Does anyone have an opinion on these, particularly the "no base" ones (not the ones in the box). I am also interested in how a lye relaxer can be "no base," must be quite gentle.

I used it for about 2yrs when I was texlaxing. Never had any issues with chemical burns or damage to my hair. I switched to Revlon lye when I decided to start relaxing 2x a year since Revlon relaxes me bone-straight.

Well, I went ahead and tried it. My thoughts: It is labeled as a no-base relaxer, so I didn't base. I won't do that again! I don't feel it gave me enough time to work compared to Silk Elements, but then again I always base with Silk Elements. That could be what made the difference. Nevertheless, I think I will stick with Silk Elements, because I have about the same amount of underprocessing with the Elasta as I do with SE, but I had to get the Elasta off quicker because I started to burn. If I ever did use the Elasta again, I would base my scalp for sure no matter what the label says!

Supergirl If you don't mind me asking why do you use lye over no lye? I tried to use lye and it burned my scalp and left me very underprocessed. What benefits do you see to using lye?

Lye is less drying to the hair. That's the main thing for me. I've also found that my ends stay nicer longer. I remember when I was growing out the no lye relaxer and transitioning to lye, the no lye hair was definitely dryer and more see through. I do seem to underprocess more often when I self-relax with a lye, but go figure my hair stylists in the past have always been able to get my hair straighter with the lye relaxer than I do. I'm sure part of my issue is user error since I'm not a pro, but I enjoy being a DIYer.

Your hair looks great, nice and full, so keep up with what is working for you!

Well now that almost a week has passed and I've had a wash day since my relaxer, I'm having second thoughts. Maybe I WILL use it again. My hair feels salon-fresh and I was mistaken. I do have some underprocessing, but not as much as I do with Silk Elements.

At the moment, I think I'll try the Elasta again with the next touch up. I'll base and I might go with the mild so I'll have more time to work. I used regular this time.
