Hi Ladies,
I am thinking seriously about attending Cosmetology School in NYC:yawn:, any suggestions for a good school and any advice would truly be appreciated.:yep:
LOL, Rufus12

Hi, I received my cosmetology license in 2003. ( In Texas) but make sure you pick a school that teaches more than passing state board and are into teaching new popular styles and such.

A beauty license is cool to have, because you get MASSIVE discounts on high end products. Like for example Mizani shampoo may cost like $15.00 in a regular store whereas Armstrong McCall (You need a license to buy anything in their store) you get it for half the price. You also get discounts on stuff at hair shows, get to try the latest new make-up and hair products at shows, it is soooooo fun. But you have to be dedicated to it in order to receive your license. Here in Texas we have to take a 12 hr sanitation class, when renewing our license. I don't know how it is in New York, but I;m sure ya'll have more fun stuff going on up there than down here.

idk about good schools in nyc but just look for a place that doesnt just teach hair, make sure they teach hair, skin, makeup, AND nails. also make sure your not paying 20,000 when you can get the same teaching for half the price. really do your research, i asked beauticians what school they went to and how they would rate it. it led me o a well rounded school for only 8,000

I'm enrolled at Empire on 34th st. I highly suggest you do more research than I did. Lol. I also suggest you go on as many tours as possible. My tour was during their nail week so I didn't get a proper viewing.

Look into Aveda. A friend of mine goes there and loves it. Also try arrojo. I hear it's cool. Do a basic search on cosmetology schools in NYC and read their reviews and go in to look at them all! I was anxious to start and Empire usually starts classes every 6 weeks so I jumped in. Don't be like me. Look into them all. Good luck!

Hi Ladies',
@L.BROWN1114, thank you so much for researching the financial aspect of Cosmetology for me, I went to one school here for a tour called Brittany Beauty School and there tuition and fees total around $12,600, they are accredited and all but, I thought the fee was kind of high. Also, during the tour there were students taking an exam by working on their mannequins, OMG, what is the first rule in combing your hair....to start from the bottom and work your way up to the top...these ladies were tugging at the hair from the top to the middle and at the bottom throwing the knotted hair to the floor. Not thrilled at all with this school.
@NAYNA, how do you feel about Empire I was considering taking a tour of the school, and thank you Arroyo has great reviews , I will definetly take a tour of them....I heard that Aveda is super expensive. Anyway thanks to all who responded.
Anyone else who would like to add some input?????????? LOL, Rufus12

coco (nayna) is SO SO SO right!

BUT--------

you want a school that will also prepare you for to complete and pass successfully your state board exams

**has instructors that have a "specialty"

**has instructors that have ------RECENT------ hair knowledge and stay abreast of hair trends. Now this could be an instructor who still has a pretty heavy client base and she has a salon in her home, or someone who recently sold their salon, etc.

**has instructors that look like they want to be there

I hated the school I went to, but like Nayna I wanted to get in so I went to a nearby place. I am of the opinion that the pricer schools teach you, but they won't give you a well rounded foundation (Arrojo, PM) But Hair Design, Empire(?) will. The previous school also do not have a high 1st graduation rate for the State Board (what's the point of shelling out thousands if you can't get your license! It is a stressful/time consuming test process - you don't want to repeat it)

Don't try and make friends - if you are NY, have had a bit of an intelligent life and made the choice to go into this profession,,,,,you will find yourself an outsider in cosmo school.

good luck dear and shoot me a PM if you have any other questions.

By all means take a tour. But be prepared for them to sugarcoat the school. There are a lot of.... rough people. Lol. And Hijabi is right about the intelligent life thing. Some people choose this profession because they feel they couldn't make it in college so they came here. It's sad really. I don't talk much about my plans and what I plan on doing after I'm done. I hardly mention that I have a degree cus most people ask why I'm there. So yea. See the school and try and get your own feel of it. But be prepared and ask a lot of questions.

Me too~yes it is hard, going to CS was an Edu'macation for sure! woo chile.' Say a prayer and keep it moving.

@ HijabiFlyGirl and Nayna,

Thank you so much for your responses and advice. Yes, I am part of the "schooled" group I have my Bachelor of Arts degree, so I will keep hat on the "HUSHHUSH". I am still touring schools and trying to find the right place. You both are right it is a lot of money being invested so I really need the best school for me.:yep:

Yep, you received some VERY good advice on here. do a buuunch of research and if possible, talk to some people whom have graduated from the particular school you're interested in. Another thing I wanted to add is: the school I went to tried to make us by their supply kit ( mannequins, rollers, combs, brushes, etc.) for $600. Most of the stuff in the kit I found at the dollar store or at Wal-Mart. If you can find the same supplies for a cheaper price I suggest you buy it. I bought all of the supplies on my own and all together paid 150-200.

DON"T BOTHER BUYING THE KIT. You can go to the BSS and get everything you need. If you are NYC you can go to Royal BSS for professional and they will give you the discount.

If you are serious about this, you will end up buying both the kit PLUS spend that and more on your own equipment - PLEASE Mark ALL your stuff. I have a symbol razored into everything I own as stuff walks.

If you go to a place like Hair Design Institute, you can get the Milady books on e.b. sometimes or place an ad in cra.lis. or up in the BSS.

I went to cosmetology school and love d it but realized my passion was in the classroom. I say pursue your dreams but be ready to be on ur feet for hours and the practical I enjoyed but as with any schooloing be prepared to do alot of reading. Keep me posted ! B Blessed!

How much do kits cost? Mine was included in the tuition so of you get financial aid you don't pay out of pocket for it. I begrudgingly give Empire that if the other schools are charging for kits. Our blowdryers and Marcel irons are Babyliss, 5 mannequins, nail kit, books rollers rods etc.... It's a huge kit. I've only replaced one of my round brushes so far and I bought a color brush but the kit comes with like 2 or 3. I started in February and I'm done in September (full time).

But yes get a permanent marker and write your name on everything! My mannequins are even marked up in their scalp, lol.

Does any of your high schools in NYC offer cosmetology...here in Texas I took the courses while in the 11th and 12th grade. I just recieved my instructor license this year and was thinking of moving there

No not anymore Trefoxx. If you are an instructor in TX, more than likely you will be able to transfer. Lic. in NYS is 1000 hour program. To be an inst. its 2 yrs working exp. plus your lic.

bumping because I'm interested in finding more information about attending cosmetology schools in NY I also have degrees but I think I always had a passion for hair and wanna give it a shot... or atleast research it... what schools would you ladies recommend? Empire does look kind of pricey

One of my friends just graduated from Paul Mitchell here in Texas. I don't know about the Paul Mitchell school up there, but I hear that school is the ish and looks real good on your stylist history.
I wished they would've had it around while I was in school.

Also how long did you ladies take to complete your coursework? I'm currently working full time so I would not be available during the day. I'm curious to know if that would mean I will take longer to complete the courses.

There are a few actually, one in every borough except Manhattan

Brooklyn: W.H Maxwell Career and Technical HS
Queens: Queens Vocational And Technical HS
Bronx: Grace Dodge Career and Technical Education HS
Staten Island: Ralph McKee Career and Technical Education HS

Those are the ones I remember when I was applying to high schools back in 2007. I ended up going to a regular high school so I'm researching cosmetology schools as well.

Well I go to L.I.B.S in Long Island, but I'd suggest checking out all of them; Empire, Aveda... I think they pretty much all give an open house where they give you info on the school and tell you cost and stuff

I just wanted to chime in and say that some high schools have adult education vocational training programs. I found one here in DC that offers the full cosmetology program in the evening. If your a DC resident you don't have to pay tuition. You do however have to provide your own supplies. I'm sure other states may have a similiar programs.

My instructor has been in the biz for over 20 years and runs her own salon. She keeps us abreast of all the trends and took us to IBS in NYC back in March. So please don't over look researching high schools for adult continuing education.

Also check into community colleges.

I went to cos school and I would say that my school didn't teach much about black hair (only relaxers) and we learned NOTHING about natural hair / locs. I learned about black hair techniques and natural hair care on my own by reading and working in salons. I did learn a whole lot about hair color and cutting. Just do your research about the school and I'm sure that you'll find the right fit for you.
