Hi my fellow hair lovers! I haven't posted in a while, but I have been lurking, hope all is well around here
smile.gif
.
Anyway, my question is do any of you ladies that are natural or transitioning only "finger comb" your hair? The reason I ask is because I am transitioning right now, my last relaxer was 12/22/02, and I have about 4-5 inches of new growth and my hair is hard to comb now

. When I just wash with conditioner in the shower, I sometimes finger comb my hair which of course is easier on my hair. But when I pull a comb through it, while soaked in the conditioner, it's STILL hard to comb. I was wondering if I just stick with the finger combing and MAYBE using the comb every once in a while will this be o.k? Or will I be asking for trouble if I never comb it

? Please help me out ladies, I need all the suggestions I can get. Thanks

Hi Babychoc,
The only time I ever really comb is when I am in the shower and I use the flow of the water to help me...and I use my fingers more than my actual comb. I can never, ever comb my hair any other time because it is fine and loves to tangle. Also, I dont comb through my whole head. I use fingers for most of it and comb at the ends only.
What type of comb do you use?
Try a wide tooth if you arent already and see if you like it.

Hi LavenderDutchess (nice screen name!)

question, what's the "no trim method" about?

I basically do the same thing. My hair is heavily coated with (TONS) of conditioner first. I put the conditioner in first, cover with a plastic cap(Elucence Moisture Balancing is great for this), wash up, then take my fingers followed by my wide tooth shower comb(I got from Sally's) and my comb through is easy. You have to be more careful with 2 textures.

Have you tried washing your hair in sections? That will usually work. Try putting your hair in about 6-8 sections, combing one section at a time. After all sections are combed rinse each section one at a time.

I use either the Mebco Tortoise Shower Detangler

or my vent brush

Ditto.

It's funny to say, but combing hair is not that neccessary. My hair looses it's curl pattern and becomes frizzy and large when I comb it with a widetooth. It looks better when I use my fingers to pry apart the knots. And I really agree with the statement about the water. I make sure the water is running over the part of my head that I'm working on.

Once in a while I will comb my whole head, but usually it's because I'm doing twists and don't really need my hair to be defined. Also, if you still have relaxed hair on your head, that might be contributing to the tangles.

WOW! I had a great hair day girls!

Thanks girls for all the replies
smile.gif
! Today in the shower, I actually just finger combed with a lot of conditioner and didn't use my wide tooth comb. I just carefully brushed the edges a bit.
Believe it or not, my curls actually looked better when I was all set and done with my hair
laugh.gif
. I did not get NEARLY as much frizz as I would normally do with my comb outs. I just finger combed and left it ALONE!
Anyway, thanks again everyone for all the great suggestions

See, what'd I tell ya? Combing your hair isn't always a good thing.

The less manipulation natural hair has, the better it does.

o/t but,

Please tell me your secret on your growth
drunk.gif
5-6 inches of newgrowth within 4-5 months?

Hi Ebony, maybe I should explain myself better....

First let me say I don't have a secret, sorry. I wish! I never straigtened my hair 100% bone straight, so maybe I just should have phrased it by saying that I have 4-5 inches of hair that is curly and not straight like my relaxed hair on the bottom. Last time I did a relaxer, I didn't leave the relaxer on that long at all, maybe about 7 minutes at most, and so I have a lot of unproccessed hair that is REALLY kinky, curly, but I LOVE IT
grin.gif
! I am by no means saying that I get this much growth in this amount of time
smile.gif
. Sorry for the misunderstanding and sorry if I confused you more, thanks

[/ QUOTE ]

Aww, thank you Laela, Im glad you like it.

Well, The No Trim Method is pretty much how it sounds...you just let your hair go with out a trim...but I only started it after my hair was in top form and I use henna conditioner(Nature's Gate) and I conditioner wash(Suave Lavender Naturals) EVERY single day( well, ok...every so often my hair doesnt need it, but I do make sure to water rinse it when I dont...keeps up the moisture balance)
I got this No Trim Method, after going on a few other hair boards and finding out about a book called The Hairgrower's Handbook. The NTM stated that everytime we trim our hair, we cause our ends to oxidize, which ultimately creates tons of splits, breakage and massive dryness.
I dont know about you, but everytime I get my ends trimmed, a few days later they would feel horribly dry and I would see alot of splits. I am trying this method, until I reach my first hair goal...or I get really frustrated with it(for now I am really liking it!)I started this about a month ago, and my ends are doing nicely....although my hair is a bit more prone to tangling than before!

Hmm.. I'll have to chek out that book. I'd think, though, the hair must be in tip-top condition (no split endz at all) to start this method. Split endz, as I understand, are caused by friction from clothes and other materials, excessive use of heating equipment, such as blow dryers and curling irons. If the endz are split, they just keep splitting (like an unraveling thread) until they're cut. Sounds like strictly protective styles are the way to go w/ the NTM...

I guess I am on a no trim method and didn't even know it. LOL! I chopped off (about 2" in most places) all my splits on Dec 30th and don't plan to trim again until end of July...so 7 months. So far so good, my ends are doing well cause of the protection and the scurl. If it keeps going this well I'll trim 1x a year instead of 2x/year.

LavendarDutchess,
Which site had this no trim method? TIA

wow.. really? well, I'll have to follow in your footsteps there, Faith..

your hair's testament enough!

I haven't trimmed since last fall..mostly cause I can't find someone I trust. I may just do the once a year trim cause I don't have a choice. I'd like to see the website also...

I guess I am basically NO Trim, unless there is a specific reason for it. Since I wear protective styling 98% of the time, I do not see the need to cut off healthy hair or hair that needs moisture or oiling to recover. But once, it is obviously unrecoverable, I trim it. I do not trim to shape it either. That will come as I reach my future goals, like below bra strap -waist-etc. My hair is never down long enough for anyone to notice whether it is blunt, u shaped or whatever. Ends that are definitely crunchy scraggly wispy ugly and difficult to comb through...bye bye wispies!

So far, my hair is same thickness from root to tips.

Bonjour.

Me too, it's been a good 7 months, since I had a good trim. I clip them when I see them but I'm finding that out of a section of hair I might see 3 - 5 that are split. Why cut 1/4 to 1/2 inch off all your hair for a couple of splits....

Also, I belive that travel up the shaft is a myth. I watched mine and it usually breaks to one side or the other, no travelin. The hair strand is not built like a rope to unravel but rather scales split.
