I'm natural and I have been dyeing my hair with Bigen oriental black for about 4 years now, and I am desperately wanting to change the color to like a auburn, dark red, or plum color. I have been trying to dye my hair for like 3 weeks and it's not taking the color not even a little bit. I tried Clairol textures and tones and Clairol Natural Instincts and none of it took even with me leaving it on for 30 mins. Then I bought some more Bigen in chestnut thinking maybe Bigen will color over its own brand but no luck there either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

OP, I hope you're doing DT and PT's like crazy. You're not scared of getting damaged/ fragile hair from over processing your hair 4-5 times over???

Wouldn't you have to lift/bleach the black color to get a lighter color to take?

I think you should grow out the black dyed hair, if you want to change it up!

I always thought that when you dye your hair black with permanent dye, you need to strip your hair of the color before going lighter. I vaguely remember watching an old episode of "What Not to Wear" years ago where they had to bring in a professional colorist that specialized in removing black hair dye just to lift this woman's box dyed black hair to a natural brown. The process took hours and I could only imagine how damaged her hair was afterwards. If you're concerned with the overall health of your hair, I would just let the color be and grow it out gracefully with the help of quality semi-perminant rinses. If you're willing to risk the health of your hair, then find a very good and seasoned colorist to help you.

I think I'm just going to grow it out I fear bleaching because I don't want my hair to fall out. Oh well..:-(

You can't lift/lighten color with color. The process to lighten your hair will be damaging. Leave it alone. Bigen would have to be bleached. Stop what your are doing it's a waste of time. If you were serious about it then you need to go to a professional colorist & it'll be "color correction". It's gonna cost you $ to get it done right by an actually color specialist. Unless you want to spend $ at a high end salon, I repeat leave it alone

Thanks guys for the advice. I just wasn't thinking when I did this so now I'm stuck with this color until it grows out.

You could put a rinse on top so at least in the sun it can have a reddish or auburn look to it. But that's not going to make it lighter it will just give it a red hue on top of a dark base.

Try that. You can put the brightest red rinse on top that you can find & it will give you that red shimmer when you are outside.
