Extra Conditioners Are Not Necessary

For those of you ladies who dc every time you wash, what is the point in buying rinse out conditioners as well? I understand some of you do henna, amla, indigo treatments, and cowash but disregard that. I just realized this after going through my wash routine. I usually dc after I shampoo my hair, but if I dc every week I never get a chance to use conditioner. So, what is the point in having a rinse out conditioner? It's basically collecting dust. Eventually I may or may not use it, but what's the point? I may completely illiminate it from my budget or buy like 1 conditioner for the whole year if that's the case.

Does this make sense to anyone. Please chime in.

I use regular condioners alot more during the summertime to cowash...

Like you, I DC after I shampoo which I only do once a week but, if I happen to need a quick moisture fix (like when I henna'd) midweek then I will cowash...

So I feel like conditioners are just something good to have around

^^^^I understand some people cowash, but for those of us who do not buying rinse out conditioners would be unnecessary. I never cowash even in the summer and if I do need extra moisture in the middle of the week I just add more of my favorite moisturizer.

Let's just say you don't cowash ever, you don't do henna/amla/indigo treatments. You just shampoo, dc, detangle, and moiturize every week. Wouldn't buying rinse out conditioners be unnecessary?

Dc's are usually more expensive then regular rinse out conditioners. I need a lot to detangle and using a dc for that purpose would kill my pockets. I switched it up and use 1 rinse out conditioner to detangle and dc with, suave. Its working better like this for me and its cheap.

I would usually keep the rinse out around for serious detangling sessions. I didn't want to use up my dc (which was usually expensive) on detangling, so the Suave/v05/Tresemme is what I'd use.

I shampoo nearly every time I wash my hair, so a rinse out conditioner is necessary to replenish some of the moisture the shampoos removed. As LC stated, they are excellent for detangling as well since I cannot detangle after shampooing. Finally, not all DCs give me the slip I want so I'll follow it up with a rinse out that does. HTH!

how do you detangle? sometimes i detangle while the DC is in my hair, before i rinse it out, or while im applying it...alot of times use the rinse out to detangle because its cheap, and comes in a bigger size than my DCs...but if you personally dont use it, then you dont need it...or like you said, just keep one on hand for emergencies or if you ever decide to use it, but it doesnt make any sense to have like 5 bottles of conditioner that you never use...if you wanna use up extra condish then you could mix some in a spray bottle with water and use it as a moisturizing spritz through out the day...i even use some rinseouts as leave-ins.

I don't think I've every detangled my hair with a deep conditioner, so for me a rinse out conditioner is essential for detangling and I use it whether I deep condition or not.

I dry detangle my hair while I apply my oil prepoo. If I need to detangle further I do so with my DC. I'm still experimenting to see which detangling method I want to continue using.

Personally, I make a lot of funky smelling DC concoctions using kitchen stuff, so I always follow-up with a RO condish so my hair doesn't smell. I also condition my hair daily. But, sometimes, like you said, I DC with a good commercial product and don't add anything else and just rinse that out.

You don't have to buy anything you're not using. Store bought conditioners are simply for convenience - not a necessity. The point is you have to condition your hair with something but it could be herbs, or some other homemade prep. The thing is that homemade stuff is messy, and time consuming and not everyone feels like going through that everytime they wash their hair.

Just use whatever's working for your hair. I don't use conditioner to detangle. The products I use soften my hair during the wash/condition phase. Then I combout when I'm done and don't usually have much trouble with that.

I don't feel the need for the quick fix condidtioners because like you I oil pre-poo and I DC after I shampoo. I don't co-wash and if I choose to, I just buy a sample size at aveda. Otherwise, no need for instant conditioner in my regimen.

However, you could pre-poo with the instant conditioner, thus the need for one.

Aren't your DCs wash-out conditioners? When I do a protein (reconstructor) DC, I always follow with a moisturizing conditioner. Because my protein DCs aren't pure protein but rather also have moisturizing properties (hence reconstructors), I rarely do moisturizing DCs; in between DCs, I do regular moisturizing wash-out conditioners.

AO GPB is one product I use both to DC or regular condition. If I apply to dry hair, it works as a DC ad I leave it in for 15 minutes. If I apply to wet hair, it works as a conditioner and I wash it out sooner. As I mentioned, when I use it as a DC, I will follow that with a moisturizing DC. I DC every other wash, which works out to be once a week. On the wash where I don't DC, I will use a regular moisturizing washout conditioner.

These days I'm only washing every 2 weeks so I just use my DC. When schedule permits me to wash every week, I use a rinse out one week and a DC the next.

I haven't used a rinse out to detangle with in a long time. Because of this thread, I will revisit.

I see what you mean, OP. I haven't used regular conditioner in a while, but mainly because I'm in a weave right now, so it's easier just to use my Hair One Cleanser (shampoo and deep conditioner in one) once a week, and leave it at that. But when I'm out of weave, and I feel like a cowash, that's when the regular conditioner comes in handy.

I feel like conditioner is necessary for my hair if I want it to be detangled. But even if one does not use store bought conditioners people from tribes use other ingredients from nature in their hair as a "conditioner."

For me it is necessary--even oil is a conditioner.

For me, conditionners are just a mix of water, oils and emulsifiers for mix both.. so unnecessary for me as I already use water and oils.

I don't cowash and I dont DC. BUT I only use conditioners for get slipping when detangling time, because I like BTMS(a detangling agent) I only use garnier fructis triple nutrition just for detangling after my deep treatments(ayurvedic).

I love your natural hair pic- it's too cute

I use a RO conditioner than can be left in when I twist my hair and then every other day to moisturize.

I am not saying that conditioners are not entirely necessary, I just happened to realize I use my deep conditioner for a deep treatment every time I wash (which is once a week). Therefore, I do not have the chance to use a rinse out conditioner (one that is specifically for that purpose ie. suave, tresemme, garnier, aussie moist) if I deep condition every week. I use AOHSR which can also be used as a rinse out, but I do not use it that way.

I dry detangle my hair while I prepoo with oil, shampoo, then apply deep conditioner (detangle further), rinse, and style. I wasn't necessarily asking whether you should use conditioners or whether they are good for our hair (I tried to word it the best I could so it would be clear), I was making an observation in hopes that someone else may come across this if their regimen is similar to my own. With my regimen I realized that if I dc after I shampoo, I hardly have use for my "regular" rinse out conditioner (Suave Naturals Coconut).

I don't cowash, and I don't use conditioners like the one stated above to moisturize.

I hope this makes sense now. I appreciate all the feedback.

Yeah I feel you OP, there's no room for a rinse out conditioner in my regimen, so I don't waste money buying them. I poo wash and deep condition with some form of cholesterol conditioner in a cup and rarely detangle. My natural 4b hair is doing just fine.

I DC once a week so I started using my RO conditioner along with amla oil as an overnight pre poo every Friday night - like right now! I guess you could say I've found a use for it to use it up.

my dc doesn't have cones so it is ineffective in detangling purposes. only cones really give me the slip to run a comb through my hair, and I find that in HH or aussie moist. If i tried to just use HSR I would have a tangled mess. A soft and shiny tangled mess, but still...

I'm sure other ladies have said this but I actually need two or three of them for when I stretch my relaxers for the slip and ease of detangling. Deep conditioners are sometimes too pricey for this and don't provide enough slip to melt away knots and soften new growth.
