Do protein treatments do this to your hair?

I notice that my hair stops absorbing conditioners, no matter how much I chelate or clarify, seems like conditioners simply sit on my head but then when I use something like Nexxus Emergencee or Dudleys DRC 28, the conditioners are soaked up like they are suppose to and my hair feels fab! Does this happen to anyone else? Is this a sign that perhaps my hair loves protein and I need to use a more protein based daily conditioner?

After a protein condish my hair always feels softer when I use a moisture DC. I think protein helps the hair except and hold moisture better.hth

What types of moisturizing conditioners are you using?

My moisturizing conditioners (AOHSR & Kenra MC) soak into my strands. So does my Joico KPak reconstructor (which is a protein treatment).

After many product trial and errors, I found that these conditioners work best because they penetrate, and because of that reason alone they are now staples.

I've tried everything under the sun. Kenra Moisturizers, Essentuous Conditioners, Dominican conditioners etc.

That sounds like you need more protein to me. I notice that my hair hates protein until I'm about 8 weeks post. If I try to use a protein condish, it instantly makes my hair hard. When I'm 8 weeks post, it makes my hair nice and soft.

Protein conditioners allow my hair to accept moisture. Without them I was a dry bunny. I now do a weekly protein DC's or reconstructors, followed by moisture cond'r (bi-weekly) for uber moisture. My hair REQUIRES it :yep:

This happens to me also. I just started noticing it in the last 3 months and my hair has turned completely around now that I've started regular protein.

I've been alternating weekely between Emergencee and GPB in addition to Aphogee 2 step every 6 weeks.

This sets me up nicely to soak up and retain moisture.

Nice to hear that others out there have hair that apparently loves protein. One time, I used DRC 28 and Emergencee in a 3 week span of each other and my hair was like yeeeeeees baby. I make this point because apparently some people's hair cannot tolerate protein. After reading all the literature, posts etc about protein overload, I stayed clear of protein and concentrated on moisturizing conditioners, little did I know the very thing I was apparently avoiding is what I needed!

I also alternate between Gpb and Emergencee, good products. I also purposely stayed away from protein forever, and i definitely hendered progress

OP have you tried using heat with the conditioners. That may help with opening up the cuticle layer of your hair to let the moisture in.

I'm not quite clear if your hair is hard/dry feeling from the protein and needs the moisture, or if this is just an observation that you noticed and your hair is doing okay.

I've tried heat but to no prevail. Just an observation I have made about my hair but things are doing okay. Just wanted to know if I were the lone ranger out there or if there were anymore out there that experienced the same thing.

DRC 28 every month and emergencee once a week, and finally all the care i give my hair is paying off. Just started this regimen last month and so far so good. My hair has never been better.

:yep::yep::yep:

Protein helps to rebuild the cortex in order to accept and retain moisture. I think of it like fixing a leaky pipe; you fill in the holes, more water will stay within the pipe instead of seeping onto the floor.

Awesome! :yep: and by the way, Brighteyes35 Aubrey GPB is a stand alone deep conditioner, I even co wash with it and use it often and you do not need to follow it up with a moisture conditioner. It's great for the weeks you do not use Emergencee or for quick conditioning

I love, love, LOVE the Aphogee Green Tea and Keratin Restructerizer. I spray it on after every DC and my hair has never been happy, healthier, stronger and softer! It has water, keratin and silk (as Momma Dee would say, "In that order!") so maybe the silk softens the effects of the keratin. I don't know but I do know this product will stay in my reggie, henceforth and forever more!

Let LCHF say, "True!"

My natural hair is dry when I don't use protein. It doesn't matter how often I DC and moisturize or baggy. If I haven't had a bit of protein lately, my hair won't hold the moisture. Does that have anything to do with porosity?

Good question. Let me chime in with my own experience. I had a hair analysis done some time ago and my hair came back with normal porosity. But that was just my hair. Would love to hear from other ladies.

I have normal porosity, and my hair also Needs protein regularly. I do a hard protein weekly, and I can't go more than 2 weeks without it. I stopped using MT to do the sulfur thing, and after a few months my hair felt like dry trash and I had shedding & split ends. I started using MT again, and Bam....hair was back to feeling moist, and strong.

I'm thinking I need protein too, but I really have NO idea what conditioners are protein? (I'm the exact opposite of a product junkie...what would that be called?) TIA ladies!

My hair is super high porosity and my cuticle needs repairing! I will be doing protein weekly for the rest of my life--my hair holds no moisture and I realize that I haven't been using protein that much. And goodness knows I needed it after being bleached and dyed...

Looking back, I don't know what I was thinking...I literally will be starting a protein regimen tomorrow, so I'm ready for the moisture retention! :yep:

Question: Is CJ Repair Me a pretty strong protein? This is what I will be using....or should I go out and purchase Emergencee or 2 step since my cuticle needs rebuilding (from hair analysis)?

I also noticed today that when I used the CJ Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner as a leave in, my hair was quite happy. It contains keratin amino acids. And this wasn't even on freshly washed hair...I can't imagine what it would do on clean hair..

Arian no, not the Aphogee 2-step, it's not that serious. You can only use that once every 6 weeks. Plus it is very harsh. You need something you can use regularly that is gentle, yet strong with your hair. Nexxus Emergencee or Komaza Protein Strengthener are great for using every other week. You can use a reconstructor on the alternating weeks, Aubrey Organics GPB is great for protein (& moisture balance).

virtuenow, I was using AO GPB and she told me that since my cuticle was so weak, I needed something with hydrolyzed protein instead. So would CJ Repair Me not be enough? Should I just get the Emergencee to start and use Repair Me next wash?

Arian, yes, I was told the same thing. Which is why I re-incorporated the Emergencee & got the Komaza Protein. I never heard of CJ Repair if it has those ingredients, then you know what to do.

Curl Junkie Repair Me has hydrolyzed keratin protein as the third ingredient...

I will start with that and probably use the emergencee at the end of the month for something a little bit stronger. I also have the Affirm 5 N 1 Reconstructor.
