Any tips for cornrows?????

A trusted college friend of mine is going to put my hair in cornrows on Friday. It is the first time that I put my hair in this style and I was just wondering if anyone can give me advice on what to put in my hair?? My friend told me to bring grease and that was all. I am hoping that this style will last at least one month.

you should get a good braid spray. i use Sta Sof Fro, but there are many others that you can find at your local bss. i spray it on my braids once every day. that's actually the only thing i do to my braids & i've had cornrows twice this summer and.. no breakage.

ITA. I dont think grease would be the best option becasue you will get lots of buildup and it doesnt moisturize your hair.

I just finished taking my cornrows out and here are the products I use:

one more thing.. IMO it would be a good thing for you to pick up some Surge spray for your edges. i use it mixed w/ sta sof fro on mine to make sure they dont get dry and come out.

I use the same shampoo & conditioner that I use when not wearing cornrows (Keracare Shampoo & Humecto Conditioner)

When I do corn rows, I don't use alot of products. I just put a moisturizer(usually shea butter) all over once on freshly blow dried hair and then corn row it.

Thanks for the tips. I have another question. At night I wear a satin hair bonnet. Can I still wear it with the cornrows? And how do I wash my hair with cornrows?

Yes, however, I think that a satin/silk scarf would be better, 'cause a bonnet might rub up against your edges.

As for washing them, I don't actually wash my cornrows.. I just clean my scalp with SeaBreeze...

I used s curl spray on my braids every day and washed once a week. I got in the shower and let the water run over my head for a minute then add the shampoo and gently run my fingers through each part then rinse and repeat then condition. I don't mind my cornrows being tight but if yours are loose washing my make them fuzzy.

Ive never bee nable to wash my kane/cornrows wthout them becoming a sorry state .

The products which i use before i kanerow are:

Surge 14
Ors olive lotion
Sulphur8 braid spray (it doesnt stop itchin for me but it helps moisturise and enhaces growth
coconut,olive,castor oil when needed

I don't put anything in my hair when it's braided. I just keep it clean and spray with plain water whenever I need moisture. I wash it once every 2 weeks. I find that all the sprays and oils and other stuff makes the braids smell and I just can't STAND that, nor can I stand to have oil/grease sitting on my hair and scalp. YUCK! I find that plain old water provides enough moisture for my hair and scalp and thus allows me to go 2 weeks between washes because there's noting up there to smell or go stale.

I wash braids as follows: I dilute nexxus therappe shampoo or some other moisturizing shampoo (CON is good 2nd choice for me when I have braids) with a bit of water in a cup and on dry hair, apply to my scalp in between the parts and message in well, trying not to disturb the braids too much (this works well whether its cornrows or individual braids, just apply the 'poo to the scalp as best as can, messaging in gently). Once 'poo applied to entire scalp, then apply down the lenght of braids, NOT up and down 'cause will disrupt braid, but smooth gently DOWN the lenght in order to keep braids in place as much as possible. Then, get in shower and allow water to run through hair, gently squeezing out the shampoo, try not to rub or move hair in different directions, but allow the water to run DOWN hair and squeeze braids, messaging scalp and squeezing braids so that the shampoo is rinsed out. Once done rinsing, I'm done. That's it for 2 weeks. When I remove braids, that's when I do the deep conditioning, etc. I do not use a conditioner or anything else because that's too much manipulation of the braids and they will look to "worn" if I keep washing. This is where a conditioner/'poo combo may work for some but I found therappe to be excellent for cleaning without drying hair out. I tie my braids up immediately after washing so that they "lie down" and dry flat. I sleep with a scarf and every few days, spray with distilled water to "freshen up". That's it. My hair grows like weeds with this method.

I just took my cornrows out last Saturday and when I had them in, I tied my hair down with a satin scarf every night. I had my cornrows while I was on vacation so after swimming I'd just rinse the braids with water while in the shower. I sprayed braid sheen on my hair every few days. I didn't do it every day because I didn't want to have too much buildup on my scalp. I kept my cornrows in for 4 weeks and when I took them out I washed and DEEP conditioned my hair. I'm debating whether I should get them again or get my touch-up.

Do you find that just water leaves a dewws or stale smell in your hair .

How thin are your cornrows ?

Becasue i get my mine quite thin and because my hair is so thick after 2 weeks i can barely see my scalp .

Water does not leave a buildup, smell, or stalesness -- that's why I use water -- it's neutral and moisturizes and freshens without a residue of any kind. I don't like "thin" braids becasue too much hazzle and time putting in and taking out. I get "medium" sized cornrows or individuals, about pencil sized or larger. My hair is really thick too (nappy,nappy 4b!) and while I cannot see my scalp, I can "find" it by touch and separating the braids where the parts are.
