My blood tests just revealed my

  • iron is fine (borderline anemic 11 something thank God its up)
  • Thyroid is fine

So what else causes major shedding? I'm using good products, have a good protein moisture balance, ends are not split, so it makes me think it maybe internal. Any suggestions?

I wasn't able to relax for about 5 weeks after surgery and doing that time I sprayed my hair with Nu Gro Moisturizer. When I relaxed last week, I had very little shedding or hair loss. You might want to give it a try.

Wonderful thread...

I am trying to recover from low iron right now... My hair had shed something awful.. In May my iron level was 18 when the dermatologist checked.. Lastly when my ob checked it went lower to 11 in november while pregnant with my daughter :wallbash: I was taking iron tablets once a day with prenatal vitamins.. Yesterday I bought floradix liquid iron after reading posts from search engine..

I am hoping my iron level increase soon....

What IS major shedding? More than 100 hairs a day? So much hair loss that your hair is thinning? If the answer to both the last two questions is no, then I'd say stop fretting. I think people blow this "shedding" thing way out of proportion. Don't forget at any one time 10% of your hair strands are in the resting and shedding stage of the growth cycle, and if you consider how many hairs you have, you can sorta see that quite a number are in that stage so shedding 700 hairs a week is no biggie.

I'd only worry about shedding if my hair was thinning overall. Then and only then would I look into hormones, systemic conditions (candidiasis), autoimmune disease. Otherwise all this worry about nothing will just lead to self-induced hair loss.

Have you had surgery lately? I did a couple months ago and my doc said a side effect of the anesthesia is shedding. My hair is shedding like crazy, although it seems to be starting to slow down some. Hope you figure it out.

Thanks ladies for your input. Ok heres the story......

Its been shedding alot for the last few 2-3yrs. Like all my life I would only have a few strands when I combed. But now its as if I'm going through chemo

Nothing major in my life happening now that wasn't happening before. Its major shedding though. If I do a roller set (looks thinner) and put some type of oil or serum it looks extra thin. Like see through thin OMG. I still have much more hair than the average person because it was extra thick to begin with. Thats not the problem. I've probably shed about 65% of my original thickness.

This is coming from someone who had wig thick hair. It sheds like an old wig. It doesn't break. It just sheds long hairs. I take care of my hair really really well, I started about 8 mos ago taking vits that you ladies recommend here on this web site. Nothing has worked.

I even started the garlic. But that made the low iron worse by way of excessive period flow. So I'm back to square 1.

OMG I've found a sista with a similar problem lol. Well, my iron was below 8 before. Now its at 11. The dr said its borderline anemic. So was yours at 11 also? And you experienced alot of shedding also? Maybe thats it then. I purchased several cast iron skillets and I'm trying to cook more. But they are a chore to clean as I can't place them in the dish washer.

No not on birth control pills. My dr did decide to test hormones..................

Yes mine was an 11 also.. I believe my iron had been low for years and I never realized it until my hair shedded in clumps and kept shedding non-stop. Not until I noticed my hair density was thin and see-thru is when I said something is not right. It had to be internally b/c I wasn't doing anything different that would cause the continuous shedding from the root.. When I got my blood work checked and saw the dermatologist she said that my iron levels were half that of what they should be in healthy women my age. The iron level should be atleast 40ml for women and initially mine was 18 which was not good and then it decreased to 11.. My hair was BSL and when it started to become see-thru, I just cut about 3-5" off so it could look heathy at the ends. :ohwell:

I was prescribe 325mg of ferrous sulfate w/65mg of elemental iron that I took once a day, when my level decreased from being pregnant I had to take them twice a day.. As of this week, I purchased Floradix Liquid Iron, that should absorb better than the tablets.. I also have to go back to the doctor in a couple of months to check iron levels to see if they are back to normal.. While going through this I noticed that there are many women who have the same problem.. The doctor would always tell me I am not anemic, you don't have to be anemic for your blood levels to be low :nono:.

Update: Hormones are fine. I expected them to be. So now the PA says my doc tested my hemoglobin and not my iron. So a panel on my iron is being tested now.

I'm wondering can your hemo be slightly low but iron levels sit at a low mark. Anyone knows?

I experienced severe shedding almost two years ago and I didn't know where it was coming from. My stylist suggested I take hair vitamins. I purchased Grogranics hair vitamins (they're kinda expensive...like $20/bottle and each bottle only lasts 2 weeks). I started taking those and within a month my shedding had stopped and my hair started to thicken back up (I have thick hair too) and grow so much healthier. After about 4-5 months I stopped taking them and my hair no long sheds like it did that time.

I'm not sure if that will work for you, but I thought I'd share. Best of luck!

UPDATE: Testosterone is on the low end of normal...BUT my DHEA is slightly BELOW normal. I've been told this is a hormone linked to hair loss. Anyone?
