I'm a newbie :) w/a question. I'm 18 weeks post relaxer and I want to transition. I have about 2 inches of unstretched new growth, but the texture of my hair is different in various areas. I know this is normal from reading some of your posts. Should I be able to tell by now what my texture will be or do I need more new growth? My mom and sister are both natural and I thought my hair would look like theirs but it doesnt. At what point will I know what it will be like? I hope this makes sense. Any answers would be appreciated.

Thanks

My "real" texture didn't start showing up until about six months post relaxer. I'm still not 100% of my curl pattern because I won't be able to really tell until I cut off the relaxed ends.

FWIW, my curl pattern nor my texture is like my mother's or grandmother's hair either (they're both natural).

My hair texture is changing the longer it goes. I agree with cheleigh. It may not be a true representation until you are fully natural. My hair is a confused mixture of my mom and dad so I dont think I'll look like anyone on either side.

My hair is 'finding itself' or 'havign an identity crisis.' Everytime I look at it I think its soemthign else. Its nothing like my mothers or my grandmothers but closer to my dad's than anyone elses. The longer it grows the more I can see the texture but typing it exactly still eludes me. I feel close to 4a but Ive had alot of peopel tell me HECK NAW and I feel too nappy to be a 3c so I just accept my hair as being original. Besides knowing your texture wont really help out too much.... Your hair is genetically different from everyone else on this planet (unless you have a twin) so it will react differently than anyone elses hair to certian products.

I think it took about a year for me to tell what my true texture was. You might want to search threads about "scab hair." Those might be helpful in answering your question.

I think when you have atleast 3 inches or more of new growth that should give you a clue on what your true texture is. I have about 4 inches of natural hair, its still the same texture which is 3c/4a.
