My hair started breaking off at the tips. I've reduced my cowashes to 1x per week (and I try not to manipulate my hair as much while washing), and I've incorporated protein conditioners/moisturizers into my routine. I think cowashing is fine for most people, but you still have to clarify on occasion and watch your moisture/protein balance.
I have been conditioner washing for the last 3 months using Wen cleansing conditioners. I always and I mean always use a a conditioner to wash my scalp and then I apply a mixture of two thirds mositurizing conditioner and 1/3 protein conditioner (Keraphix) to my entire hair. I not only have little to no breakage even after not combing my hair for 3 days, but my hair stays moisturized. Every fourth week I will skip one of the conditioner washes and wash with shampoo (Nexus Therappe, followed by a reconstructor (Emergencee) and then a moisturizing deep conditioning treatment. My hair is thriving so far.
I agree with the other ladies about what you're doing after co-washing
Buena Suerte!
I don't remember if it made my hair thinner then though. Maybe my relaxed hair just needs to be washed with shampoo, my newgrowth is pretty much under control anyway. Maybe I'll revisit this if I decide to do the natural thing again.
