because there seems to be 2 different questions in your OP

I mean I want the color to have some subtle variation like natural hair. My hair seems come out one note with the semi-permanent, and doesn't look quite natural.
