I know it's late, but I felt like venting. I ran into an old class mate, and she noticed my hair and how healthy it was. I started to tell her about all the wonderful tips I learned here on the forum until, she started talking like a hater. This chick tried to say because I had kids thats the only reason for all my healthy long hair, as if I don't have a good grade of hair. I was like I always had a full head of hair, just never took good care of it like must girls do in high school, I wore a ponytail all the time, I just didn't care. Now that I wear my hair out and in different styles she and few others started to notice. In my mind I was like you wig wearing SOB or should i say DOB, lord foregive me but, this girl never ever had hair she been wearing wigs sense the 6th grade, she has a hair disorder or something anywho felt mad at her and didn't want to talk about my hair with her any more, because she could of just said something nice about my hair and left it like that. has anyone here on the borad ran into this problem before?

 YES--lots of us. Haters are like roaches. Take it as a compliment and keep up the good work.

It's hell at the top!

Yup exactly what she said...it just means you're obviously doing something right...doesn't it make you really want to achieve you hair goals even more??

You know that's what I think is going to happen. When I reach bsl I think people are gonna say things like my hair was already that long I just cut it off or I didn't have to wash my hair that many times a week for it to grow out. Some people are always gonna find a way to belittle you. Take it as a compliment.

Totally OT. This has been driving me nuts, you look just like my cousin. Everytime I see your pic I think I need to call her. Even your smiles are alike

Ha ha! Don't even sweat it. Haterism is the highest form of flattery. If you weren't worth it, then she wouldn't take the time to "hate" on you!

Okay, so I just had to share this with you guys because I hear it on here all the time but experiencing it for the first time is just AMAZING…but you guys prepared me very well and I want to thank yall because if you all had not prepared me…I would have snapped out and lost it….anyway…There’s this girl that works in my department as a tutor and she always wear her hair in a bun but you can tell she has long hair and it’s very healthy, I think she’s like a 3b/3c…well today she came in with her hair down because I mentioned about wanting to see it down….anyway our manager/boss or whoever you want to call her says to me, you see she wore her hair down today…and I’m like I see and it’s so pretty and then I was asking the girl (don’t want to give her name out because I think someone from my school lurks here)…anyway I was asking the girl how long does it take to flat iron her hair and she says about 2 hours, and our manager asks her why she don’t wear it down more often and she says because it takes too long to flat iron it…so I’m like…girl, you can do a lot of other things to your hair, like wearing a braid out, wearing your hair wavy, caruoso sets, etc…and then I said I would wear my hair in two bantu knots and then take it down and have big waves…my boss says to me you can do that to your hair now…I’m like I know but I want to wait until my hair gets longer to wear all of them styles. Then she says your hair will never get to her length:eek: . Her texture is different from yours:confused: . She also said your hair was never that length before so it’s not going to ever get that long now:perplexed …The girl has bra strap hair by the way…I said to my manager my hair was never given the opportunity to grow that long because I abused my hair…..not washing, dc’ing, moisturizing, etc…..I tell my manager my hair is almost that length right now...she walks out the department…mind you she has never seen my hair before because I always baggie…but this girl that knows about this site told my manager my hair is long. She got me when she said matter of factly, "Your hair will never get that long, you don't have the same texture as her"

ETA: Sorry my post is sooooo long. I tried to make it shorter. I really did:look: More was said but I know yall don't want to read an online book:D

I've been through the same thing. When I finally stop getting my hair cut often and decided to grow it out, everyone felt the need to check for "tracks" and have smart comments. Like someone said, it just shows that you're doing something right.

Girl, puhleeze! I love your hair!!! People are crazy!! So many AA people have been brainwashed into thinking that typical AA hair cannot grow. I even notice comments from little girls (elementary school age) who think that natural styles and afros are UGLY!!! There was a little girl modeling on Rip The Runway this weekend and her hair was in the cutest fro and this little girl (relaxed hair - 11yrs old) was just mortified when she saw it. I didn't have time to entertain the conversation with her but I will one day when we are not at a big family gathering.

Ok, those are really true haters. I don't like when people do that. Why can't they just see that they are stuck in "black girls can't grow their hair unless it's genetics" mentality? Meanwhile, everyone on this site (lurkers too) are changing their haircare habits and getting gorgeous hair with every new tip. Ya'll better just brush those haters off along with their negativity 'cause it ain't gonna do ya'll no good. Do what ya'll do and before you guys know it, you all will be walking around with swangin' hair. Stay strong ma sistas :) .

I have had people say hater-ish comments to me as well but to me when they say “oh your hair is that long because u don’t have regular black hair” WTF is regular black hair anyway? Its not like there is a set hair type but I think they mean since I don’t look like a 4b, anyway to me its an excuse to not give me a compliment but to push it off on what they feel is all because of genetics.
I guess I can take it two ways, the other day at work a guy was like “wow your hair has really gotten long pretty fast” and I said “yea I have been growing it out” then he said “that’s because you got that Indian blood in you” but really cant all black people claim to have Indian in them these days? I generally choose to not be nitpicky and to just say thank you and smile tho.

I know. People do it without even noticing that they are being negative. I gave a coworker a compliment recently saying, "Girl, I'm trying to get my hair to your length." (She has between APL and brastrap.) She responded, "Well it won't get there over night. It took me years to get where I am today." I just looked at her with my mouth open. She then followed it up with, "But, mine seems to be stuck right here. I guess I'm not doing all the conditioning that I should be." I didn't say another word.

I agree. She wasn’t worthy of your help or your tips. But I don’t think you should take it personal because I think her comments were more about her own hair issues than about your hair. Sometimes women/young ladies make excuses for why they don’t have healthy hair or long hair and other people do. It seems like a no-brainer but it wasn’t until this forum that I really realized that healthier hair makes it easy to retain length. Plus I’ve been 'that girl' in the past (I never offended anyone though) but I just nodded my head when girls/women told me tips but I never thought my hair could be like theirs because I was used to it being short & damaged. I made up many excuses in my mind why I couldn’t I have hair like that. For instance I would tell myself “She’s mixed, of course her hair looks like that.” If she wasn’t mixed, I’d tell myself “She’s a natural, no perms, so of course it’s healthy and long.” And if the hair was relaxed I’d tell myself, “Her mother knows all the secrets of hair care and passed them on to her.” I always felt like people with long hair knew all these hair “secrets.”
So don't let this girl get to you. We're not going to let her take anything away from you. YOU have made your hair healthy and long and I'm sure that took some time and effort. :)

I so needed this post. I work with some real haters at my job. I always wear my hair in a ponytail or bun--not just because it's a protective style but because I like to wear my hair up. I have to sign in at the secretary's office when I get to work and I always see them looking at my hair and making noises under their breath. The couple of times that I've worn my hair down their mouths were to the floor because they didn't think that I had any hair. All I can say is shake them haters off and keep it moving. I personally refuse to sacrifice the health of my hair just to prove to others that I have long hair.

My so-called bestfriend is like that, everytime I see her she's telling me that I should cut my hair so hers can be longer and then when I do cut my hair (major cut once a year) she gets very excited and goes on and on about how I should keep it that length.

Girl yes, now that I use Henna you can see obvious changes in my hair but they just keep hating talking about I must be mixed with something. Why do I have to be??? That is why I don;t even bother to tell them about the site anymore, because they always want to talk stuff down!!
