Ready to be APL
The bane of many natural heads and some texturized/texlaxed heads existence
In this post I gave my technique for eliminating the above but never got around to writing an entire post about it. I felt now was a good time: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=495886&highlight=single+strand+knots
I was natural for almost 2 years and by the end I was developing single strand knots as my hair got longer. My DD who has been natural all her life used to get them all the time and I could not figure out why. I moisturized and all of that but still always had to cut her hair to get rid of them.
WELL last year I had an epiphany. As I was moisturizing her hair I thought because our hair twirls around into a coil (no matter how tightly coiled the hair is), the moisture was not getting to the ends well enough. Yes I was pulling the moisturizer to the ends but that was not the best way to do it.
Sooooo,
I decided to apply the moisturizer in sections like I normally was but instead of just running my hand down the section to the end I changed my technique. I twirled each section (think doing a bantu knot or shirley temple) as I was twirling one way and then other (so the juices and berries would hit as much hair as possible) I made sure to work with gravity; meaning as I twirled I pulled the hair outward or downward (they both work) to stretch the hair out. I twirled until I could not twirl anymore all the way to the very ends of the hair. This made sure all the hair was untangled and moisturized.
My daughter stays in some type of twisted or braided style but when I dont feel like doing her hair and she just wears a pony puff I have her moisturize her hair in sections and utilize the same technique and then put some braids or twist in to keep the hair stretched
