How to straighten my hair (w/o going to salon).

I last got a perm about a month ago so I'm not due to get another one for another month. The new growth is starting to peek out. What are some tips for keeping/getting my new growth straight (short of going to the salon for a wrap or something) in the meantime? Last weekend I tried to flat iron my hair, but that was a huge disappointment. (I need more practice in using flat irons.) Any other strategies? What do you you permed ladies do?

I would like to know as well. Preferably without heat cause my hair is never really straight. Thanks for starting this.
