Hi :)

How do you prep youself for a relaxer...
do you use a comb to detangle??

& if not how do you apply your relaxer?

With my first self-relax, I did not comb and I had a lot of trouble getting through my hair. Next time, I will try some type of detangling leave in and then combing and see how that works.

I stretch 13 + weeks and comb to detangle under the shower and to comb my leave-in through. After airdrying in a rollerset, my hair doesn't tangle back up once it has dried, even the roots. I relax usually the 4th day after washing. It's easy to relax the newgrowth - just apply and smooth with the back of the comb and/or fingers.:)

Thanks for the advice you guys.
I just know that Im almost 12 weeks post and I havent combed since my last wash, and I dont have any rollersetting skills, but Im trying to avoid a ton of manipulation until relaxer time..

and it usually takes about 2 days for my hair to airdry

I started flat ironing my hair a day before relaxing. It's the only way the relaxer doesn't just sit on my hair.

This sounds like a great idea, Anky. I think I might try this the next go around in a few months when I am due for a touch up. If the hair is already pretty straight, that should facilitate the whole relaxing process, so you don't have to worry about smoothing so much, and finding chunks of underprocessed hair afterward... :scratchch

Usually when I would go to my beautician with already straight hair whether it be the front roots with a curling iron or gel, my hair would already be straight before the relaxer and so my hair would ALWAYS come out under processed. One drip of sweat and my hair would be like what relaxer? As simple as it seems, it took me a while to grasp the fact that my hair must be naturally nappy when I go in for a touch up, forget all the smoothing techniques. The only problem is I hate to walk out in public looking crazy. So, I am surprised that she can flat iron before a relaxer and not be under processed or have breakage. But now that think about it she may be natural and this was always my problem when I was relaxed.

you mean to prevent super underprocessing?

Hmmm... I want to continue to be texlaxed, but I want to do a mild corrective on some old relaxed hair (to make it more wavy). Do you think that I should flat iron that part?

I am afraid to tell you yes because I don't want you to mess up your pretty hair. My hair just wouldn't relax and thermally straightening it was a last resort. My hair relaxed much better after doing so (even though it's still underprocessed; I didn't want to leave it on longer than 40 minutes).

Do a strand test and see if it'll work, goldensensation.
