I think my gel is breaking the sides of my hair off. Can someone please tell me something else to use that's going to keep my edges smooth when wearing a bun. thanks

What gel are you using? I like Smooth n Shine Gellation (the pink one) and Fantasia Frizz Buster Gel.

Tracy posted a neat trick in another thread: Mix an alcohol free gel with hair grease. More grease than gel. I haven't tried it yet, but I plan too.

There's a Healthier Edges challenge going on. I know they would have tons of tips to help you with smoothing your edges for a bun.
I've heard of mixing shea butter w/ alcohol free gel as well. I don't use gel right now. Elasta's styling foam takes the place of gel for me.

I now use my own mix of Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel with Shea Butter. 4 Teaspoons of the gel and 3 teaspoons of the shea butter. This smooths my hair and keeps it moisturized and shiny...NEVER hard.

Okay, I'm gonna go on my "silicone is bad" bandwagon and suggest that if the gel is loaded with 'cones, it will eventually dry out your hair, especially if using regularly and for extended periods.

I am 4b relaxed and I never use gels, just water seems to be enough for my buns. I don't need to have the "bone straight" look, so a bit of distilled water rubbed in palms and smooth over edges with HANDS (no brushes!) is all I do. I carry a small spray bottle of distilled water in my purse and whenever edges get fuzzy, just smooth with more water -- never hard, never oily, never build up, always moisturized!

HOWEVER, on the rare occasions when I go for the bone straight sleek look, I use aloe vera gel (lilly of the desert or fruit of the earth) with a few drops of rosemary essential oil . Hairloves formula sounds good too . . .

I echo the QP elasta gel, but what I also love is CD's hair milk, it does the job for me, or Motions pomade.

Neroli mentioned cones and I think she may have a point.

I also think it's possible that if the gel has proteins that could contribute to the dryness, too. My beloved Fantasia Frizz Buster gel has cones AND proteins. Too much use was just not good. I like the FOTE Aloe Vera Gel b/c it doesn't contain all that extra stuff.

There is a gel by Smooth and Shine called conditioning gel. It comes in a black tub and the gel itself is pink. I always feel like it's not really a gel. It doesn't make your hair hard at all and it really conditions it. And it smells good.

I use the Tancho High-GradeTique hair stick. I started using it when I read about it in Essence. (One of the women from "Girlfriends" as well as a couple of other stars recommended it.) I haven't seen it in stores, though. You can get it at this site: http://www.ballbeauty.com/tancho_stick.htm

Here's what the site says: Tancho Tique sticks from Indonesia are made from natural ingredients. This old-fashioned styling product easily styles even the most unruly hair. Tancho pomade used to be a norm among men of our parents' generation but has since been replaced with the less greasy hair gel. Lavender scented.
