So I was in Ulta last night looking to pick up a chi, and one of the stylists there demo'd the nano technology one on another customer's hair. He sprayed some Chi heat protectant on her hair (which I noticed had alcohol in it), and as he did a spiral curl on her hair, the iron looked like it started smoking. He said that the iron uses moisture on the hair and creates steam out of it. Is that true? The chi with nano techology supposedly has one heat setting and it adjusts to your hair and the pressure you apply. The more pressure you apply, the hotter it gets. He also said you could hold the iron on a section of your hair for 10 mins and it wouldn't burn b/c of the heat distribution system  Anybody know anything about this? Is it normal for the regular basic chi to smoke/steam?

I'm not sure, but I'd rather find out from the maker(s) of Chi then to hear it from a stylist.

I doubt there's a need for anyone to hold the iron on a section of their hair for 10 minutes. It doesn't take that long to many any curl.

Yeah, he was just trying to explain the efficiency of the heating system. Allandra, if you have a chi or have used one in the past, have you noticed any smoking or steaming coming from the unit?

I've had a Chi. The only time that it smoked or steamed was when I sprayed on too much product and didn't give it time to penetrate my hair or when my hair wasn't fully dry. On fully dried hair, I never noticed steam. Also, I used to go to a stylist that used the Chi and I don't remember any smoking or steaming there either.

I don't have a chi. I have a ION Anti-Frizz Ceramic Straightening Flat Iron 1-1/2 "

Hmph. I've seen smoke coming from it (could be from hair care products tho). That sucker can get hot. I love it though, and it works great.

Yeah, when I use product, it smokes big time, but I am a very heavy handed when it comes to product. The smaller the amount of product, the less the smoke for me. I think it goes for everyone.

Hey Sweetpea, last weekend my mother and I went flat iron shopping at Ulta. All the stylist there were using the Chi Nano and one offered to try it on my mother's hair. No smoke. It did a good job, so she purchased it. The next day we both washed our hair and put very little of the Silk infusion. Talk about the bomb results. The least amount of product, the better. But most heat appliances will let out a little smoke if the hair is moist or has a sufficient amount of product on it. I've personally been looking into the sedu, but I'm tempted to copy my mother. I have never been able to get such great results outside of a salon. It's that serious!

OP I think that dude was singing a special song and dance for you all. He was just making stuff up as he went along, probably put too much product on her hair. I have never heard of CHI being marketed as a steam iron. He ought to be ashamed of himself...unless, of course, I am really wrong, lol.
