Okay so this going to be a two questions.
Im am transitioning and I see a bit of breakage at the ends. How can I fix it? Should I use more protein leave ins? or do a protein treatment once a week? I tend to focus more on moisture with small amounts of protein and I am very gentle with my hair but it seems to always break.
My reggie is cowash 1x a week shampoo and dc once a week moisturize daily and p.s. daily. I dont use too much protein between sew ins...Is breakage inevitable at this stage?.

Also how much protein are you using?..be it weekly, monthly or daily.(especially transitioners and relaxed heads:grin:)

I use protein every week. I'm transitioning someone and I use protein in her hair once a week as well. On top of transitioning her hair is color treated and it's doing well.

I use a light protein and I protein every other day, for my natural and relaxed ends. I use Redken Extreme Anti-Snap Leave-in.

I'm relaxed and I use a Reconstructor (Light/Medium) Protein Treatment weekly. I also use MT. When using MT, I make sure I keep my moisture levels up through my daily moisturizing treatments and weekly DC'ers.

Prior to incorporating a weekly reconstructor, I would Co-Wash with Protein and DC w/Moisture and then use a combo through-out the week of protein/moisture daily treatments(depending on what my hair needed) because I was trying to Perfect My Balance:yep:

However, now, a weekly reconstructor is always part of my Regimen.

I posted this in another thread about breakage and transitioning. Breakage can be a apart of transitioning but it is very important to keep it down to a minimium. Here is what I do to keep my breakage down a minimium.

1. moisturize - I do DC with moisture every wash. I was protein heavy at the being of my transition bc of breakage but I found other alternatives that worked better FOR ME. This is usually a dc on dry wash (remember hair is most vulnerable when wet and is best not manipulated very much when wet. after applying this is sections I braid my hair and leave it this way (this also helps with breakage)

2. protein - I do this every wash to every other wash. I was no poo for a while now I'm low poo since I wash less frequently (every week to every other week). I ususally use Aveda DR or AO GPB both are very light protein treatments.

every so often I will do a real protein treatment with Aphogee (once every 6 months or so)

3. The key I've realized is ceramides and oil. I have an oil mix of camellia (the base) coconut oil (an excellent conditioning oil) and wheatgerm contains ceramide. This fortified the hair shaft.

I hope this helps. PM for questions

I am transitioning and I use protein (light or medium) 1x per week. I concentrate it on my line of demarcation , so this area of my hair stays very strong. Breakage has become nonexistent for me. My leave ins are moisture-based. I do like to use the Ayurvedic powders(as a tea) to help my hair too. I deep condition after every wash--which is 2 or 3 times a week.

I've been transitioning for 27 months now and use a light protein DC once every 3 or 4 weeks.

My protein DC I use is Mill Creek jojoba conditioner or ORS Replenishing Conditioner (original formula).

I wash once a week and DC with each wash. Normally I DC with NTM Mask or what I have left of my Pantene Relaxed and Natural stash.

The week that I do the light protein DC, I *don't* follow up with a moisturizing DC. I haven't had any issues with this regimen.

I stay away from any products with soy protein in the ingredients list no matter where it falls. It makes my hair dry, tangled, and brittle.

Natural head-was using a lite protein treatment in my hair every week b/c of heat usage but now since I stopped using heat I only do it twice a month.

I dont think I should follow up with a moisture dc.. I used Aphogee two minute and I used a moisture d.c. after and It seems to make my hair worse than when I started..

I've been transitioning for a little over a year and just recently began to pay attention to my protein balance because I was having some breakage of my relaxed hair. I've been using light protein (Cantu Leave-in) sealed w/ Hot 6 Oil every other day, paying close attention to the demarcation line and relaxed hair. I have noticed a complete turn around since I started doing this. I try to avoid applying the leave in to my natural hair as often just because I don't feel like it needs it as much since it hasn't been broken down by relaxers.

do you still do protein treatments?

Natural here. I use Aphogee 2-min weekly and follow it with a DC. I've never used a hardcore treatment, but light treatments have been working very well for me.

i'm natural and color-treated.
i try to use the Aphogee two-min at least once a week-it's a light protein, and works great.
i use eggs at least once a month.
my hair adores protein and it does much better when i use it regularly.

I'm transitioning and I use a protein treatment every Sunday. I apply it to dry hair, sit under the steamer, wash it out and just let a cheap conditioner sit on for a few minutes while I shower, wash that out, and then apply a leave-in and go. I don't do a moisture DC afterward because my hair loves protein and the moisture DC seemed to make it worse.
Also, if you're having breakage, why don't you try a trim? When I did a protein treatment and a mini-chop, my breakage became basically nonexistent.

I did do a 2 inch chop on my nape and sides...My hair was breaking less but I was finally passing apl . I actually did it to get rid of layers:wallbash: .Rocky do you follow up the Aphogee wit a moisture d.c.? I do use eggs between installs:grin:

With lite protein treatments sometimes there is no need to follow up w/ a moisture dc (deep conditioner) it all depends on how the hair feels. Usually when I dc w/ a protein conditioner that has hydrolyized keratin(sp) my hair feels soft but strong but when I use a protein conditioner w/ hydrolyized collengen (sp) my hair is hard that I have to use a moisturizing dc afterwards.

I'm transitioning and I use protein reconstructor every 2 weeks (Keraphix), but I also use Giovanni leave in which has protein and my moisturising DCs (Nexxus Humectress and Joico Moisture Recovery balm) also contain some keratin.

I'm transitioning and I DC with ORS Mayo (Protein) about every two weeks. I also spray Aphogee Keratin & Green Tea Restructorizer once a week over a Moisturizing DC and let it sit overnight. I had stopped using Aphogee Keratin and Green Tea for 2 weeks and started seeing breakage again. So... back into my reggie it goes. I also cowash with Skala Ceramides G3 Condish. Ceramides help combat the loss of protein although it is not a protein itself. I also moisturize with Carefree Curls Gold which has protein in it as well.

I'm natural and sensitive to hard core protein treatments. I use AO GBP once a week or once every two weeks because I keep my hair full of moisturizing deep conditioners all the time and sometimes I risk overconditioning. When I don't have GBP at home and shops are closed I use moisturizing conditioner + 1 egg yolk (not the white as it's too much for me) + olive oil. I do protein treatments for 20 minutes without heat, on wet hair.

I use Organics Mayo Condish once a week and follow up with Design Essentials Stimulations. Because I baggy every night, I don't want to take a chance and have my hair get "mushy", so I use the protein condish to prevent that.

sorry i just saw this.
it really depends on how my hair feels and what i'm about to do.
if i'm about to use heat, then yes. but if i'm about to do an air-dried style, no.:yep:

I'm transitioning (6 mos post) and I use medium protein every 2-4 weeks. Right now my fave is Joico K-pak.

OP, start out with a medium strength protein now and see how your hair acts for the next 2-3 weeks. (Don't forget to moisture DC after) You'll know by then if you need to do another one, but don't just schedule it arbitrarily.
