is there any difference between leave-in conditioner and regular (non leave-in) conditioner? if any? how many of you use regular conditioner as a leave-in successfully?

I use a non-leave in conditioner (Suave coconut) when I do twistouts. FYI-I add castor oil and shea butter on top of that, then twist.

I like to use a dime/quarter sized amount of my DC (Pantene R&N mask) to my hair otherwise on top of a liquid leave-in (Fermodyl) before a rollerset. I've come a long way, but I am still learning.

It's all about the ingredients when it comes to what I leave on my hair.

I use a leave in specifically for that purpose. I find it is lighter than using regular conditioner which I have done in the past. I like the way my hair feels, it detangles better, and it shinier and smoother. I also don't get as much product build up by using the leave in.

yah, that's what i was wondering...how regular conditioner worked as leave-in? stylists try to make it seem like leaving in regular condish will have negative effects. great point regarding the ingredients. i want to consider some drugstore conditioners like Herbal Essences...i worry about the cones though. thx!

I only do a few regular cond. as leave ins., they are Mane N Tail, Suave and Giovanni Smooth as Silk, it's all about the ingredients, stay as natural as possible.

I use leave-in for detangling purposes.

Some ladies leave regular condish in overnight for extra moisturizing.

do you now...or have you ever left regular conditioner in your hair? whether you used it for detangling or as a leave-in for moisture?
i don't think it would be harmful for me to leave regular conditioner in my hair...that's what i'm trying to figure out. but, i think it's safe. i just don't want anything to hinder retaining growth. (don't want it to lead to breakage or anything.)

(your hair is beautiful, btw!)

I just started using CHI Silk Infusion Leave-In. It left my hair SOFT and manageable.

I think leave-ins are intended to provide lighter moisture and protection.

me~

You gotta be careful with that Mane n Tail as a leave-in. That's a lot of strong protein to be leaving on your hair.

I think the thing you'd need to beware of is too much moisture or too much protein - one will cause mushiness and breakage, and the other will cause hard hair and breakage. As long as you have your protein/moisture balance correct, it probably won't be a problem. I imagine you'd have to clarify more frequently to deal with the build up dependent upon whether the conditioners you use have cone or not.

I use a leave in for my braids.
But i use regular conditioner when my hair is left out. I use a small amount. It is thicker and my hair feels soft.
Once my leave in is finished I wont be buying anymore.

yeah pretty much what all of the ladies have said already... a leave-in conditioner is usually lighter than a regular/deep conditioner. I know one time when I had ran out of my Giovanni Direct, I added some distilled water to my AO HSR conditioner and used it as a leave-in and it worked fine... smile.....

I didn't see a purpose in Leave ins until I found Paul Mitchell The Conditioner. It's lighter than any other regular con, and it makes my hair ooober soft! It's amazing! Leaving regular conditioner in my hair, made my hair on the hard side and it looked rusty looking.

In Total Agreement!

I always use DC and then i apply leave in to do my rollers....Is good to have a bit of a light condish...it actually coats the hair to protect it from the styling.....

I am using Chi silk infusion and Infusion 23:lick:
