How do you braid/twist your curly hair?

Do you ladies comb out the curls then braid/twist or leave it as it is to braid or twist? I was wondering if this makes it easier to do. I hope this is not a dumb question.

I always comb through the hair before braiding or twisting it. I would think it makes for smoother, neater braids and twists.

Thanks everyone! I'm gonna try this ASAP! I think I finally have enough hair to do it. I'm going to try it on dry hair first, then damp hair.

I do the same, using a large-toothed comb.
