Dusting challenge, anyone?

Think Slim
I don't think that we have one, but I propose we start a dusting challenge.

I got my dusting yesterday and was just thinking about how much length I retain per year, as a result of avoiding getting a "trim". I didn't expect to reach shoulder until December, but I'm already there. I'm now hoping that I can reach armpit by December.

Anyone up for a dusting challenge?

What would it entail? Just not getting a trim? Or would it be periodic dustings?

Rather than getting a much needed "trim" every 8-10 weeks, I go to a white salon and request a dry dusting. The girl knows my routine now, so I don't even have to instruct her.

I prefer to go when my hair is freshly blown (at the roots only) and wrapped, as this ensures that my hair is not curling up. I do NOT let them wash my hair. She takes off ONLY WHAT IS NECESSARY, nothing more.

I get this done every 8 - 10 weeks and when I get a touch up (at the Dominican salon) the stylist does not need to trim; she always says, "I'll let you know when you need a trim."

I just have to find someone who knows what the heck I mean. My stylist is very good at doing a dusting, heck she always tells me I do not need a trim when I say I do, but she is bad at being on time :nono: which is why I go maybe 2x a year, and then I have to go at the crack of dawn to get in and out. Woe is me :ohwell: , did I saw I was in? Well I am so in

Try a chain-salon, like Holiday Hair (I use them) or Cost cutters. The first time you go, be very direct, cause ya know they aren't all used to our hair, but they LOVE to do it ;)

Please tell me the exact words to use when I want a "dusting." My stylist STILL does not understand what I mean so maybe I am using the wrong words. THANKS!

Thanks for the reco Webby, I was always tempted by those Great Clips cheap hair cut commercials ever since I saw one of us in the commercial

I actually learned the term from the white girl who does it for me now.

I said, "I would like a dry trim, only removing the what is necessary. I do not want my hair washed, only want to remove the dead ends." I used my fingers to show her how much I wanted taken off. She followed my directions.

The african girl that works there, has dusted my ends a few times (I had to break her in...cause she didn't understand the concept). She's not bad, but she talks too much, when she should be paying attention to my hair.

I forgot something really important. Do NOT let them try to dust all of your hair at once. In other words, don't let them comb all of your hair back and start chipping. I insist that they section my hair, as if I were getting it blown out. This is method takes a little longer for them to do, but it means that your entire head of hair has been "cleaned", removing all old ends, but the least amount.

This is particularly necessary if you have thick hair.

Not trying to steal your thunder or anything Webby, but I tried the dusting thing before and my ends were looking terrible. And this is with protective styling. It seemed no matter how much dusting i had done, my ends still looked frizzy and dry. Maybe it was something I was doing wrong (used shea butter on them ends, not too much manipulation) I don't know, but I had to go back to trims, albeit small ones.

But if it works for you and the other ladies, more power to ya! :)

WHat is dusting and how do I explain it to my stylist??? If I know all of that then I might join!
Go back to where I responded to Vick...I explained it there :)

Did you put your hair in a bun when it was wet? I can't do buns, and my hair seems to do poorly when I wash-n-go. The best my hair ever does is when I do a rollerset, which smoothes my ends out.

I'm really sorry that dustings didn't work for you. I know how frustrating that can me.

I was wearing either a french twist or a pinned-roller set... i forget which one.. for some reason my ends just didn't get really all that smooth following the rollerset. Who knows? I just think I have really stubborn :whip: hair.

Oh well. Dust on, girlfriend!

Your hair may not have been completely dry. I used to have the same problem. I feel so bad for you.... sorry for your bad experience.
