Hair Coach
I sat there and just shook my head. :nono:

So I had a class today. You know. As a stylist we always have to learn new techniques. I learned a lot. A lot I didn't agree with.

I asked the speaker how often does he thinks hair should be trimmed. :nono::nono:

"Hair needs to be trimmed every six weeks for it to grow"

The mentality of black stylists sometimes is mind boggling. If every stylist has that philosophy black women will never grow their hair past shoulder length! :wallbash::wallbash:

What a shame.

So automatically trim every 6 weeks regardless of the hair's condition?

Ugh - at that trim rate all the clients' hair would basically stay the same length from one year to the next :perplexed

I guess it'd be fine if the ladies just want to maintain a certain style but definitely not for those wanting to grow their hair out.

Sad.

Sounds like a few hairdressers I've seen who think that hair should be relaxed every 5 weeks without fail, and trimmed at every touch up!
With this kind of thinking being perpetuated by stylists, its no wonder many AA women have warped views of what it takes to grow healthy, long hair...

thats not a blk stylist thing--thats a hair school curriculum thing..

i wouldnt group that with just blk stylist...

It's funny because I was in a stage in life were I wanted to maintain a short cute style. So after going to the same stylit and not being able to retain length.. I thought I had it all figured out.

I told her that I wanted to maintain the style and to keep it trimmed at the same length for a while. I was going every two weeks... guess what??? My hair was growing like weed. She would not trim/cut to keep it at the same length... but would trim small amouts BECAUSE a cut cost more and she knew I wanted to keep the same style?!!!!

Anyway, she was the last regular stylist I maintained because I always get the opposite of what I want. If I want my hair to grow they cut. If I want it short they let it grow!!!!

I just havent found anyone I trust. But, I'll be honest, I need a stylist in my life because my hair has no style.

I've been thinking about going in a salon and start with a good style and tell them that I want to maintain that specific style and see how long my hair grows....*shrugs

Cus you know they can't follow instructions.. no offense OP. I know you're good.

it's crazy but they tell their clients this to keep them coming back so the salon/stylist makes more money, some places charge 100's just for a trim so if you get into some of your clients heads and get them to come every 4-6 weeks that's some good money + the regular services. I have been to salons where they aren't scissor happy though, they do exist somewhere over the rainbow lmao!

smh.. The part that blows me is.. when the hair is perfectly fine.. the stylist still want to take off 3-4 inches..smh

Thinking like this is why I don't go to salon anymore, can't keep any hair on my head. Now I carefully watch dd when she go. DSD you are one of the rare stylist that is not Edward scissorhands!

I flipped out one time the stylist charge me $30 lol!
the only other person besides my mom (and when i'm not being stupid & sampling other stylists) that I trusted was at a dominican salon you tell her a little she did just that a little and she only charged $10 regardless of length.

It never changes with them and if you say you don't want a trim they get offended and say you are holding on to "dead ends."

This makes me realize I had some good stylists in the past as two of them were always hesitant to trim my hair even when I asked them to as they both cited, "Your ends are healthy, you don't need a trim". I don't think it's a black or white thing because one of the two was black and the other was white. I think it's a cosmetology school/instructor thing.

I wanna go to a stylist and get my hair washed and flat ironed...that's it!!! But i'm hesitant to go bc i know they're gonna wanna pull out them stupid scissors and want to "trim" my hair and i ain't havin it!! I might go postal if they keep hasslin me!!:lachen:

Been there... I guess maybe we all have. I went in wanting 1 cut and of course. Came out with a whole nother...looked just like another girls that was sitting right there in my face at the shop. It was WAAAAY shorter than i asked for.

The shop owner is VERY SCISSOR HAPPY! When she started off w/ hood hairdo's (remember The "FREEZE" ladies..i got them from her for $10). But she turned BIGTIME w/ accountant and all that & yeah, forgot where she came from.

That day oh so long ago I paid $65 for relaxer plus $ for cut. I had a picture of what i wanted and all. This was around 96'-97'.. ha ..lol.. i walked out of that shop and never looked back.

I have only been brave enough to go to one of the chain type (super cuts like) place for trims/cuts pre-lhcf. Now i 've gone back to doing it myself.

Man, they are too much with all the boosht lies.... (tip of the hat to Mook!) I refuse to go to any stylist for any reason any more... the last time I went to the dominican's they whipped out the scissors and cut a lock of my hair OFF. When I looked at her like  she said it was dead anyway.

I refuse to risk having my situation jacked up again. And it's VERY hard to argue with someone who just "knows" they are right. So I just won't go.

We learned to cut hair in school but I think the excessive trimming is something that is passed down from stylist to stylist.
Trims and the frequency of them were never really discussed.

I so agree with you. I live in LA and my sister lives in Oakland (she's a hair stylist) and I get my hair trimmed every blue moon! And she agrees with the method that you don't have to get your hair trimmed every six weeks for it to grow...wow...and thats a big SHAM WOW...sad:nono:

I don't go to stylist anymore because I am learning how to take care of my own hair. However, even other stylist like to cut off alot. One of my coworkers is Asian and had waist length hair, she went to a stylist and the stylist told her that she was just holding on to dead ends and cut her hair to a little above bsl. At first my coworker was mad then she liked the shorter hair since it is easier to do. But I have noticed that she is growing it out again.
