Question: Extreme Wind vs HalfWigs While Avoiding Breakage

I have two very particular questions. If a thread on this already exists, I missed it, but I did look here and google for a couple of hours. I just feel as though all the ladies that use pins are outside for such a short time in the wind, it's not an issue or else there is no wind where they are so it's not a concern.
  • Do I have to braid my hair in a particular pattern so that when I put pins in it is more secure, despite 50+ mph winds?
  • If I choose to leave the combs in (or at least the one in the front), is coating the comb with an oil like castor oil enough or should I also avoid particular braid patterns to ease stress?
TIA! I know there are TONS of threads/videos on securing wigs and avoiding breakage but I just don't find the answer I'm looking for. I just want to know if one braid pattern is less stressful than another or if oiling the combs is enough.

I can't say I've worn a wig in a day with 50 mph winds yet but pins give me the security I need in moderately windy conditions. If it was windier I would probably just wear a hat or scarf to keep the hair in place until I was indoors. Sometimes I sew the wig down (i.e. to my braids like a weave) using a few stitches around the perimeter if I'm planning to wear it for a few days - but this would probably work for high wind situations as well. I've never tried combs.

Braid pattern - I do a different one each time simply coz I enjoy variety but for what it's worth it's also good not to put stress on the same areas each time so it's beneficial to mix it up. I'd say if you have a delicate hairline then go easy on it and overall make sure your braids are never too tight.

I just braid straight back and I use 3-4 bobby pins to keepthe hair wig secure. I don't like using the comb b/c it cause breakage on my hair.

thanks ladies.

Tiye the hat is probably a good idea on the days when the wind is ridiculous. it gets super cold on those days too so its probably a necessary, im usually in a glued down lacefront or braids b/c im scared of a halfwig being swept up. i like the suggestion to vary braids also. thank you.

ms.blue i have my hair braided straight back, its been secure all 3 days ive worn HW, ill start bobby pinning the back and work my way around. baby steps. i know my fear of the wig vacating my head on a windy day is irrational. the wind is bad maybe 75% of the time once winter hits. thanks for answering. LOVE ur puff :giggle:

It's a REALLY good question for someone who lives where there's heavy winds. Be prepared. Because, surely if I saw someone's wig fly off in the wind, I would be ROTFLMAO!!! Not funny to the one whose doo is in the wind tho, I know. But, even the question made me giggle.

Well I've said it a few times but I have been on rollercoasters (up and down and all around) with my wig and it stayed on my head. I don't use pins though. I was using the comb in the front but it started to hurt my head so I cut it out.

NJoy yea, the thought of a rebellious wig always makes me giggle, until i realize it could very well be mine...smdh...id be mortified. walking across the quad minding my own business. not an encouraging image. although when i was younger i did have a pony tail jump off my head in the middle of a sporting event. sigh. threw it aside, finger combed my hair and kept playing. the white folks were so freaked out. my dad and sis were ROFLing. oh the love we show our kin lol.

Anew you make me wanna go to a theme park lol. yea combs are definitely secure, love them, but fear the breakage. you'd think wig makers would work on a less damaging alternative.

Just posting to see if I get the Error Message. I put pins in my half wigs it feels more secure this way. Try to pin to your wig cap or get a net wig cap it's easier to pin to
