Ready to be APL
The bane of many natural heads and some texturized/texlaxed heads existence
In this post I gave my technique for eliminating the above but never got around to writing an entire post about it. I felt now was a good time: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=495886&highlight=single+strand+knots

I was natural for almost 2 years and by the end I was developing single strand knots as my hair got longer. My DD who has been natural all her life used to get them all the time and I could not figure out why. I moisturized and all of that but still always had to cut her hair to get rid of them.
WELL last year I had an epiphany. As I was moisturizing her hair I thought because our hair twirls around into a coil (no matter how tightly coiled the hair is), the moisture was not getting to the ends well enough. Yes I was pulling the moisturizer to the ends but that was not the best way to do it.
Sooooo,
I decided to apply the moisturizer in sections like I normally was but instead of just running my hand down the section to the end I changed my technique. I twirled each section (think doing a bantu knot or shirley temple) as I was twirling one way and then other (so the juices and berries would hit as much hair as possible) I made sure to work with gravity; meaning as I twirled I pulled the hair outward or downward (they both work) to stretch the hair out. I twirled until I could not twirl anymore all the way to the very ends of the hair. This made sure all the hair was untangled and moisturized.
My daughter stays in some type of twisted or braided style but when I dont feel like doing her hair and she just wears a pony puff I have her moisturize her hair in sections and utilize the same technique and then put some braids or twist in to keep the hair stretched

Nice! I do this to moisturize the coils at the ends of my braids but didn't think to do it on loose hair. When my hair is loose again next month, I'll try it.

Thanks - I'll give it a try - my hair is SL natural 4b and im noticing SSK's. I know they're bad news but I love searching for them and cutting them out :look:

In all honesty have to eliminate them :ohwell:

I noticed that the only way to help my hair with SSKs was to stretch it while it dried. I can't do wash n gos because I would have numerous SSks from it. So now I just 2 strand twist and wear it like that. Well that's when my hair is not in a full sew-in which is not often now a days.

Thank you, but I am not getting the twirling motion you are doing. I take it it is not the same as twist. So are your twirling it around your finger(ref shirly temple curls) :perplexed

I have coily hair and even with finger combing by the time my fingers get to the bottom I am creating knots that were not there before that I have to pull out.

Yes it is exactly like doing a shirley temple. Take smaller sections if need be. Also, dont forget to stretch the hair as you are twirling (it must be done simultainiously). Make sure the hair has enough moisture and if need be detangle the hair a bit with your favorite comb. A denman brush (modified or as is) works well.

Let me know.

Thanks! I'm going to try this today. I'm newly natural and could not figure out why some of my strands were knotting up.

Oh so it's like doing a finger coil but you stretch it out at the same time? But once you go to put the hair in a different style or what not won't you have to detangle again since it will be in the finger coils you created?

HI!

The coils will not be small. they will be fairly large and you wont be twirling so tight that it will create a tight coil.

Imagine this:

Seperate the hair into four quads. Take one quad and seperate into 4-5 sections. Now put some moisture on one of those mini sections. Now take that mini section and start twirling AND at the same time downward so the hair will be stretched. Repeat this all around your head.

Once the hair is done you can style as you want to.

Can you do video or take pictures as a public service for us chronic ssk sufferers?

I can do this, when my daughter comes home I will create a video. It will only be released to paid members.

I will create on with the braided style she has now.

I will also do one on loose hair at a later date.

i cant make a visual on this:nono: it sounds like making a bunch of coils in the hair which would not work because some parts f my hair dont coil up. i keep ssk away by detangling and smoothing my hair well before it dries no mater what style in wearing.

Thanks, that would be great! I'm having a hard time trying to imagine what you are saying. I'm struggling with SSKs and while I could cut 1.5 inches to be rid of them, there's no point in losing length if they're just going to come back. I look forward to your video!

I will be putting up photos this weekend when I do my DD's hair. I wont be doing a video only stills

I am sorry for the delay I honestly forgot about it.
