So far, I've used coconut oil on my new growth by parting my hair and dabbing it on after my leave-in, while my hair is still damp. Is this the best time to do this or should newgrowth be treated daily? And are there easier or better of doing this? Please share your tips!
I do what you do but with castor oil, it really makes my new growth soft. I wash my hair twice each week so it gets the treatment each time and that's usually enough till the week before touch-up -- then I apply the oil each night.
Coconut oil is absolutely great for striaghtening the newgrowth. I've recently started using again HHIAB. I like it becuase it's very easy to spray directly on the scalp. So I can just separate the hair with my fingers and spray on the newgrowth.
I've found that coconut oil especially is very moisturizing and is great at straightening new gorwth, however it really only works at retaining moisture if my hair is wet. So I only apply it after washing. Any other time and it feels like it's just sitting on top making my hair LOOK shiny, but not holding in any moisture.
Another thing that I like to do to give my hair some good moisture is inbetween washes I'll spritz my hair with water (bottled water), add a little ELasta QP mango butter (a little goes a long way so don't be heavyhanded) and then seal it all up with some coconut oil or NTM serum. I mostly do this on my edges (nape area especially) because these are the areas that lose moisture the quickest for me.
I am 4b and I confess I don't do anything special to my new growth, primarily because can't stand oil/grease on scalp. I condition wash twice a week and after towel drying, I leave-in a mixture of nexxus headdress, giovanni direct and rosemary essential oils from roots to ends, rollerset and hood dry on cool. In between washes I use very very tiny drops of aloe on my ends to help keep moisturized and prevent breakage. I DO massage scalp every night -- don't use anything, just dry massage my own scalp oils before wrapping for bed. I wait 8-10 weeks between touchups and this method works all the way thru.
Hmmm... washing w/KeraCare poo helps my new growth tremendously by making it "lay down". Once dry, if my edges look rough then I'll apply some mango butter and it ends up very smooth, soft and straight. Other than that, I don't do anything special to my new growth.

Wow! These are all great tips!
And I learned about the coconut oil from you Armyqt!
BTW, what's HHIAB, Healthy Hair Butter? Do you work it in your new growth after spraying or leave it as is?
I dont do anything special to my new growth although I have noticed that when I use NTM silk touch leave-in followed my wonder 8 oil my hair and my new growth are softer. BTW if anyone hasn't tried the silk touch leave-in give it a try I think it's worth it

This oil combo is excellent for airdrying. Coupled with Salerm 21 leave-in, and maybe 30 minutes under the dryer in a ponytail, my hair comes out so soft, shiny and bouncy. The only drawback is the price. I ordered the 8oz bottle (22.49 +tax and shipping). By the time I was done, I paid 30 bucks for it. So I'm gonna gather all the oils from FNWL as well as the d-panthenol and work on duplicating this combo myself.
Oh and to answer your question. I also spray a little on my hair length and ends. After, I comb through with Denman brush and fix into ponytail for drying.
That oil combo looks great! Thanks Armyqt! I may give that a try with my Keracare Essential Oils and add a few drops of what it doesn't have in it, like the Ylang Ylang. I'll see how it compares to the coconut oil.
I started a thread on non oils for treating new growth - I'll just post it here. I just tried the Fantasia IC Hair Polisher as recommended by one of the ladies here on my new growth and so far it's working pretty good although it hasn't loosened a lot. It's very thick in there and I wondered if something that wasn't an oil would work better or not on new growth. Would any of you ladies know?

Thanks Hairlove. I've noticed you have recommended CD Healthy Hair Butter for a long time now. I'll have to check that out.
The last few washes after applying leave-in to all of my hair, I sectioned made small parts with my fingers and applied extra leave-in on the new growth and then combed and detangled my hair from the scalp very easily. I noticed this too helps to loosen the new growth waves.

I also put oil on it after putting in my leave in.
I use a combo of oils... hot 6,wgo,coconut oil, olive oil and peanut oil..
I mixed the hot 6 and wgo to help the wgo smell better, and I mixed the others in one day when I was bored. I'll be darned if it doesn't work better than they do when they are separate.
Oh yeah, I only put stuff on my new growth on wash days. The texturized part is what needs extra moisturizing, the natural part does just fine with deep conditiong, leave-in and oil.

I bet mixing a bottle of HHIAB with a jar of coconut oil would be WONDERFUL, hmmmmm
... okay ...with a dab of sheabutter too. I think I have a little experiment on my hands!
