Y'all I am tired. I had big plans for my hair and a roller set today. I got all of my supplies; rollers, clips, fine tooth comb, Silk Elements, water bottle with (aloe vera juice, honeyquat, water, and a bit of SAA) and Skinny Serum. I DC'ed and my hair was feeling great.. I took my laptop in the bathroom (where all my tools were already spread out). I put it on Lorraine's you tube rollersetting tutorial (which I had already watched 4X).. I got my mix of purple and red rollers and was rhet to go..I tried to do the mohawk method. Made sure my hair was parted.. Here is where I think the process broke down.

My hair is very curly/wavy even with a relaxer. It does not go even SORT of straight until I comb it a million times with the fine tooth comb..

Clip placement. I cannot get my rollers not to roll down for nothing..when I got one of the first quadrants done..after starting over a million times I'm like okay I can do this. I guess I'm retarded because I thought I was putting em where she was putting them..hers were staying..mine were loosening up. By 1 hr.. I had 4 rollers in y'all.. my arms were tired and I was super cranky..but I pushed on! I almost had the front done in the next 45 mins..(but I started getting lax on the separation)..don't you know two of those mothasuckas started to unroll.. I had had enough..

It seems so easy. But that junk is hard. So I finally said *** it and unrolled the ones I had done (which had started to dry and actually looked okay..) until I looked at the back of this dry curly mop..and said well I'm keeping my hair appt for tomorrow and jumped back in the shower to wash the products out. So now I'm sitting here feeling defeated and vowing to never do this again. I could've saved myself 2 hrs and just wetbunned from jump.

Anyone else had a horrible first time rollersetting? Maybe I'll try again next year..:wallbash:

Don't feel bad the first time is not the easiest but it does get better over time. I remember my first time and it took me over an hour, but now I can do it in 30 min or less.

It may even be the first few times that it is difficult but with patience you can save your hair and your money.

HTH. Be encouraged and try again when you have the time.

ITA! Keep trying and stay positive. Like anything else, it's takes time to master a rollerset. I have been doing mine off and on for 5 years now and it isn't fun IMO but it is worth it!!:yep:

You can set your whole head in 30 mins... wow!

Rollersetting takes practice and trail and error. Don't give up. You'll get it eventually.

As for clip placement; be sure to clip the roller along with the hair thats at the base of your head. I'm not sure if that made sense but I don't know how else to explain it.

HTH, be encouraged.

I should post pictures of my first flat twist attempt. It looked bad but I'm too ashamed to do it!!

Don't wait a year to try again, it does get easier! You can do it. I struggled (over an hour with short hair) when I first reacquainted myself with roller setting 2 months ago. Now I'm down to about 30 minutes and getting good results. My hair is also healthier looking. You might also want to try macherieamour's rollersetting video. For me it was $20 well spent.

The first time I tried to rollerset it took me three hours to even get the rollers in right, then they started falling out. And it ended with my hair a hot jacked up mess, me sitting on the floor in my drawers crying at all the hair I pulled out and broke off.

I still haven't tried again.

Aww thanks.. But I'm like after tonight's experience.. I sure ain't about to spend $20 for something I know I should be able to learn for free. Maybe next week.. I am super Type A.. I hate when I can't accomplish something I should be able to do!

This is me.. and I wasn't even in a rush. I was going to do some work while under the dryer. It is almost making me want to get off my diet and have pizza! It p'ed me off that bad!

I decided that I am going to try again to relearn. I've been watching a ton of videos on youtube and stuff and the man unit has promised me a bagfull of the rollers with covers and my space helmet dryer.

He does not deal with me freaking out like that well.

I want to be able to do it. And girl if I can wind up able to do it anyone can.

That's working harder not smarter. If you could learn it for free (as in no cost of time or money), then you'd know how to do it by now. Either way, you have a cost. Spending time (hours) setting your hair is not free. There is a cost to you because you could have used that time to do something else more productive.

I'm not saying you have to buy her CD (I don't have it -- don't need it), but if I did need it, I would get it.

ETA: I didn't even have to read your whole post to know that it took you hours to roll your hair. There is a free YOUTube video that teaches rollersetting. Ask asummertyme(?) about it. I remember she posted something about that.

gurl i am under the dryer right now last week it took me 2 hours i felt like a fool this time it took me an 1 30 min and it still didnt come out like i want i hate rollersetting:wallbash::wallbash: but im going to keep trying keep ur head up u not the only one

I watched Lorraine's video from You Tube. Hers I thought was pretty informative and detailed. What's to say if I order a $20 DVD, it will help me? Because it helped others? I'm just cranky right now. And I rollersetting is just something that I'd said I try. Now I tried it, I'm over it.. LOL... went this long without knowing how! Maybe I'll pick it up another time.

The thing with rollersets is that you'll get better at it as you keep doing them. I learned by standing in front of the mirror and watching myself put each roller on. I find that the really long bobby pins attach better and is less wobbly.

Ju can dew it!

Awww! Your hair in the siggy looks beautiful. See I was already at 2 hrs!! And a 2 hr process doesn't work for my life.. If I could just get that clip placement down.... but then the parting/sectioning.. just seems so tedious..maybe bc I was using a lot of the smaller rollers.. I bet the black and grays are faster. But if I wanted straight hair, I would just flat iron.

THANKS:yep:

I saw those long bobby pins in in there... maybe I'll try those next time. I know how to work a bobby pin.. those godforsaken clips ripped out so much of my hair!

Now you got me thinking... I know those would probably work because they go all the way across..

I'm not saying it will definitely help you as Lorraine's is available. Just throwing it out there that you shouldn't eliminate the thought immediatly because it costs $20.

good luck with it next time. there are women on here BSL and beyond and it takes them 30 minutes or less. so it is not your hair length that is taking up the time. practice makes perfect so next time it may take you 1.5 to rollerset....and the time after that 1 hour. .and the time after that......

Hmm I never said that. I know for sure it isn't the length of my hair. It is my lack of SKILL..lol.. I am aware of that. But I think I will try Boston Maria's trick with the long bobby pins instead.. I think they may be easier to maneuver for me personally.

I don't know if this helps you or not, and I don't know how much hair you have (I'm scraping bsl), but I HATE ROLLERSETTING WITH THE PINS. I normally use magnetic rollers. I use 1 and 3/4 for my hair that is longer in the back and 1 1/2 for shorter layers in the top. You WILL HAVE A MILLION ROLLERS WHEN YOU FINISH. I MEAN A FREAKING MILLION, but your hair will get very straight this way, as the less hair you use on a roller, the straighter it will be.

Make sure you use two spray bottles, one with just straight up water. Saturate your hair with water (my hair is wavy too), and a light amount of setting lotion. When you comb through with the rat tooth comb (that section of your hair), you want to make sure it lays down sleek before you put it on a roller.

My sets take anywhere from 1 hour to 2 depending on how distracted I am listening to music, but I think I do a good job, because soooo many people have come up to me and told me that my hair looks good when I set :)

Girl...don't give up. What I did was practice on my dry hair with the pins (with the mesh rollers) and clips (with the magnetic rollers). This way you will not be that stressed when your hair is wet.

... two water bottles... diluted setting lotion instead of foam.. getting it all down. You have beautiful hair.. less hair = straighter.. got it! I guess I gotta try this crap again..

Yes on myself I can do about 30 min or less as long as I am not on the phone or being distracted but on my DD I can do it in 15-20 and it comes out way better.

It takes a lot of practice and I too have had those times when I just have rinsed it out and said never mind.

No matter what do what you feel is best for the health of your hair.
I do think that you could master it though since you say you have that personality.

I was on Lorraine's page yesterday trying to look at her tutorial to see if there was any tips that I could use but the connection was acting up.

It is a great tutorial.. So great that it made me go out and get all this crap!!! She made it seem so easy. I watched it 4X (all 3 of em) and I was like I can SOOO do this.

Now a blow dryer and a flat iron.. I'm surgical with..:lachen:

But I was all pumped up I just knew I was gonna be posting my first rollerset pics in the fotki..

Thanks for your advice.. at least I got a good DC out of it..

Hi everyone I am a newbie will post picture in the morning. I recently started to roll my hair with foam rollers, or I use the rollers with the plastic cap that comes with it. I never could get the rollers that you use the metal clip (maybe if I keep up the practice:wallbash:, very short on patience). maybe try with the plastic clap.

My first attempt at a rollerset had me stopping after 1 roller. The time it took to comb and part and get it just right was too much. I ain't got that kind of time. I know the only time I will have rollersets is if I go to a salon.

My hair is very curly/wavy even with a relaxer. It does not go even SORT of straight until I comb it a million times with the fine tooth comb..

I sooooooo feel you. I have super curly hair too and I just cannot do any type of mohawk rollerset. The only thing that has worked for me so far is the method in this link:

http://www.long-healthy-hair-advisor.com/roller-set-natural-hair.html

She has you part the hair in the middle and put the rollers in from the back.

I am still very new and rusty at rollersets myself but I will keep practicing. I feel I have no choice but to keep trying, because I am not going back to relaxing bone straight and blow drying. So consider trying this method and see if it works any better for you. Good luck.

yeah i gave up on magnetic rollers a while ago. i now only use my mesh rollers w/ end papers wrapped around. w/out the end papers i have a hard time getting the rollers to stay. i dip the end paper in water and wrap it around the roller. that way it's smooth on the roller. if i try to put the end paper around my hair and then try to roll up, my ends come out frizzy. this is what works for me. it used to take me over two hours w/ the magnetic rollers but w/ the mesh 45min-1hr.
