Yesterday my brother told me that I need a hair cut. I asked him if my hair is looking thin or damaged. He said no, it's just too long. He showed me a spot on my back where he thinks I should cut it up to.
Earlier in the week my ex told me the same thing but I didn't pay any attention to him. But to hear the same thing come from another man's mouth made me sit up and pay attention.
I've had friends tell me before that they thought my hair was too long for my height.
Ladies do you think there's ever such a thing as too long hair on a black woman?

No way!
Do YOU think that your hair is too long for you to handlee, style well etc?
They don't know how hard it is to get healthly long hair, forget them

Ehhh, it's all a matter of "personal" preferences...yours is the only one that counts when it comes to your own hair.

I think so too. Hair length preference is the same as hair color, texture, style preference...it's all subjective. So if your hair isn't too long for you, it's not too long :)

I don't think this is a black woman issue. I do think there comes a point in hair length on some women (every woman is different) where it ceases to be beautiful hair and just becomes long hair. My co-worker (who happens to be Chinese) has classic length hair. It's healthy and thick. Clearly it's taken her a lifetime to grow. But to me, it's just long hair. I never compliment her on it (although I compliment HER generally) because it's not beautiful to me. It's just long hair. If you're really into long hair, of any length, then super long hair is pretty to you. If you are more an adimirer of healthy looking, full, or cutely styled hair, then sometime plain old straight long hair can leave you a little flat, excuse the pun.

Of course, this has nothing to do with SweetCashew specifically. I'm talking only in general terms.

That's the length I love my hair the most. When you wear it curly and it jumps up it looks so good.

I do agree that hair can be too long. It is your preference on how you choose to style your hair. I agree with Cheleigh. I feel the same way about Mariah Carey's hair. It is long and just there. I think she could use a nice cut for a new look. Now I feel the opposite for Naomi Campbell. I like long hair on her. However SweetCashew, if you like your hair long then wear it long.

I like your hair!!!!!, don't cut (unless you want to, but then send the rest over to me, lol)

Well i was watching one of the old ANTM seasons and Tyra said that your hair should not be any longer than a 3rd of your height, and on me i think thats true, anything longer than 20inches on me would start to look awful, however thats just my personal opinion

edited to add: I don't think race has anything to do with it, hair thats to long is just hair thats to long

Sweetcashew, your opinion is the only one that counts when it comes to the length of your hair. If you're happy with the length of your hair, then it shouldn't matter what others say or think. If you want even more length, keep it growing, girl.

ITA! I think as long as you are pleased with your hair- then it shouldn't matter what anyone else has to say. And you know we all are in love with your hair! :yep: You shouldn't let anyone else's opinion of what is "too long" affect you. Thats why they have the power to cut theirs when theirs is too long- no one can control yours!

But in general, (for me) I do think some lengths can be "too long", particularly if you are short and it overwhelms your face AND body. I don't think it is a race issue either. Hair swamping an entire person isn't cute on any race (in my opinion  ). When your hair starts dusting up the floor behind you, getting in your food, or is generally getting in the way of people seeing you-- then a cut may suffice. I think hip/tailbone length is the lengthiest I could consider beautiful on anyone. Once you start creeping past that point . . .:look:

This is the hip/tailbone I'm thinking of. Longer than this...

Sweetcashew,

I just cut off 4 inches for this very reason. My hair was too long. There was a point where it was beautiful and then as it grew longer the compliments stopped. That didnt bother me but what bothered me about my hair is that the longer it got the more drab it looked. It wouldnt hold a curl and it had no lift or style to it. I hated it. Yes for some women, long hair rocks! but for me it wasnt a compliment to my look at all. Now that I have 4 inches less,my hair has a nice straight blunt cut which makes my hair thicker and fuller and it holds curls very nicely....oh and lets not forget the awesome bounce I have. Its still considered long but to some it may be considered medium long. Its a few inches above my bra-strap but well below my shoulders so the length is still there.

SC,

I definitely see your point because sometimes I think of cutting mine and also I know that I am not going to allow it to get past a certain length because I know it won't be attractive, but rather "just long hair" as someone said.

Now, with all that said--I think your current hair length looks nice. If you wanted to take a few inches off, your hair would STILL look nice. You do what YOU like. I am getting to a point where my hair is becoming more difficult to manage at this length, so I'll either learn how to manage it or take off several inches.

I understand your plight, but let your decision be based on your opinion, not your brother and bf.

I think the issue is men, one day they want our hair long the next day it is too long. My husband knows that my hair length is on me and how I feel. When we got married I was growing it long, but I got a bad relaxer and it was cut into a very short inverted bob. One year later I was pregnant, and decided to go with braids and corn rolls, kept my hair like that, since we were in Hawaii, the total time 3 1/2 years. My hair was bra length, I was at home then so I used to go to the beauty school every week and got some form of updo, and rarly wore it down. My hubby was deployed and I was severly sick, so my family was taken care of me and our daughter. One year later before he was to come home, my hair was at my butt, I had to cut it, my husband said I should have waited until he saw it but he was ok with that. I just cut it to between shoulder blad and bra length. I like that length, no longer than bra length and my husband loves it also, but he knows if it drives me crazy or the meds that keep me well change my hair again, it will get cut off. I have alot of men who know me say let my hair get longer, but I tell them until I make Oprah money and someone else is doing my hair and if I like it, kiss my bu......:lachen:

Too long? Are you kidding me? Your hair is absolutely GORGEOUS! As long as it's healthy, and you like it the way it is, I think you should care less what other people say!

Whatever you're doing to it, keep it up!

My opinion is just that hair doesn't have to be long to be beautiful.

Actually I don't really want my hair to be long I would like it be down to by shoulders or a little past that I would be just fine. What I really want is for my hair to be thick and healthy the most and curly. ;)

I think too many times people equate long hair w/ beautiful hair, but you see those makeover show's where someone cuts their hair and they look so much better.

But all in all it's a matter of personal opinion.

I cut off about 5 inches of hair in January because I thought it was too long. The most recent pic of my hair in my album is the one with me and my sister. That's after the cut. It's grown so much since then.
I'm going to update soon ( my broken digital camera still hasn't been replaced)
Anyway, I've been styling my hair everyday. I do braid outs, roller set curls, bangs (yeh I cut bangs) so I don't think my hair is looking boring at all.
I know I'm guilty of walking behind women sometimes and commenting on how much of a cut is needed because the woman's hair is too long.
My thing is if I cut off 5 inches only two months ago, why should I cut more off? I just think it's too much cutting for no reason.
I do plan to cut it to about armpit length for the summer. I know I'm going to love that!!!

Don't cut your hair! It is perfect, I am so surprised usually men like long hair what is their problem? Don't cut it, it's beautiful!!!!

I don't think it should have anything to do with men (who gives a flip what THEY think? THEY don't have to look at you in the mirror every day!). I DO think hair can be too long, and at that point, IMO, it's no longer visually pleasing...it's just hanging there, being blah.

This is why I chose to stop at BSL. For my height, anything past that is not gonna be cute, and it's going to chop my torso in half, making me appear shorter. There's a girl in one of my classes that has THICK hair just past her waist, but it's sooooooo ugly on her!!! She has a gorgeous, dainty face and her frame is super tiny, so her hair just overpowers her whole countenance. When she walks around, it looks like her HAIR is wearing her instead vice versa! :nono:

So I agree with the other ladies as far as it being personal preference, but it is possible for hair to be so long that it becomes unflattering.

I think your length is perfect, but it is all a matter of personal preference. I know that the longest I want my hair to be is mid-back/waist length, anything past that would seems like extra work and of course that depends on if it evens gets to mid back :) .

Hair represents power. It always has. For a black woman to have very long hair it does make a statement about her power. Hair is also sexual, like the book we've talked about, Hair Is Sexual.

When someone (especially another black person) says to cut your hair because it's too long, it would make me wonder why they feel so uncomfortable. Are they threatened by your power or perhaps your sexuality?
ETA:
As I mentioned in another thread, I just LOVE your hair, its so beautiful!!

I love long hair and don't think that it can be too long, regardless of race. The length of your hair, and whatever you do to it, should be determined by you and no one else!

I agree with Isis,

Siblings both male and female can be jealous of the things that make you unique. Probably because you get more attention.

That ex of yours is just jealous because you still look good in spite of his ***. :lachen:

Black men can very intimidated by women with long hair. It does represents power. Some men may be attracted to you but fear rejection because they feel they are not on your level or that you may be "high maintenence". They like to feel in control. Don't pay attention to weak, dumb, men. They don't mean you any good anyway.

And as for Tyra Banks, how many wigs have we seen stapped to her "five-head"? That is just like some women to tell another woman how long her hair should be when she can't grow hers. :lachen:

The look for a model look is not what we should aspire to. We are what real women every day women look like women and we are a lot more beautiful those models.

My hair is easier to take take of now that it is long because I don't have to curl it everyday.

Don't cut that beautiful hair or eles I'm going outside to "cut me a switch". Supergirl, that goes for you too!

I was kinda thinking the same thing but could not articulate it as well as you have here.

Sweetcashew, if I were you I would not cut my hair, it's just lovely the way it is. And I'm going to back up Yellowflowers and cut me a switch too!

I think your hair length, color and style compliment your good looks very well. I just viewed your album and my thoughts were that you are a very pretty lady with long and definitely not boring hair. You could be a hair model!

Of course its your decision, but I vote DON'T CUT unless you think its not attractive or manageable. :)

I have a friend who happens to look best with shorter hair. She's very petite. Long hair overwhelms her. On the other hand, I look better with longer hair. I'm tall and have a long skinny neck.

Same with my sister and I. I think if the hair looks good on you and you like it..good. HOWEVER...I would take my husband's opinion into consideration. He's the main person I want to look my best for.

Oh wow...a hair model. geesh thanks. Maybe I won't cut it just yet. And maybe i won't cut that much off for the summer. But I am a little bored with the length.
