In hair purgatory
I love buns and now i am finally able to make them again. but my hair cannot slicked back with out gel or EQP mango butter(but it aint cheap). has there been anyone who grew their hair out w gel? i only use fantasia ic blue, ecostyler gels and Xtreme gel all which have no alchol. and 2 are aloevera gel based.

I just want to bun every week like i used to.

There was a thread around here a long time ago where a member's neice grew her hair down her back by just gelling her hair into a ponytail with cheap brown gel- it doesn't contain alcohol. Yes, I believe you can grow your hair out using gel as long as it doesn't have alcohol in it. Just make sure your ends are moisturised and that they are neatly tucked- not just balled up and you should be fine. The title of the thread is "Is brown gel bad" or something like that. I'm going to try to find it for you.

Re: What's Wrong With Brown Gel, Anyway?
I have a huge jar of pro style and have only used it once. The color kind of turns me off.:perplexed Plus it's a mess when it comes time to wash it out. Nevertheless...

Short story... I have a niece who wore a ponytail EVERYDAY for 2 years and she would use the brown gel to hold her hair down. This was the only product that she used in her hair. No conditioner, no moisturizer. Just wash and gel. Nothing else. When she first started to wear her hair this way it was shoulder length. She would put it in a ponytail and wrap it in a bun.

One day (after 2 years) she let her hair down and it fell to her waist! Beautiful!:yep:

So that led me to believe that...

1. Brown gel is not bad for your hair.
2. Low/no manipulation is the best option.
3. Any hair type is capable of growing long.

If brown gel works for you then go for it, by all means.

I've grown my hair to APL twice in the past 4 years wearing gelled buns the majority of the time. I don't use the gels with alcohol or manipulate my hair once the gel has set but i don't know if that really makes a difference.

Yep, that's the difference. Alcohol dries hair and makes it break and our hair loves no manipulation :yep:

Yes! :yep: Buns are how I retained most of my growth. I don't use gel on the length of my pony, though. I use gel only to smooth down the hair from my hairline to the ponytail holder. I can't stand the fuzzies around my hairline. I used a cheap non-alcohol gel at first. I have been using Xtreme gel for about two years now.

I had grown my hair out w/gelled buns. I used Long Aid Curl activator gel on the bun part, because it's very moisturizing, but I'd use Fantasia to hold down the front and the edges. It can be done:yep:.

Are you all washing every day to get the old gel out, or once its set you just keep wearing it like that all week without redoing?

I have been doing this for the past couple of months. I do take a break one week per month when I get my hair straightened out or try a new style. I use lots of S-curl, dab of IC gel, and water. I finish it off with oil sheen. I try to keep my hair like this for at least 3 days. If my hair feels like it has product overload or my scalp gets itchy I wash it. Sometimes, I will rinse it out the same day if I use too much gel. I pin my ends up lightly with a couple bobby pins. I have also been using my scarf and wearing my scarf all day and my hair is in a nice pony bun underneath. I like this because not that I am transitioning it is allowing my hair to be trained to lay down. My waves are also popping.
