Someone on TikTok was wondering how they are supposed to moisturize their hair 3 to 4 times a week and there were a bunch of women in the comments confused on how to moisturize their hair. I know it's hard moisturizing without reverting a silk press. Can anyone give moisturize recommendations for women who have a silk press?

I like these products when I used to get my hair silk press when I was natural and my hair never reverted:

1. Cantu Grow Strong Strengthening Treatment

2. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5 in 1 Treatment

3. Keracare Conditioning Creme Hairdress

4. Keracare Overnight Moisturizing Treatment

5. Alodia Anti-Breakage Nourishing Butter Creme

The secret I learned is to apply a small amount of moisturizer at a time and not be heavy handed with it, so it won't weight the hair down or cause hair to revert. I heard great things on here about Keracare Oil Moisturizer with Jojoba Oil as well.

Hair that is appropriately prepared for a silk press should retain a level of moisture from the deep conditioning step, after the pressing process is completed. If my hair could not retain moisture for at least a full week then that would mean:
  1. My hair is severely damaged and porous
  2. I need a better deep conditioner
  3. I need a better moisturizer
  4. I need a better leave-in
  5. Or I need a better regimen
I believe anyone with healthy hair and an efficient regimen can retain moisture for days at a time. If hair necessitates remoisturizing it every other day, instead of a few or more days at a time, then it is generally NOT a good candidate for silk pressing; given that hair that doesn't maintain moisture will frizz easily and be MUCH more susceptible to heat damage than resilient, healthy hair that holds moisture well.

So, if someone wants their hair to feel supple and nourished while maintaining the moisture that was already deposited then a lightweight serum or oil will provide the "effect" they are seeking without the water content. Alternatively, someone whose hair holds moisture pretty well can use a light cream with a higher water content and prevent reversion also, but this is trickier and usually requires a combination of hair that is trained to hold moisture well AND a harder press(meaning higher heat during the straightening process).

If you know your hair reverts at the slightest hint of redeposited moisture, then you won't be using a water-based moisturizer after your press, but can still use serums or oils. If your hair holds moisture pretty well after it is pressed and doesn't revert easily, then a light cream moisturizer can be added to your options without reversion. That is what I have observed anyway, but like with any hair advice, you have ot take it with a grain of salt and see what fits your hair and regimen.

Anyhoo, I like moisturizing blow-dry creams if my hair dried out during frigid or scorching temperatures (usually takes weeks, not days, in very dry conditions for that to occur).
I like serums or a lightweight oil for soft pressed hair or a little nourishment from week to week.

Here are a few recommendations:

Serums/light oil mixes that do not cause reversion
  • Kerastase 8 Hour Nighttime Serum (most night serums have worked fine on my pressed hair without reversion)
  • Kiehl's Silk Groom Serum
  • Matrix Food for Soft Serum
  • Chi Silk Infusion
  • Lenghty Strands Serum
  • Biosilk Serum
  • It's A 10 Miracle Serum
  • Alterna Replenishing Moisture Hair Oil
  • Truss Night Spa Serum
  • Olapex 7
  • Moroccanoil Treatment
Creams that I can use on a hard press(this may not work for everyone especially if they don't like high heat and their press is fluffy to begin with)
  • Olaplex 6
  • Alterna CC Cram
  • Crack Leave-In Hair Fix
  • Kiehl's Cream with Silk Groom
  • It's a 10 Leave-In (all of them)
  • It's a 10 Smoothing Balm
  • Redkin 25 One United Leave-In
  • Mizani Style & Style Again
  • Sedal/Seda Liso
  • Doux: We Want Easy Texture Tamer
There is a lot I didn't list. Happy heat usage :D
