Has Anyone Ever Tried Hairloc Extensions?

For some reason - I've been having a major itch to try extensions ...I think I'm just bored with protective styles but I'm worried about damaging my hair by wearing it down. I've been doing some research and came across this method. I like that no glues, heat, or braiding is used. It's def pricier than a sew -in ( from what I've seen online ) but the results are much more natural looking. Any reviews??

I love this new way of wearing extensions. I haven't tried it yet but plan to. I plan to do highlight from now on with this method instead of putting dye in my hair. I bought the plyers(35.99) and links(19.99) at Sallys. The extension hair is very expensive but I have learned with the help of youtube how to make my extensions and how to apply my own. I believe this is very similar to the Hairloc method.

I've seen the hair angel website - if I could find that lady and make her do my hair I would! The little hook they use to feed the hair through the bead looks like a latch hook - I used to do those little rug kits when I was younger.

I guess my biggest concern is the only extensions I've ever heard of black women using is the sew-in. What happens when I need to touch up? How can I flat iron my new growth? What kind of hair should I use to match my texlax texture? Or would I just get straight hair and airdry in buns or something? Is this considered "protective" in any way? How would it affect my length retention?

Yes, that lady can definately do some hair. And yes it is nothing but a latch hook. I bought the latch hook at Sallys too for 1.99.

Many of these places that do this technique will require you to come in for a consultation. They will be the one supplying the hair and equipment for your style to be applied. Taking that burden of getting the wrong hair off your shoulders. They will also give you guidelines on up keep and maintenance. Possibly reschedule you for a future appointment (touchup). Now if you do it yourself it would be quit hard. I don't consider it a protective style because none of your hair is conciled (put away) Only difference is hair is being added to hair strand near the root to help obtain a highlighted effect, length or thickness.

You have got gorgeous long thick hair you would only benefit maybe with trying color. Unless you wanted to add some more length and or thickness.

Hair Angels FAQ's state:

They will do a strand test to give you the right hair look and texture.

Clients experience hair growth and fortification because the extensions force them to stop over processing. And as always, I test strand at your consultation.

If trying it for the first time and getting a full head application I would go in and let a professional do it. Which would be expensive erplexed but well done .

But if you are interested in doing small application like highlights around a certain section of your head, the I would reccommend doing it yourself.

Thank You so much for your help Moni! I don't think I would do a full head - probably btw 1/4 and 1/2 to keep it looking relatively natural. I don't need to add thickness, I just want extra length around the more fragile areas which are in my nape. There is a salon in the area that I think I will call for a consultation. I think meeting the stylist will be a big part of my making up my mind.

Definately!!! :scratchch I didn't think of that. If you added a curly or wavy texture to your hair it would be a big advantage and keep you from possibly having to style it as much!!! Oh yeah!! I would love that!!

I thought about that too.

I believe if you don't correctly un-bend the metal device that is attached to your hair and the extension it could cause damage and breakage.

I wore this system for over two years, looked great...

Its supposed to last for up to 90 days per install but at $400.00 per install (plus the hair) I tried to stretch it by a few weeks each time and (I'm guessing) not having them changed out promptly caused me a LOT of hair breakage, the places the locs were installed are at least six inches shorter than the rest of my hair. I'm not sure I'd do it again but YMMV.

Several of the salons that I've seen offering this in my area offer packages or upkeep warranties at about $65 a pop to tighten and touch up as needed. I figure if I can wear it for 6 - 9 wks, then protective style for another 4 wks before a texlax touch up.


I know a sew in would be more practical, but I hate the way most of them look, they're so easy to detect, and everytime a stiff wind blows you gotta grab your scalp. I also like that this method is alot easier to where in updos or with different parts.

Thanks for sharing Cocobunny. That stinks !! I hope your hair is growing back nicely in those areas. Since I am gonna do this myself. I am gonna try and be very careful. I have made many mistakes with highlighting (not getting color I want) and with this techinque if I don't like the color I can simply remove the metal link and extension. And hopefully without damage I pray. To me it still seems safer than a chemical highlight application.

I know what you mean about stiff wind!!! I currently have in a sew in partial weave and sometimes that stiff wind will get my bangs!! LOL !!! I hate when that happens. But I must say sew in weaves and instant weaves are my favorite protective styles.

A few women I know received this type of extensions. All at the expense of their own hair, (white and black, the thinning and breakage did not discriminate). It is very difficult to remove them safely. Additionally, they are not always easy to hide and can be easily detected. You may find a site like BHM more useful for obtaining additional information.

do you all think that the safest method is a sew-in? I don't want my full head done, but I tried this once with 3 tracks, and maybe it was the stylist, but she broke off ALOT of my hair in the weakest area! Parts of it are still shorter than the rest of my head and I'd gotten the tracks to protect that area in the first place! I've seen some people say that vertical cornrows are better for the hair, but how do you do that if you're not doing a full head application?

There is always a risk when it involves attaching anything to your own hair.
I have only used 3 types of techniques myself which has been ( Weaving, Braiding, Clip on Extensions). To me the next one I am willing to try and will is the Ring X techinque (info below and is the same as hairloc).

Extension methods I will never try is Bonding & Fusion (which is the techinique that Britney was using) Melting a substance or glue to your own hair.

Hair Extensions
How Do You Wear Them?

There are many different methods in which you can wear hair extensions. These are the general terms the industry uses to represent the process. There are many variations of these methods based on the individual who is performing the job ranging from braid weave, tree braids, individuals, latch hooks, pole method and much more. Please consult with your stylist before choosing a method.


1) Weaving A process in which you create tracks on the individuals head and sew the hair extensions on. This method is the most widely used method in adding hair extensions.

2) Braiding A process in which you add hair extensions by braiding them in. There are many types of braiding techniques which varies from one skilled beautician to another. Tree Braid, Braid Weave or Individuals, Cornrow, and French Braid are just to name a few.
3) Ring – X One of the new process in which the metal ring is already on the hair ready to attach using the His & Her Ring - Xer. It is very easy to apply and can be re-used.
4) I – Tip A process in which an “I” shaped glue is already on the tip of the hair ready to be attach by using the His & Her Extension Iron or with a Ring. With the Ring, there's no heat applied to the hair
5) U – Tip A process in which the U shaped glue is already on the tip of the hair ready to attach by using the His & Her Extension Iron.
6) Hot glue gun method A process in which the extension hair is attached directly to your own hair by heated glue stick. In this method, an acrylic glue stick is placed inside a glue gun which heats and melt the glue. Then, the hair extension and the glue are attached directly onto the individual's hair.
7) Bonding The simplest method. A bonding glue is brushed or applied onto the weft of the extension hair and then it is applied at the root of the individual's hair. It can easily be removed by a remover the glue comes with. This is a temporary method. 8) Clip ons A process in which the extension hair is pre-cut and has clips attached on the weft to clip on and off to your own hair. It is very simple and easy to wear. You can put it on or take it off as you please.

I've seen reneice's website before, I just wish I had a better way to know for sure if a stylist in my area was as skilled and genuine as she is before I let them in my head. I always thought I was safe so long as I avoided chemical services, and tight braiding, but my last experience kind of traumatized me.

Maybe I'll take some of the $$ I was thinking of using for this service and invest it into buying really good weft hair for a partial sew-in if I decide to go w the extensions. It seems more practical and at least I know what I'm dealing with.

Wow!! I don't think I'll be experimenting with this technique. Man when I experience customer service like that I feel like :hardslap:slapping someone. I am glad you are recovering from the breakage. Thanks for giving me the ugly truth. I needed to hear specifally the metal clips did the damage to decide not to do it. (b/c I was hyped on trying this out) I guess I will be doing highlights this year another way or the old chemical way. Thanks for saving me some hair drama.

I am latingirly's sister and boy yeah it was horrible. I didn't get them though, the hair looked like silk next to my sister's relax hair. When she tie her hair up in a pony tail, all the coil that attached the hair to her hair was showing. In a few days, some strand were comming off. She also had an awful breakage in the front....it was really bad!!!

I WANTED A REFUND SO BAD , BUT I JUST LEFT IT AT THAT , NEVER AGAIN WILL I BE DOING THOSE STUPID EXTENSIONS.

Thanks for sharing your experience with this method. I was so very interested in this and obtaining the supplies to do it as well. But after seeing this post, I believe I'll pass.
