I was just about to make an appt with one of my friends' friend to color my hair but then i thought-"silly me" I must first see what my fellow sistas have to say about coloring! So guys please dish about

-whether i have to change my shampoos or conditioners
-is it even smart to color my hair as a natural
-is there a specific way it must be applied(just so i can call her out if i see her doing something she shouldnt be!)
-any precautions i must take days before the appt
and -whether i should color or not.

and when i say color i mean a few highlights in the front....

Thanks!!

hi..i'm natural and i get my hair highlighted regularly--i don't do much of anything different, but i do make sure my napps are very moisterized, i have a phobia of my hair being dry. oh and i switched to a cholesteral condish treatment. that's about it. hopes this helps.

I'm natural and I have dyed my hair everything from platinum blonde to purple; it's currently dark burghundy, I don't do anything special as far as dying it (I do my own color, though) and I don't really have to do much as far as after care except use the color protect conditioner that comes with the kit every couple weeks or when I remember. Now, when my hair was blonde, or various shades of blonde or brown- basically when it was BLEACHED- I sure had to do more to condition it, but it wasn't really that big of a deal; I see more complex conditioning routines here on this board with women who aren't bleached than what I did when I was bleached. Being natural gives you a lot more freedom when it comes to color, your hair has a bit more ability to handle the chemicals.

Using a color protecting/enhancing shampoo/conditioner is recommended to preserve your color treatment. Pureology is one that I've tried and really like.

Natural hair in good condition is the best candidate for color treatments so you should have no worries.

Generally for hilites, the hair must be bleached to a certain level first and may or may not require toning. Much of what needs to be done depends on what color you hope to achieve. How is she going to do it? Freehand, foils, cap?

It doesn't hurt to deep condition your hair a couple of times prior to your color service.

I've had hilites in my natural hair since November and I have had absolutely no problems, even though I had been slacking on my deep treatments.

Let us know how things turn out.
