I have never really thought I was any type that I've seen or heard described, but I just kind of defaulted to 4B, since I KNOW I'm not 3 anything or 4a. I don't have curls! No really, I don't! When I tell people I have waves, they say "Oh that's just an elongated curl" Um no...there's no curling happening at all. Every now and then I'll have stray sprig of 4a, but nowhere near even a section.

The top line is what my hair looks like dry then, it's a deeper, larger pattern the same wet. That's it, no spirals...so...what is that?

ETA: That was rhetorical, btw...I don't think based on the descriptions of the different hair types that there is one that this fits...just wondering if others have similar difficulties.

Do you have any pics?

You can see in my albums on my profile, but I wouldn't say either of those is the ideal state to view my hair. The pics are a braidout (13 mos) and wet hair (16 mos). My dry hair tends to look even less identifiable because it doesn't really have a texture, just kind of--frizz?

I think after you cut your relaxed ends off, whatever amount of shrinkage you get may make your hair type easier to identify. :yep:

I don't know what my hair type is either...I know it's 4 something too...I think I have 4a, b AND c...I have 3 different textures...

Hmm..maybe the relaxed ends are weighing it down? Interesting, I hadn't really thought of that, since my natural hair seems so much thicker and heavier than the relaxed hair. Maybe I'll BC a patch (underneath) Just for fun! :yep:

I believe this to be true. When I cut of my relaxed ends, I started with one strand of hair. I watched it slowly go from a curl to a coil. The same thing happened all over my head. You'll be surprised at how different your natural hair looks after you cut the relaxed ends off.

I know it's hard to say with relaxed ends but I'm not seeing 4b. Your new growth is really wavy. That's what my new growth looked like though I was never bone straight so I didn't notice much of a line of demarcation.

I'd be interested in seeing your mini bc. Do it in the back where no one will notice.

you won't know for sure until you get rid of those ends. before my bc I didn't think i had curls just waves or whatever. I knew it wasn't likely that I was a type 2.

I WISH my hair looked like yours lol. Welll...since you guys are putting me up to it...I will oblige with a mini bc....just gotta find the right spot.

I'm actually surprised more people don't feel this way, though. I think the hair typing really doesn't account for a lot of textures that aren't coily. Well..we'll see. I almost don't trust myself with scissors...I've been tempted to totally BC several times this summer!

Cherokee-n-Black,
I just looked at your pics and your hair is gorgeous. Hair-typing is a waste of time don't worry about it cause you'll most likely fall into 2 categories like most of us.

To me my hair type is UHT, because it is just so confusing!! The whole hair typing thing. Some days I'm tempted to make a post and ask. Others days, I'm like if I do what difference will it make? I wont change my reggie or anything. I see like a dozen heads who look similar to mine. Then I look at the pictures and diagrams they use to show the different types and it make's me even more confused. :spinning::drunk:

wow, this thread went in a completely different direction than i expected from the heading. NP tho, just an observation.

i'm gonna contribute something per the original heading anyhoo because my mother's hair perplexes me to NO end and i'm burning to share. hope that's OK with you OP.

so, mi mum's hair; i've decided to call it a silky... something. the back 40-50% is prolly 4a but the front is just straight. like, no curling. not even really waving. and it's blingy as fcuk! really silky shiny and straight (only holds twists with product. the ends don't curl tho).

i know you need pics but seriously WHAT IS THAT? she doesn't have relaxed ends. this is virgin hair from chemo recovery... her hair's always been like this tho.

so? ... talk :p

THAT'S what I'm talkin' 'bout. I see a lot of hair--even on here, that doesn't really seem to be fitting into categories. I've seen women with this type of hair, I think. There's a hair type that I see quite often, and typically, for some reason on brown skinned women, that is reeeally baby fine, silky, and may be straight or may curl just a little bit. It's natural hair, not relaxed, and seems to be tough to retain. I don't know what that hair type is, either, but it sounds similar to what your mom has in front. ITA, I didn't think this thread would focus so much on my hair. LOL I just thought there were others who didn't fit neatly into any category. Not because they had multiple categories, but because the categories don't really fit.
