Protecting previously colored hair

... when touching up highlights...

I read that you can use conditioner to protect previously colored hair, just like with relaxers.

months ago, overlapping while touching up roots literally tore my hair out. Overlapping must be avoided. But how weird will it look if there is stripey looking hair (color at the roots, color at the ends, and dark in the middle)?

I am only talking about painting ten strips in my part. So if it ends up breaking off, I will just part on the other side. In fact, I can part on the other side when I get tired of the color period!!! Cool!

I can't deal with four inches of roots! And I like the effect of just a little bit of light color on the top layer.

Has anyone done this before? I plan to do it next weekend and will post pics.
