Ponytail/bun breakage??

Hi ladies! I have a question that has been bothering me for years... I've always had pretty bad breakage in the crown of my head. When I would go to stylists, they would notice and ask me if I wear my hair in a ponytail a lot (I do, I run track so its ponied up 5-7 days a week). But its not breaking in the perimeter of my head, which are the strands that would be in contact with the hair band. Seems to me that the hairs on the crown would be protected because they would be in the middle of the pony:spinning:.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone has a remedy for this. I am planning on wet bunning as soon as my hair is long enough, but I don't want to make the problem worse!

TIA

I see your point exactly. You might want to look up info on crown area breakage. Plenty of women have this problem (including me). It seems it's just a totally different texture from the rest. I can't say you're doomed but you'll have to really treat that area different from the rest of your hair. Usually it's the thickest part of your head so maybe it doesn't get the moisture like the other parts???

There are so many theories on why this happens and it still amazes a lot of the women on here. I think there's even a grow your crown area challenge.

Good luck in searching and hopefully other women will chime in with more info for you.

ETA: I'm not sure if you are using track hair around your own hair since you mentioned it's not long enough to bun yet. But if you are using track hair and using hair pins/bobby pins then they could definitely cut into your crown and cause breakage without it necessary affecting the perimiter. Think of how a pin can dig into your scalp if it's not in there right.

Hi... Is your hair wet when you pull it up into a ponytail. I have found that when the hair is wet, that crown area doesn't dry as fast as the outer hair. Sometimes not until days later. I have seen ladies with it wet a week later and this produces a mildew kind of smell and that (whatever cause the smell) possibly weakens the hair. And where the perimeter looks healthy the crown is very damaged. Just a thought... Hope you can figure this mistery out.

I never quite considered that it was my daily ponytail from wet-bunning. That's a possibility and sleeping on that tight bun would have put more pressure on those fine hairs at the crown. Possibly, just part of the problem. Mine is coming along nicely now...but I guess I have looser hair now. I got those ficcare clips (faux-ficcare) and twisty pins from Goody (what the heck to call it). What I've noticed in the past, when I loosely bunned up very high, my crown was moister.

I've been dipping my scrunchie in JBCO before putting my hiar in a bun. Even with a ponytail I put JBCO at the crown to reduce breakage. So my breakages as slowed down and my crown is now stronger and thicker thanks to the Castor Oil
