Relaxed/texturized/natural- is the grass always greener?

Okay, I'll admit now that I haven't read the whole thread, but here are my 2 cents. I was natural for almost a decade. I learned a lot about the true nature of my hair and we had a love-hate relationship. Love: my texture, just being natural, appreciated the uniqueness of my hair, super thickness and lushness, etc. Hate: limited styling options (due to shrinkage and my own lack of knowledge @ the time), overused heat and caused damage, hair only grew in weaves (again, lack of knowledge), some low moments on the dance floor @ clubs (b/c my hair went from armpit to chin length after dancing  ). I decided after coming here that relaxed hair didn't automatically equal damaged hair (I had a superiority complex about my natural hair eventhough it was always str8ened w/heat  ) b/c there was so much healthy, long relaxed hair here. I also wanted to try to live w/o heat and for me that required a chemical. I opted to texturize b/c I do like my nat. text. and my hair has alot of natural curl that I wanted to be able to rock. I had been coveting Holly Robinson-Peete's and others kinky-curls. I haven't regreted it for one moment. I have so many more styling options and rarely wear my hair str8 like I did when it was natural. I don't like running to the touch-up, so I try to make myself wait for 15 weeks, but I am biased esp when I have a good growth spurt. :ohwell:

I think it depends on what you want your hair to do and your comfort level. My hair was always a consideration when I thought about doing anything involving water and not b/c I'm self hating, but b/c it took me 3 hours to wash, detangle and blow-out my hair. Now I wash my hair on a whim, dry it if I want or just continue w/my day. I love the freedom it's given me, which is why I wouldn't change a thing :nono:.

This thread is the bomb. I love reading all of your stories, especially when you have found the perfect "answer" for you and your hair. I haven't seen my natural hair since I was 12 or 13 and after seeing so many of your albums I am now curious about my natural texture. The main thing I get from your posts is that we have many options to choose from and there is not just one way for us to do our hair.

Thanks to all of you for sharing. It makes such a difference for us newbies!
((((HUGS)))))
