If you are going to do the fruit veggie challenge make sure you put more emphasize on the veggies and not the fruit. The one serving of fruit for example one large banana is two fruit servings. One medium piece fruit is one fruit serving. One fourth of grape fruit juice is one serving of fruit. One fourth cup of dried fruit is a serving(raisins, prunes) The normal size woman probably needs maybe 3 servings of fruit a day. If you take in to much fruit you might gain some weight. Fruit has natural sugars which are good for you but they pack on the calories if you eat too much.

How many serving would one 4oz fruit cup/container be?

I usually try and eat one of those containers daily - they have cut up melons, cantelopes, pinapples, grapes etc.

I am trying to figure out how many serving this translates to.

With all due respect to the OP:

I just wanted to say that it's tough for us to have too much fruits and vegetables. There are vegetarians, vegans, and raw food eaters who almost exclusively eat fruits and vegetables, and I have yet to meet an overweight vegan. I think most of us know we'd be better off if we consumed more fruits and vegetables because there would be less room for things that aren't healthy for us. Many fruits contain wonderful enzymes that aid digestion as well as nutrients exclusive to certain fruits. Vegetables are certainly important as they tend to be packed with vitamins and minerals. I think a balance of the two is the healthy. For instance, today I had 2 servings of celery, an apple, a plum, a cup of blueberries, a serving of cabbage, and a serving of carrots. This type of balance is FAR healthier than any junk food available.

If you have to choose a snack, and the options are Cheetos or a bowl of grapes, the grapes are a better choice...even if you've had 6 servings of fruits and vegetables that day.

From personal experience, the more fruits and vegetables I have, the better my hair, skin, nails, body, etc. A healthy diet should be done in conjunction with regular exercise anyway so I'd venture to say that the majority of women who replace junk food with fruits & vegetables and workout regularly will be healthier as a whole and will probably be able to reach an ideal weight.

No discredit to the OP...just the .02 just a psuedo-vegetarian. :)

Amen sister! lol. No really, you are right. Im on weight watchers and at first I was just staying within my points but having too much processed foods, especially snacks. They want us to eat at least 5 servings of fruit and veggies a day. Im the type who barely ever eats either. Like I might have a banana every week or two lol. But this past week Ive started eating all of my servings and Im soooo full that there isnt room for me to go off the plan and binge eat, etc. Im very satisfied now. Im still allowing myself a treat here and there, but now that Im focusing on eating my fruits and veggies, it is much easier to stay on plan and Im rarely ever really hungry.

Even funnier/more ironic....Im at work right now and Im mad at myself that I didnt pack some more veggies to snack on lol. Most veggies are no points so we can have unlimited. Im actually craving some carrots or cucumbers right now! A fresh fruit smoothie sounds awesome right now as well.

:yep: The fiber in fruit & veggies make them VERY filling. That's part of the reason they're essential to a sound weight loss plan because you naturally consume less because you don't have room to spare for junk.

Kudos to you for being on a program, btw.

I would recommend not worrying about the # of servings of fruits or vegetables anyone eats. Some diabetic patients have REVERSED their disease and have gotten OFF of daily insulin injections by eating nothing but fruit and vegetables in their raw state. Please see this thread...http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=94755

I ate nothing but fruit and veges for 30 days last summer and I actually ate something like 20 servings per day. I didn't gain an ounce....I actually lost 20 pounds and felt the best I have ever felt in my life. I of course ate these foods raw, but I encourage everyone to eat as much of these foods as possible. You will be suprised that your appetite for junk and artificial food decreases dramatically if you fill up on the good stuff first.

Now where can I find out about the fruit and vege challenge... I am all over this one!!

Also, I didn't get to make the LA meeting, and if I'm not mistaken, you're weren't there, but I DO want you to come to the next one...and bring your baby. :sekret: She is SO insanely cute, and I'm sure she's grown a lot since last April. Hug her for me! :)

ETA: You're having another baby?! Yaaaay! Congrats! And I didn't know you were a marathon runner! I was just saying today that I want to run the LA Marathon next year. I gotta PM you!

Found the thread, and just joined the challenge!! THANK YOU!!!

The baby is much bigger than when you last saw her. We also missed the LA meeting this last sunday. I was in church thinking about you all.

Definately gonna try to do LA MARATHON next year ( I will probably walk it because I am going to be breastfeeding still by that time). I was up to running 12 milers when I found out I was pregnant. I am bummed because this year they changed the course and it is suppose to be much faster than the previous one. I wanted to run it in 4 hours 30min vs my 2004 time of 5 hours and 30 minutes. My plan is to NOT GAIN to much weight this pregnancy by eating mostly fruits and veges and lean protein vs gaining 60 pounds last time (YIKES).

Anyway.. thanks for starting the fruit and vege challenge. My daughter is a fruit lover. She eats tons daily and stays very active. Her skin and hair are beautiful and she still smells soooo sweet. It is amazing!!!

:yep: That's awesome! Congrats again. You had a GREAT finish time...wow, I'm thoroughly impressed and would love any tips/advice you have for a newbie.

That's great that your baby loves good foods already. She'll take that with her as she gets older, and you won't have those fruit/veggie fights. My mom started me early too, and I STILL eat fruits and vegetables like they're going out of style.

I'm not talking to the vegans when I said to watch your portions but to the average person who going to add five servings of fruit to their diet and not decrease the amount of the other foods they take in. Remember calories in calories out.

I think what you guys are going is great, I was just stating one should focus on more veggies than fruits when we are doing the challenge.
