Any healthy heads in dry climates? What is a girl to do? I cannot for the life of me figure out what to do with my head besides slap a wig on it. How can I keep my hair pretty and moisturized with this dry air and hard water?:drowning:

If you have hard water try a chelating shampoo and/or a water filter. You can find them at just about any home store. Also - I found that using glycerine and aloe vera gelly in a moisture spray reeeeally made a difference. I started oil rinsing with castor oil and adding honey to my DC. The oil rinsing worked so well to clean my scalp that I don't need shampoo anymore, and it keeps my hair moisturized for days afterward. HTH :drunk:

Bumping ....

Ladies in dry climates , what has worked best for you in keeping your hair moisturized ?

Actually avoiding glycerine helped me a lot!
Because the air is so dry it will kind of work the other way around..

I now use a conditioner (without glycerine of course) and seal with an oil. That really turned my hair around!

I agree with this completely! I noticed that using glycerin pulled the moisture from my hair since there is no moisture in the air. Just last week, I cut glycerin from my regimen and my hair is SO MUCH softer!! I also cut aloe vera and that has made a difference as well. Here are some things that are working well for me:

  • CASTOR OIL: I love this stuff!! I use it on wet hair and in my DC's.
  • Shescentit Coco Creme Leave-In: By far the best leave-in I've ever used. I put this in my hair after the castor oil and my hair dries very soft.
  • Avoiding glycerin, aloe vera, mineral oil, petrolatum, and sulfates
  • Qhemet Biologics Alma and Olive Heavy cream: Just a little goes a long way. This is an excellent moisturizer.
  • Oyin Shine and Define: Provides a soft hold for twist outs.
  • Of course moisturizing & sealing at night and sleeping in a satin scarf.
  • Oh, and SHOWER FILTER!! I just got one of these. I got it from Lowe's for like $25. It lasts 6 months and the refill is only $10. I noticed this made a difference with my first wash! It is great for your skin as well.
HTH :)

Bumping for more suggestions...I live on the west coast and I had to stop using glycerin it drys my hair out.

co washes, daily moisturizing, sealing hair and regular deep condish.

aloe vera and castor or coconut oil works also

oil rinses are great and so is bagging at night.

also, sometimes when i cowash my hair, i dont fully rinse out the conditioner. when i get out of the shower, i lightly blot dry my hair with my towel, leaving 50% saturated. then I scrunch in some oil (castor, coconut or other) to seal the ends and either bun or wear it out and it stays moist all day.

daily moisturising and sealing

So funny... I just started using glycerine this week . My hair is soft but I was wondering if it would dry out over time . I think I am going to have stop using it .

Yeah, I think my next purchase will be a shower filter, I think the water out here is hard too.
