Re: THE PERMED ENDS ARE GONE!

I probably made about 10 braids for my braidouts. Keep in mind I did the Big Chop almost 3 weeks ago. My hair is too short for those styles now. However, I can achieve small flat twists that look nice when I take them down. My new goal is to achieve a total of 5 inches of hair by April 1st. So far it's growing pretty fast.

You go girl!!!

I can't believe you did it. I'm so proud of you. Now, I really feel like a chicken because I only gradually cut off the relaxed hair as my natural hair grew out. I've been transitioning for almost 7 months now and I have 5 more until a year. I said I was going to relax it at that time but now I'm rethinking it. I can't wait to see your pics. We're just so proud of you (sniff)

Re: THE PERMED ENDS ARE GONE!

Okay ladies-I am going through some hair trauma here-
I cut my hair Saturday night and there were still some relaxed ends on it. I did not have good success in styling that day,and I attribute that to being too tired (I washed it at 1:00am). On Sunday night I rewashed it and did a braidout. It came out bad at first, but with some manipulation,it was nice, except for those straight ends. I went to school and this girl was like-"Tennile,you look like a model!" I was like oh my-thanks! Well, my braidout did not last long because it did not dry thoroughly that night,so the result was frizz and waves. I went to my stylist and she cut more of the relaxed ends. I got home,re washed my hair, anticipating that the straight ends were gone so I could style it better, but I was end for a suprise-the ends were still straight! So I assumed it was scab hair and cut more-still straight. I begin to notice that I was actually cutting new growth hair and I stopped. I proceeded with a braidout with smaller sections and I had to roll the ends
angry2.gif
Well, the hopes were high again until I took the braids out- oh no! It did not come out right at all! I could not believe it,since after I washed it I diffused my hair so that it could dry and then braided it up. My hair came out as it did before-frizz and waves.
cry3.gif
At this point I was almost in tears, but I did not give up hope. The only thing I could think of doing was something I thought I would not have to resort to with natural hair-fry it. I blow dried it, bumped the ends with a jumbo iron, blow brushed it, and placed hot rollers in it.
cry3.gif
I tried to see if my hair would do fine with 2 strand twists-it didn't it unraveled. My goodness I
love.gif
my natural hair, but if I am not able to do the typical, low maintenance styling as I assumed, what will I do?

Re: THE PERMED ENDS ARE GONE!

Perhaps the ends are straight because your hair doesn't have enough length yet to make a full well rounded curl from root to end? You'll probably see changes as you acquire more length so that the ends can become more unified witht he rest of the hair.

First, congrats!

Hmm, if your twists came out and wouldn't stay in, you may be a type 3. You should post your type or describe your hair so that people with similar types can give info, because the care of natural hair varies by a LOT depending on what type you have.

But on the braidout - I think the problem the first time was that the braids didn't dry. I think the problem the second time was that you didn't start with wet enough hair. For a dry braidout to work on some hair, I think you need to do the braids pretty small and they have to be in for a long time. When your hair is wet, it is the most moldable, flexible (that's why it is so weak when wet, it can take any form.) so I think for optimal results you start with wet/damp hair and only take out when completely dry.

And I recommend, don't cut more of your ends! Most naturals have some straight strands on their heads, and I also agree with Bodaicea.

Thankyou all so much! When I get back,I will ask who has my hair type-I can explain it to you real quick-
It is a mixture of wavy, curly, straight and frizzy. I don't know what category that falls in.

Re: THE PERMED ENDS ARE GONE!

I bet your hair dfoes not look as bad as you say. Why don;t u come by tonight?

Re: THE PERMED ENDS ARE GONE!

Hmmm...your texture sounds like mine.
wink.gif
As far as your length, I would say you are at the same place as me. I have about 10"-12". When I chopped, my hair went through kind of a "shock" if you will...I think because it was so used to the straight ends. Scab hair also played a part, I immediately noticed a difference when those 2-3" were gone. Now you may or may not have scab hair, some ladies don't...but it is possible. Being that you were continuously trimming...STOP!...
poke.gif
...the relaxed hair is gone. When you have time, you need to rinse your hair out or wash it...detangle it, and let it air dry in it's natural state, so you can get an idea of what you are working with...You need to see if it dries quickly, tangles easily, shrinks, etc. This is one of the upsides of the twa, you learn to work with your hair @ every length. But don't get discouraged, it is a learning process!
kiss.gif
We are all here to help. As far as right now, at your length, if it is not holding twists or braids like you want, is your hair long enough to pull into a bun? If so, then do it! Rinse it, allow the shower stream to coax it back, smooth some gel through it, tie it down for 10 minutes and go! You will figure it out, trust!

I wanted to ask you this, too. I plan on transitioning until I have enough natural hair to pull back into a bun, then cutting the last of the permed ends off. I'm thinking I might be able to do that around 18 months or so, or at least pull it comfortably back into a puff with a scrunchie or barrette or whatever, but I dunno...are you able to do it after 16 months? I know everybody's hair grows at a different rate, but I'm trying to get a general idea...

Re: THE PERMED ENDS ARE GONE!

girl don't cut away your natural hair. I am most definitely not a 3 and when my hair was natural before, my twists would undo as soon as I let go of them. I never did twists after that but I suggest you use some kind of wax on the immediate ends and then coil it will your finger.

Why did you blowdry your hair ? You have beautiful hair , are you afraid to just do a wash and go ?

Re: THE PERMED ENDS ARE GONE!

I'm wondering if the unraveling is occuring b/c your hair is freshly cut. I know when my hair has a fresh trim and I twist it around, it will just unravel all by itself b/c all of the ends are even. There's no unevenness (even slight) for the pieces to attach to. I would say try the braidout and roll the ends for a while. I think it may just take a bit for the hair to get used to being on its own.

This is what I was thinking, too, but when I noticed others would cut their hair, they were able to do twists, braidouts, etc. I dunno...

Re: THE PERMED ENDS ARE GONE!

Thankyou Micarae-you are solid as gold.
kiss.gif

Micarae and Serena-yes I can do bun,but it is a jacked up bun! My hair is cut in a wedge or whatever and the top front parts will not stay in the bun.
Speaking of cutting-I talked to 2 stylists today who suggested that I cut the permed ends, regardless of how many times I told them that every straight end I cut yesterday was actually natural hair. I know you ladies told me no more trims, heck I told myself that too,but I guess I am relying on the stylist more than myself,a common situation between stylists and clients.

No prob sweety...IF and only IF you trust the stylists, adhere to what they say. If you don't trust them, take heed, they could "cut" away all your hard earned transitioning work.

Remember, YOU are ultimately the person that will be taking care of your hair at home. Email me if you have any questions lady.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. That has happened in the past when I've had hair cuts; one sure fire way I'd know my hair was getting longer again would be when it'd all fit smoothly back into my trusty ole bun with no bits sticking up or out.

Maybe you could try putting your hair into one braid, then coiling your braid into a bun? That just might keep the shorter sections in place. And you might get even more control of the short sections if you tried pulling your hair into a scrunchie before starting the braid. Just a thought...

Re: THE PERMED ENDS ARE GONE!

Congratulations!!! I bet it's gorgeous!!! You did well to transition a long time too so you wouldn't have to cut it all!! Great patience!! That alone is an inspiration to many of us even without the pics! Tell me, did you find that once you passed a certain mark with your natural hair transitioning, did it really sort of take off and start growing like crazy??? I am experiencing this now and I only have 1.4 inches of newgrowth! I'm going to Big Chop in June/July when I have at least 4 - 5 inches!! I NEED at least that much! Wow! I can't wait to be at the 9 - 11 inch stage! My hair has always grown fast but I find it seems to grow much faster natural. I don't know why - it was healthy when relaxed too though.

Yup-my hair started springing forth, especially when I adhered to 2 main things: MOISTURIZING THE NEW GROWTH AND NOT COMBING MY HAIR WHEN IT WAS DRY! My hair (straightened) reaches to my neck (in the front) and little bit past my shoulders in the back, but my "wedge" cut is so jacked up that it looks uneven.

Re: THE PERMED ENDS ARE GONE!

Oh yeah, today I may be posting pics around 4 or 5 pm. Stay tuned...

Re: THE PERMED ENDS ARE GONE!

I agree that the twists prob. unraveled because of the blunt cut ends, this is also why braiders don't like to braid hair that has just been cut it doesn't hold the braid or twist like it should.
