I've talked with some ladies who had..but what about you all. What is your opinion on her book and products? WHo had her Dew and her Conditioner? Did you like it? why? wny not?

LIke to get as many opinions and results.
..and what do you think of her hair?

I've read some excerpts from her book and checked out web stuff on her. I personally don't like her method. I mean if I had been growing some hair for 14 years I would want to have more to show for it.

I go by the Wanakee method and crowning glory b/c they both advocate trimming the hair and they both have longer, thicker healthier hair than Cathy does and in much shorter time. That's just my opinion though.
BTW I got my catalogue form the beautyx2 people and will be ordering my steamer thanks again.

I've been on since Novemeber 2002, my hair has done a complete turn around .

The Book - It was my first experience with a haircare book, so, for me it was very informative it did'nt focus on a lot of things, but it did focus on what she actually researched and what helped her.

The Conditioner - I love it, it made my relaxed hair texture so different that what it was before. Again, I did'nt have a lot to go by cause I was a every two week salon patron and NEVER did my own hair so I had'nt had much experience with conditioers, esp, deep conditiners, I never asked the stylist what she was puttin in my hair. (How stupid I was then). Now that I have tried others, (ORS Mayo and Aphogee) nothing compares.

3) The dew, I'm not exactly sure if I'm overjoyed with it, I use it cause it's a part of the program and it's working, it's light and gives bounce but it seems to dry quickly, I don't know if that's bad or good.

Overall, Ms. Howse saved me and literally gave me a new start with haircare, I'm am gettin so many compliments and people are saying "Your hair is really growing" and it is I learned through her that it always has been, I jsut was'nt keeping it. When people ask me, I tell them about her and give them the brochure, people even ask me to order it for them. I really need to get a commission.

I show them my before and after pics and most know me and KNOW there's a difference.

But seriously, I know it sounds, cliche, but God put her in my path as an answer to prayer, and I thank him for that.

As for her hair, I've only seen pictures, but it looks healthy and fluffy not weighed down with oil and slick looking. My hair looks like that since I've been using the system, of course not that long. YET......

...have you ever had braids on your hair and did the sysyem? SInce you have the book what advice is in there for someone who is natural and have braids?

No, I have'nt never really worn braids, My sister braided my hair once (french braids) which lasted a week cause I was gettin a headache. LOL

And then one other time with french braids in front and updo in the back. I guess I'm not a braid person.

She did mention something about braid wearers I'll have to reread and check. It basically talked about mainting your hair under the braids. I think it's more geared toward women who wear relaxers and there own hair, not weaves/extensions. I do have a girl that's natural that's starting to use the products, I'll have to see how she likes it. Sorry to be posting in here, I did'nt see your post til after I did all that typing.. LOL

I'm in total agreement with you Mindymouse!

I discovered Cathy Howse during a time I kept praying and asking God why is it that my hair could no longer grow past my shoulders like it did when I was in high school, and in my first few years of college.

As common sense as it would seem that our hair needs to stay moisturized at all times, it never dawned on me that the lack of moisture in my hair is why I could never retain length!

I had no idea that chemically processing the hair depletes it of protein. No idea that our hair needs protein. That explains why I no longer saw the thick hair that I had once!

Before Cathy Howse, I never read labels. I didn't know that Silk amino acid, aloe and keratin were all protein.

Cathy's book is the first one (I believe) that reminded us how those in the 80s who had stay-free-curls in their hair, always had long hair. She used that as an example to show how much we can retain length by moisturizing our hair daily.

Yes, I've read other good books like Carolyn Gray's (very good book to use as a guide by the way) and others, but they wouldn't mean much to me if I didn't get the education that I got from Cathy's book first. After reading her books, everything fell into place.

Keylargo suggested that I come to this forum and I am so happy that I took her advice. It's because of Cathy's book that I can automatically understand what many have posted here without asking a zillion questions.

Aside from Cathy's book, Carolyn's book, and this forum, I don't think there is any other book I would have to read. I'm all set with this great forum!

I'm kinda taking bits of advice from ms Ms Howse, Wanakee and various internet boards and books on natural hair!

I reread Cathy's book cos as with a lot of hair advice, I never really followed the advice for long, nor established a routine. I stopped brushing my hair and only comb it when wet to get the conditioner through. I also wash the hair more often, every 4-7 days and no longer blow dry my hair or use heat. I make sure I moisturise my hair too.

I think the biggest help for me was not brushing or combing anymore (I use my fingers and wear twists/canerows/braids most of the time). A few weeks ago I lost so much hair when I washed it, last two times only a few hairs came out

In summary, though her focus is on relaxed hair, I think the principles - moisture, no heat, handling with care - can be applied to natural hair too. HTH!

Did you get a hold of your friend yet. WHat are her results? and did you read that part about the braids? What did it say?

Overall, I think Cathy gives a good first "primer" for how to cure the most detrimental problems that we as black women encounter as we try to attain length.

The book itself is good. It's simple and straightforward without a lot of science thrown in to bore or confuse you.

But I tried her conditioner and it was not right for my hair. The peppermint and the aloe protein were too much for my fine 3c hair and it tangled my hair very badly which led to relatively severe breakage. After three uses I had to discontinue use. I still use it occasionally - but I use it as a CONCENTRATED protein conditioner - I treat it as if it's Aphoghee, or Nexxus, or Dudleys DRC and do not manipulate my hair at ALL while it's in. When the time is up I rinse for a good 10 minutes and then slather on moisturizing conditioner for twice the amount of time I had the UBH conditioner on. So if UBH got 20 minutes, my moisturizing, detangling conditioner gets 40 mins.

It's a VERY strong portein conditioner on my hair and thus, I use it carefully. I only use it when I run out of my favorite protein conditioners (like Nexxus Emergencee) because the peppermint also dries my hair and if I can get the strength without the added drying from the peppermint I like to do that instead.

Overall her theories have some validity and are basically sound. But her program is basically just a regime that worked on her hair that she shared with the world. Commendable, but maybe not for everyone. I still do a modified version of her regime. But I don't use her products and I don't subscribe very much to the whole "stimulate the scalp everytime you condition" thing. I use a conditioner that is specifically designed to either strengthen, moisturize or lubricate as needed as evidenced by the look and feel of my hair at any given time. I have no problem targetting each problem separately. I feel my hair responds better to this and I enjoy taking care of my hair so I don't mind the extra work.

Hi, yes I did talk to her, she's not thrilled with washing her hair ever 3 days, so she said she has been slack, she said the conditiner made her hair hard, but she did'nt follow with a moisturizer either she said she'd give it another go being consistent in follwoing the regimine, I'll keep you posted.

I did'nt read about the braids over the Easter wknd, I had family over and was busy, but I'll do it tonite and post it tomorrow.

MindyMouse
I do have a question...with Cathy Howse routine when she says wash your hair every 3 days does that also mean to do a deep co after each of those washes too? and also..is her CO a after shampoo leave in couple mins rinse out or is it a deep moisturizing protein use heat leave in for 30 mins co? ALso using heat with the deep CO I have a hair steamer do you know if one can use a stemaer instead of a hooded dryer with her routine.

Thanks

~Napptural~

BTW Do you know of a good creme moisturizer she reccommands? and shampoo?
Also Mindy what shampoo do you use and how do you do your deep CO?
Thnaks..
Sorry for all the questions...

I pmed you. I forgot to add that she said, a lot of braid wearers spray the dew on their braids..

Nyrai, that's what I think I like most about it, it's common sense.

All of them are "Regimines" ie, Carolyn Gray, etc. But this to me was just so simple. All those products that he "Industry" pushes, really are necessary.

I just started using this method after I got the book two weeks ago. I read the book in two nights and immediately started doing what was required by the regimen. I am not using her products I am using a combination of KeraCare and Mizani. So far my husband says I have about 1 inch of new growth. Thus far she has made a believer out of me. I hope this helps.

Princess, that's good hear. I had some serious concerns and I emailed her a LOOONG email and she responded, it's so good the support I've received from her, I have emailed her several times and she's always helpful.

She said she is currently reading shamboosies book and will do a review of it.

I can't wait to see how it compares with my review.

Mindymouse,

Do you hotcurl your hair after airdrying your hair like Cathy mentions in her book? I too enjoyed her book and have followed most of her advice, I was just curious to know if you were doing the hot curling after air drying and if so, do you do it every 3 days?

Thanks in advance for your help.

No. Girl I tried that once after I first read the book and I don't see how she does it. I mean her hair is waaay longer than mine and I did'nt have the time or patience to do that.

I even tried once to use the curling on on the new growth to straighten.
naughty.gif
Not on my head.

Really I don't see how she does it.

hmmm i may give her book a try. i like to read hair books and advice and the two i want to get are hers and carolyn gray. i would love to try different routines to see which my hair prefers. God bless you all.

I've never tried her system, but I did read the book. It was very informative & it gave me the desire to "properly" care for my hair

.

I read her book, and even used some of her advice. I keep the book around to read some pointers every once in awhile. It's a good book and very elementary....
