OK... I went to my regular stylist today for a relaxer. She based my scalp and afterwards she said "your hair is getting long!".....and proceeded to TRIM ! ok ok ok I knew my ends were chewed up because all of September and October I used heat and wore my hair out, and did not have a good water based moisturizer. It was only until November that I started doing protective styling and no heat. So then she put the relaxer in and after a while my temple was burning because I guess I had scratched the mess out of my temple. So she rinsed and neutralized. As she was putting on this medicated shampoo and conditioner, I asked her to do a deep conditioner treatment (I guess its with heat). She said that it would make the relaxer revert????? After she shampooed, she put in a conditioner and let it set for 15 minutes. She rinsed and rollerset my hair. Under the dryer I saw some hairs on my sweater that were about a centimeter long. So I think she cut about a centimeter. She took the rollers out, and put moisturizer on my hair, wrapped and unwrapped my hair. It turned out pretty good but I was still worried about the trim.

Questions

1. Im getting a relaxer in January before a 3-4 month stretch. How can I preserve my ends so she won't chop it all off. I know some of you might be saying "don't go back!" but I don't know how to do a relaxer, have had many many bad relaxer experiences (hence bald spots and patches of hair ___ this length).
2. How can conditioner make the hair revert back?? I don't understand this at ALL.
3. How do you "dust" or do the search and destroy method?

If any of you saw, I had a thread on breakage of my hair. Once I got the relaxer it immediately stopped breaking, but now I see where it broke off (at the crown). I definently will be doing a protein treatment next week.

Tell her not to trim.
Also make sure you are keeping your ends moisturized and protected. No heat or use it as little as possible.

I don't believe that using heat after your relaxer for conditioning purposes causes reversion either. I just got relaxed and my stylist used heat with some reconstructor for 15mins with no problem. I have done that before when I self relaxed and I never had any problems.

If you dont want it trimmed, be firm and say so, your paying her for a service, you should be able to decide what you want withoout being swayed. I dont know about dusting but Southergirl has her self-trimming method in her fotki which you can read. Lastly, in regards to saving your ends, i suggest rollersetting under a hooded dryer on medium with a leave in like Giovanni Direct. If you have to flat iron, leave out the ends, like the last 3 inches. I never ever see split ends this way and dont have to trim after every relaxer. To see what rollersetting can do for your ends, refer to my fotki, the October album, those ends are not trimmed.
