I was in a mall based salon checking out their line of Morrocan Oil products. One of the stylists, a caucasian male, came over to ask if I had any questions. In discussing the products, he stated that in the salon, he applies the protein mask to the roots and the moisturizing treatment/condish to the ends. I wondered what you all thought of that? Sounds good but then I wondered would the protein condish on the roots, once its rinsed out, need to be followed with a moisturizing condish? This occurred to me as I was driving home or else I would have asked him. Any thoughts? I also wondered whether conditioning this way would throw off the balance of the hair strands, where the roots are more protein enhanced while the length is moisturized...would that cause breakage of the strand?

That sounds backwards. Because the roots are newer, it shouldn't need as much protein (or any at all) because it hasn't been around as long and therefore hasnt been exposed to much damage. The ends on the other hand have encountered alot of damage from being around for years (time would depend on how long your hair is). I apply my protein treatments to my relaxed hair, focusing on the ends and I don't focus on my natural hair because I know my natural hair has not been damaged by heat, relaxer, or just from being around for so long. I think the roots need moisture and the ends need both moisture and protein.

This seems to make more sense. Still an interesting concept though...I wish he could come explain his reasoning for doing it that way.
I don't mess with protein anyway, but good question.

I've actually done the opposite and found out about that through curlisto products. They have a repair styling cream that you put midshaft and work through to the ends. OMG my hair was soooo nice!!

Did the same thing with curl junkie curl fix which is a protein treatment that you can use as a leave in and it works well also.
