Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

Shrinkage. How many natural ladies out there have mixed feelings about it? It seems that when I wash my hair and allow it to airdry, I am wishing that it was a looser pattern, but when I get my hair straightned, I pray to God that it will kink up after a wash.

I only have a twa but so far i'm liking the shrinkage i have. I like my twa when i comb it out, then as the day goes on it coils up and i really like how it looks then too. BTW, I thnk your hair looks great exactly how it is now /images/graemlins/smile.gif -- jainygirl

Natural ladies, any response?

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

I would like less shrinkage but my hair pattern suits me just fine. I just wish my hair was the same length straight and curly!

I have a few issues...lol. It also depends on the look I'm going for. I love that full and wild look and can get that easily when my hair is damp after rising and towel blotting. Then, sometime between then and the time I leave the house, things change! I mean, it still looks fine, but it's so shrunken. Grrrr! I mean people are totally shocked whe I wear my hair straight since the shrinkage is so severe. Ah well....... Gotta love that natural hair! I know I love mine regardless.

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

I'm not natural but I hate shrinkage too with my new growth, but it lets me know that my hair is longer than what it really is. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Oh how I recall this relationship. I'm not even comfortable w/really str8 hair. It just doesn't feel right or natural to me. I hated the way my hair looked after a press and it didn't revert much so wash days after having salon hair was wonderful. I did grow truly tired of reversion which is why I crossed over, but I think hair that still has that natural texture is so beautiful and luscious.

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

ITA. Yesterday was my weekly wash day, so I decided to stretch my hair alittle by doing a light press. This was my first press since I’ve been natural and I was apprehensive about putting heat to my hair. But to my surprise my hair has grown significantly since my somewhat BC, but with shrinkage, you would never know.

In any case, I am enjoying the length of my hair with the light press, but unfortunately I am going to have to enjoy it while it last, because I’ve been on a NO HEAT challenge for months. So it looks like I am just going to just have to deal with the shrinkage.

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

It irritates me to no end sometimes, but right now I'm fine with the shrinkage. I'll just straighten my hair when I want to show its real length.

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

I like the shrinkage /images/graemlins/smile.gif But as of now Im finding that I have absolutely no desire to straighten my hair.

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

I had about 80% shrinkage...one of the reasons I texturized.

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

My main irritation is that my hair does not shrink uniformly. /images/graemlins/wallbash.gif So no matter how long it gets, my crown section shrinks 3 times as much as the rest, giving me a weird shape if I try to airdry loose. I love most of the aspects of my shrinkage though, especially the volume it gives me. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

I don't mind the shrinkage itself because it makes wearing it out pretty easy- but I have to admit I have gotten frustrated since I can't tell if my hair is growing or not since its forever in its shrunken state. I try to just not think about it though- I should be getting it pressed soon just so I can see if it really has stopped growing or not.

Yep, same for me. My shrinkage makes my hair look too short and I am not used to short hair so I won't be wearing it down for another 6-8 months. /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

Has anyone heard of this stuff called Extend a Perm from Soft and Beautiful? It has no chemicals in it and it is supposed to help loosen the curl pattern, prolly due to the cones in it. I am considering trying this.

Co-Signing. I'm still in transition...and I have been holding back on the BC because I know that I won't like the length that my hair is at right now. I have major shrinkage even with the relaxed ends on. I have about 5 inches of new growth that shrinks up to about 3 inches. I have been bunning it...and I will continue to do so until I get about 10 inches of natural hair. I'm happy with my texture...it's just that where it falls at right now that I'm not comfy with.

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

I like my shrinkage a lot more now than I used to. In the past, I hated how my hair would feel on my neck when it shrunk. And it seemed like it didn't really "fall." If I nodded my head, for example, the back of my hair raised up like a helmet.

But as it got longer, shrinkage wasn't so bothersome. Now I kind of think it's fun to have the too extremes /images/graemlins/smile.gif (Also, my hair rests lower even when shrunken now. No more "helmet" feel.)

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

For the most part it doesnt really bother me but there are times i wish my hair would show its true lenght. But since my hair grows "out" instead of "down" i guess if i want to see how long it really is i would have to press it. But i think its cool having the ability to go short one day and long the next.

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

Mixed feelings? Nope!
I'm totally embracing my shrinkage /images/graemlins/cool.gif
Without it (shrinkage), I wouldn't be able to achieve my "Shake & Go" curls!... which I LUV!!
Although I have to say that I'm curious to see my hair/length after a roller set!

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

I love my shrinkage! It helps give my hair volume and keeps it out of the way for now. I love shocking people when I pull down a lock and will have more fun as it gets longer.

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

I feel this way sometimes...somedays, I love the shrinkage, somedays not. I guess it depends on my mood. On days like today, I really want to show my length because of the type of work day I have ahead of me. Other days I will "hide" my hair with my shrinkage, it's really fun sometimes to watch people's reactions when my hair is soooo much shorter than it was the day before. I too, have been on a no heat challenge so after today, I will probably be back in my pinned back bun style.

Re: Sometimes I love it,sometimes I don\'t

I don't mind the shrinkage. My hair is past midback but shrinks up to my neck. The shrinkage keeps my hair from rubbing up againsts my clothes which promotes breakage.
