New here, and a question(college related)!

Hi everyone, this is my first time making an "actual post" and I have a question I am hoping to get suggestions for. I am 18 years old and I will be heading off to college in the fall in NJ, and I am unsure what I will do with my hair while I am away (5 & 1/2 hours away from home, Maryland) I would like my hair to look presentable, but at the same time I don't know how much time I will have to devote to it. I haven't had a chance to see if there were any suggested salons in NJ/NYC yet, so perhaps that could be a possibility as well.

Does anyone have any hairstyle suggestions? and Also, Do you think braids/weave/etc would be a plausible idea? I know braids are fine for a few months, but I know next to nothing about weaves or anything else.

If it matters, my hair is relaxed. I am working on figuring out what hairtype I am, but once I find out I will add it in. Kind of embarassing that I don't know as much about caring and styling my hair as much as my friends, but I've heard nice things about this forum, and I hope to learn alot!

I'm from NJ so I know lots of salons...which college will u be going to if you don't find me asking???
The one thing I can say is that no matter where you go you will have easy access to salons. Just thinking off the top of my head about colleges (Rutgers Kean, Princeton) the all have access to salons and NYC of course. I would not worrk about it, just do what you usually do. I'm starting college this fall as well and I know the first few weeks will be hectic but after that you will organize your time and have time to do what you want with your hair

I will be attending Fairleigh Dickinson University, the Metropolitan campus. I'm hoping I won't have too hard of a time with my hair, but it's gonna be a big change having to find a different salon to go to, and not knowing anyone up there...lol

Welcome. I think braids would be a nice choice. Give it a try! It's a protective style to help you maintain length and it doesn't require much maintenence.

Welcome to LHCF. I'll be a freshmen this year too @ Howard in DC. I'm in the same boat as you, me and hair styling aren't the best of friends just yet. I'm still trying to perfect my rollerset, I'm getting better though. Haha.

I'm thinking you should probably start the year off with braids until you can find some more info about the salons in the area. If you don't want to do braids, try doing rollersets on yourself. They have a bajillion tutorials on here about rollersetting, etc. It's fairly easy to learn, it just takes some time to master.

I have a few friends up that go to Fairleigh Dickenson: not sure which campus though: and u'll be suprised to kno that u'll have extra time to devote to ur hair: i got a trusty friend to relax my hair: u can find someone on campus cuz i'm pretty sure u'll find a LHCF member that goes 2 ur school. Also if u have hair goals and u want long hair: lookin into other challenges that specify for weaves & braids. Learning how to baggy, rollerset, and other methods help maintaining the hair:

Oh, you will be in Teaneck/Hackensack area. I'm from Hackensack (trying to move back). There's a popular Dominican Salon that A LOT of people go to on Teaneck Road called Elsa's which is pretty inexpensive for a wash and set, and there are quite a number of salons on Main St in Hackensack. Some of the students there would probably be able to point you in the right direction of which salons to check out. Also, the JCPenny Salon at the Garden State Plaza has some good stylists, my Mom goes to one there that she really likes. Will you have a car? The bus system should be pretty good over there if you don't. Anyways, good luck with school and everything and welcome to NJ!!!

HOLY CRAP, PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY FROM NJ AND SOME ARE MOVING HERE AND DON'T MIND????!?!?! Pardon all the caps, lol but i've lived in NJ for most of my life and whenever I hear something like this, its mind-boggling!

Well, hopefully if all goes good for me, i'll be a frosh too in september. lol keep your fingers crossed for me! I come to find (especially if you're going to any of the Rutgers campus, Rider, or Rowan) you're usually in GREAT distance from stylists. The only thing is if you're going to live in a more suburban atmosphere, then you're looking at DEPARTMENT STORE stylists. They aren't bad (used to go to one in a JCPENNEY around my way) but they do overcharge. But if you don't mind the concept, they can come in quite handy around here and will stop you from hopping more than a bus or two.

Also, They don't have so many BSS's unless you're in heavily urban areas so its harder to come by. In fact, I don't buy any products from my area at all- As mentioned before, the only place you can really truly find the Sally beauty supplies or like BSS is in the "hood" (for lack of better terminology) or deep in the suburbs which are only accessible by car (and thats if you're living in SOUTH JERSEY/CENTRAL JERSEY- can't really speak about the rest of the state so much). In fact, I only buy products offline. Better deal the whole way around I think and just easier.

Lol and girl, i'm not trying to scare you! But just keep in mind unless you're up in trenton, or up north nearer to newark, you'll have a harder time finding places you really would want to go to (although the plus side of going to school in nj is youre a hop skip and a jump away from NY and PHILLY) so keep this all in mind!

Welcome! I would recommend braids at first and the follow the crown and glory method for taking care of them here, which a lot of women have had success doing. That will give you enough time to research various salons and prices in the area. If the braids are still working for you continue them but if not then I would get a basic style at one of the salons of your choice and see how you like it.

During my first two years of college is when I went natural because I am very picky about who touches my hair. Never did I think to do it myself. I mean, I wanted to perm it myself because everyone else was doing it knowing dang on well that I had been going to the hair dresser since I was in 2nd grade and knew nothing about doing chemical treatments myself. I applaude you for seeking help instead of messing up your hair, wish I was that smart.....LOL

I can think of far funkier places (for example, PHILADELPHIA- i'm sorry philly ladies, but the whiffs of funk -especially in olde city near the horse carriages- STINKS TO THE HIGHEST STATES OF HELL! You'd swear you sunk down below somewhere and died. lol Jersey DOESN'T EVEN begin to stink that much. Lol and you're right about Exit 13- I'M ALL ABOUT EXIT 8A! lol but thats deep in the country so thank goodness. I mean apart from "forest funk" and that ain't even that funky! lol NO JOKE THATS WHAT I'VE HEARD- the ARMPIT! lol but.... then again since we've both lived here for a while, I think if it did stink we'd NEVER BEGIN TO NOTICE! lol i think its slightly similar to the famed "NEW JERSEY COUNTRY HICK ACCENTS" you don't even realize it til you get to the city!

I know that's right! I've been to Pine Bluff Arkansas and I think NOTHING compares to the smell there!!!

Oh wow, Thank you everyone for replying! I wasn't expecting such a response, hehe. I think I will definately start off the year with braids, check out the different salons/places that were suggested, and see how it goes from there! I really do apprecate this, sometimes I don't know what I was thinking when I decided to go 5 and a half hours from home.

I'll also be looking into some of the different challanges and things, as I want to learn some tips to help care for my hair a bit better.

Welcome SimplyStarstruck!!! I think you should start the year off with braids as well. I did for my freshman year last year and it helped out alot because you will be tryin to get used to things and the college life, and the last thing you wanna worry about is tryin to look cute and style ur hair lol. I go to school in Northern NJ, but I attend an all girls school so I get to wear alot of protective styles. I wish you success in your first year, I know how u feel about going far from home. I live in South jersey and my school is 2 hours away and I can never get my hair done how I want it because Im far from home, but girl u will find someone on campus who will hook you up!!
