Okay, so far I found out that mucopolys are related to sulfur and aloe vera.

Back to googling...

interesting...

I'm quoting Bronze_brown of NP.com. She posted on the 3rd page of a thread called "Surge Plus,???".

"[Here's Bronze_brown quoting a definition she Googled.]'mucopolysaccharide: Also known as glycosaminoglycans. This is a large class of ingredients that includes hyaluronic acid, which is found universally in skin tissue. These substances, in association with protein, bind water and other cellular elements so they remain intact, forming a matrix that holds skin cells together.'

[Here's Bronze_brown speaking directly.]If anyone is interested in finding out more about muccopolysaccharide, as well as natural (cheaper!!) sources of the compound let me know, and I'll post more information that I've collected. I went ahead and bought the Surge today although I had this nagging feeling that I was spending extra money to get less of the key ingredient - the natural sources (aloe vera is the main one) are much richer in muccopolysaccharide and can be bought for a MUCH lower price. Nevertheless the raves on LHC persuaded me, so I'll see how this works out."

I have a lotta questions now that I'm considering treating my scalp with aloe vera concentrate instead of Surge.

1. Would the mucopolysaccharides be as effective at stimulating cell proliferation if the proteins aren't present? Surge has extra keratin and vegetable proteins, but I doubt that aloe vera concentrate does. In the studies cited about aloe vera concentrate helping wounds heal faster, only the products from the leaf were used.

2. How vital is biotin applied topically as opposed to taken internally? I assumed that the biotin ingredient in surge is a gimmick, as it's not high on the ingredient list. But then again, Aloe Barbadensis gel comes after biotin on the Surge 14 ingredient list.

3. Is the aloe vera concentrate oily or watery or sticky or runny? Guess I'll find out when my shipment arrives.

If you look up mucopolysaccharide on Encyclopedia.com you can get a more technical description.
I did a little Googling, and from what I understand, mucopolysaccharides are a class of polysaccharides, but there are also different types of mucopoly's. A lot of them contain sulphur, such as Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine Sulfate. A lot of these are used in the same way as MSM (many of the search results were pages about joints and cartilage and arthritis and stuff). Also, when I searched for mucopoly's in conjunction with "hair products," most of the results were for things like Nioxin and the like, products that help thin or balding hair. So I guess it makes sense that something like SURGE, which is supposed to promote hair growth would include it. Oh, and another name for mucopoly's is glycosaminoglycans (GAG's)--in case you want to do a little Googling of your own it might help to try both names.

OT:
While searching for mucopolysaccharides in hair products, the second most common types of products I saw were all-natural products (apparently mucopoly's are good to put in conditioners and stuff). I came across this website. Scroll down and look at the ingredients to the conditioners. $19 is a lot for 8. oz, but seriously,

Yummy hair products!

That's my conclusion also. There are different types of mucopolys.

But which class of mucolpoly does Surge use?

Since some users experienced burning sensations, I'll go along with the consensus that Surge uses the sulfated mucopoly.

Sulfur containing products are said to stimulate hair growth... after reading about all this products that supposedly aid hair growth.. since im a chem major i turned to some ACS (American Chemical Society) Journals and read up on some research that has been done on compounds that stimulate/aid hair growth and sulfur containing compounds are definately it in that respect. Also my reading confirmed that biotin, L-cysteine, amino acids and proteins (esp. hydrolyzed proteins) also stimulate hair growth...

Most importantly it said most sulfur containing amino acids and hydrolyzed proteins bind to the hair, serve as decoys for a variety of damaging agents.

I'm on my third bottle of Aloe Juice. I pour two capfuls onto my scalp, massage then let it sit for about 10-15 minutes before rinsing out.

My whole purpose for initially buying the juice was to get the benefit of the mucopoly without the complaints experienced by Surge users.

SVT,

Have you noticed an increased growth rate since using the AV juice?

Megonw,

Please post your results w/the AV concentrate too!

For some reason, sulfur worries me. I associate fire with sulfur.

I think the negative effects from Surge come from it containing the same ingredients that are in reconstructors...it's just like spraying a reconstructor on your hair daily. Just my humble opinion.

My hair has grown but I can't say it's due to the aloe juice because I still use my rosemary spritz. The aloe does make my scalp feel comfy and adds definition to my hair if I leave some in.

You have to be careful when leaving some in. I left too much in the other day and my roots were sticky and stiff. It rinsed out easily though.

OK, do you use the rosemary spritz on your scalp only or all over?

Sticky stiff roots from just the aloe vera JUICE? *scream* This sounds like Sta-Sof-Fro all over again. Not good.

I'll pray every night
angel.gif
that the aloe vera concentrate arrives oily/runny (like EVOO!) and not syrupy/sticky like Sta-Sof-Fro and not watery like Surge. If it's too thick, I'll dilute it with EVOO, since that's the only oil I've got on hand...

My plan is to apply the aloe vera concentrate to my scalp daily (=when I remember to) in the shower. I'll still only going to conditioner wash or rollerset every 2-3 weeks, though. So there'll be build up.

Just the scalp. It tends to make my hair dry if I spray it on my hair.

My aloe vera juice is watery, runny. Not as watery as Surge, I don't think. Lety us know how the concentrate works out.
