I heard L-cysteine (an amino acid) is supposed to help hair grow dramatically. Has anyone tried it? about how long does it take for results to take affect? weeks? months? I currently tale 1500mg (3 tablets from GNC) your response is appreciated
I've been using it since August 1st, though I stopped now because I only have three tablets left and I'm waiting for my order from Puritan's Pride to come so I can start using it again. The first one I got was from GNC but DON'T get it from there. Get it from Puritan's Pride because it's cheaper and you get more (buy one get two free).
Anyway, I've been taking 4 tablets a day (500mgx4=2000mg=2g) and have already gained 1/4 of an inch in under two weeks.
Also, take Vitamin C (take twice as much as you are taking L-cysteine). I took only 3000mg (3g) though. And don't forget to consult your doctor first.
I am taking 1 pill 500 mg per day, and was planning only to take it for one month, then break then start back in another month. But if you actually achieved that much new grow then I will up my dosage for sure !!!!!
Ladies, I had the ruler all up in my hair! Yes, 1/4 of an inch and the month isn't even over. My last relaxer was July 17th and I can always tell the new growth apart from the rest of the hair even if there is only a little because it's thicker and coarser.
Make sure you get the "O.K." from your doctor first and also take vitamin c. You may not want to take it at night right before you go to bed because I found it a little hard to get to sleep. I took them a few minutes after I ate.
ALSO, L-cysteine needs other amino acids to function so I took a scoop of protein powder everyday (you can see my post in the other link posted by DSD) which also came from Puritan's Pride. It's the 90% protein powder one. I listed some of the ingridients in the other post.
I can't wait to try some! Has anyone tried Viviscal super hair growing vitamins from Finland I believe? Is it worth it? I heard it's supposed to grow your hair like 1 inch per month.
Last year I took l-cysteine for 3 or 4 months and my hair took off. Unfortunately, the stuff smells awful. I have some left, but I stopped taking them because I take PP's Amino 1500 which also has l-cysteine in it.

Legs71,
How much new growth did you get in that 3-4 months?

It was hard to tell because my hair is natural and I wear braids back to back, but I tell you when I took my braids out it was visibly noticeable my hair had grown a great deal.
I too have also started taking L-cysteine in the beginning of August. I just measured my hair and I got a little bit more than 1/3 inch of growth since beginning of Aug, I'm not sure if this is faster or not I guess I can't tell until I take this for a long time (at least a couple of monthes). I'm currently taking 1500mg-2000mg. I hope my hair will grow an inch per month though, so I hope this thing starts to kick in soon. good luck to all.
Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention that for the last 2 or 3 monthes, my hair has been growing about .7 of an inch per month, probably because of the warm summer weather, so that's why I didn't think 1/3 of an inch in 2 weeks is any difference to me. Well, anyways I will continues taking this for a while.

So you only notice faster hair growth while you were taking L-cysteine at the time? are you going to start taking it again soon? thanks

Probably in September I'll start taking l-cysteine and my other vitamins also. The only reason I stopped taking all of my vitamins because after awhile they didn't seem as potent. On another note I've had 4 colonics for the last 4 weeks straight because supposively a not so clean colon causes vitamins not to absorb in your system effectively.

Viviscal did absolutely NOTHING for my hair. Some women have had very positive results with it, but unfortunately I wasn't one of them.
Viviscal did nothing for my hair either and I took it for a year. You have to take it for six whole months before you see any results and all it did was drain my wallet. You can find other supplements that are more potent that this and for less money.
I added Cysteine to my daily intake about 3 weeks ago. I have not logged my progress yet. I thought I would just wait another month and measure when I get my next relaxer. Depending on what brand you take, Cysteine does have an unusual odor. I take (and would recommend) TwinLab L-Cysteine. Each capsule is 500 mg. I take 2 or 3 per day, along with 3 X as much vitamin C. They are fairly easy to swallow because they are capsules and they don't have an odor. I ordered them from iherb.com. Just a suggestion!
How much do you think we really need of L-cysteine to see significant growth? I'm currently take 1500 mg but i want to take it up to 2500mg. think it's safe? Anyone taking over 2000mg?
I took viviscal and it is actually one of the only supplements that improved my hair growth I recieved an inch a month. But what I noticed is after the second month I would ony get 1/2 inch the effects wore off just like with all supplements. At first my results were immediate. You only need to take 500 mg of cysteine 2 times a day for growth results at least 8 to 10 hours apart. I took the cysteine about 2 years ago and my hair was growing 1/2 inch a week but I had to stop because it started to making me abnormally dehydrated. You should not take single amino acids no longer then 4 weeks at a time then try and take a 4 week break.
This might be a short bus question but does L-cysteine make you look any different? I just keep picturing bodybuilders when I think of protein and amino acids.
i dont think it would, i've been taking amino 1500 3x a day for the past 4 months, i'm only 16 and i still look the same, i think gained a few pounds from it though, but i hadda work it off.
