EDITED:.....was it a technique, product, etc? How or what does ur hair feel like as a result? if it's a product that's the problem, which one? I have my good rollersetting days, & i have my BAD ones. Like last night. I knew i should never use a DC with a heavy cone in it cuz my fine hair can't take it. So as a result, my hair has no curl, no body. It's just laying there. --So, I mainly want to know HOW u ended up with the bad rollerset/flatiron job. What did u do wrong and what was the result of ur hair texture, swing, body afterwards. --

Yeah I can do a mean rollerset but with flat ironing (smh) I just didn't know what tha' hell I was doing...If I have a bad rollerset (rare) it is due to experimenting with some kind of product..

I would love to master flat ironing someday ....

I just had a bad roller setting experience that caused me to go into "big braid" mode for the rest of the year. I always use an ittty bitty IC Fantasia serum to seal/protect my ends..but for some stupid reason, I decided to use olive oil. My set was so stiff I just co-washed it out and put a big french braid in the back of my head. Thank God!

1. Wrong product, in my case Infusium 23
2. Too much product

I achieve my best rollersets by applying only Nexxus Humectress and water (to keep wet).

I'm still a work in progress when it comes to rollersetting. When they are really bad I will either finish up with a flat iron or a silk wrap. Sometimes the silk wrap works, but if my rollerset comes out to puffy I have to resort to my trust flat iron.

ETA: I have 2 problems.

1- For some reason I can't seem to get the tension down. So I end up with loose puffy curls.
2- I mess up with not smoothing my ends sometimes. Heck..it's hard to "see" in the back of my head. When that happens it's frizz central.

I've never had a bad rollerset, but I don't really rollerset for curly styles, I always wrap after so that hides any problems.

I don't know how to flat iron so when I try and fail, I just put my hair in a braid or two.

thx for responding. But to those who only told me what u do with ur hair AFTER a bad rollerset/flatiron....what did u do to ur hair that gave u the bad result? Im more interested in finding out HOW u ended up with the bad result, and how ur hair turned out. Ex: frizzy, lifeless, no curl,....etc

  • too much product
  • hair not wet enough
One tip I learned from here is to make sure the roller itself is wet. That eliminates the frizzies on the ends of my hair. HTH!

This will be about my rollersetting.
If they come out bad usually too much product when applying leave in, was stiff and you could just see the product.
Also another time I used to many smaller roller, it made the hair too big.
Another time I didn't detangle good enough fine tooth comb is something I need to do.

Best results is good size rollers, only two leave in products, fine tooth come for detangle a long with a wide tooth

I've never had a bad rollerset in my life, but I am bad at predicting the weather. There's nothing like doing an awesome job on your hair only to have it rain on your way to work :-(

I have mastered the technique for roller setting and flat ironing my hair. Bad rollersets/flat ironing jobs are usually the result of the products I used. I either used the wrong product, too much product, or not enough product.

I couldn't blow dry my hair properly for the longest. I was clueless on how to blow it straight within a minimal time and have the least amount of frizz. I also had issues on flat ironing too and styling. On the other hand I have perfected the roller set and that's all due to Gennifer's roller setting dvd. So I figured I have to find other hairstyling techniques on dvd. After doing a bit or research I found a few instructional dvds that were very helpful. They took a while to find but I am so glad that I did.

So when I cant do a hairstyle I take it as something in my technique is wrong. For me it helps to use hair dvds. Youtube is great and all but the vids aren't always too clear and some people lack teaching skills. Plus I always have the dvds to pull out of my hair journal when I need them. Even though most hair dvds dont give specific brands on products the give a general idea of what to use. So I've also corrected myself on what products to use to achieve certain styles with the help of my hair dvds.

thanks everyone and for those who edited! Very informative. I think i'll start wetting my roller like someone said. But i think another cause for my terrible rollerset last night was the fact that i didnt clarify. Which was stupid on my part. I didnt think i had that much buildup on my hair since i poo'ed last week. So i basically rollerset my hair with buildup already there....plus new product. Ugh

I can't do rollersets to save my life. It's not the products I use, it's my technique. No matter who's technique I try on YT, I just can't do it.

Now I can flat iron my hair like a pro. The only time I would mess up is when I would use ORS olive oil polisher. That would make my hair dull and tangled. Now I only use Aphogee green tea spray, some GVP CSI, and Fantasia IC. I'm still paranoid about if the GVP is a heat protector or not so I just use the IC in case.

If I have a bad rollerset it is because my hair wasn't completely dry before I took the rollers out.

My flat iron skils are sucky overall.

I agree with the Ladies who said 2 much product= bad rollerset/flatiron job. If I use too much serum on my hair when its wet, its a wrap.
*It won't come out frizzy... but greasy rather than silky, heavy rather than bouncy.

But strangely enough I can use as much lacio lacio leave in as I want and it always comes out light and bouncy either way.

Just wanted to add that the same happens to me when I don't clarify well, greasy heavy hair.

Put some argan oil on it and wrap it real tight so it goes straight. If that fails, wither bun or wash it again in a day or so.

I have fine hair as well. I had the same problem and had no clue why for months. My hair turned out dry. Greasy and dry. I was using Motions to DC (cones) and an alcohol based foaming wrap (Motions). I switched to Nexxus for my DC which was cone free, and what a world of difference. Keracare humecto was good too but I can't afford it so now this month I'm trying out GVP balm and I like it. My hair likes cones for styling but not DC. Also, the heat was too high on both my dryer and flat iron. I lowered the heat on both.

Now what I do:
DC w/ GVP balm
Rinse out and add NTM leave-in and GVP silk infusion serum
Hooded dryer on cool setting
Add a little almond oil
Flat iron hair that's 90% dry on not so high heat

I have a non-name brand iron by the way. I have absolutely no money right now, but I'm so excited that even with little money, after following people's advice on this forum, I can have hair that looks good too.

What I did wrong:

1. My hair is not wet enough. I now make sure the section I am rollersetting is dripping wet, if not, it will dry poofy.

2. I make sure to use a quarter size of the product of my choice. Any more is really asking for problems.

3. Gennifer (MaCherieAmour) speaks of a good method called: Roll-roll-pull. You roll upwards as opposed to under and roll, roll, pull and keeps the hair taut.

Well the one style that I just can't get to look right is the flat twist out. It takes too long to dry especially if I try to roll the ends. I think that I get a bit tired of waiting for it to dry and I ruin the style. Im still not sure what products to use on it.

My previous problem with blow drying at first was not drying the hair a bit before using the dryer. My hair needed to be damp not wet. Then I tried using high heat with a round brush with out making small sections. I also tried using straightening balms and blow dry creams but they always left me with stiff hair no matter how little I used. I finally found a way to make the best blow out. I clarify first. Then use a moisturizing shampoo and moisture/protein deep condition. After that I just put on a thermal shield and I blow dry with a 9 row denman brush. Not only does it take me 15 to 20 minutes, but my hair is straight enough that I dont have to use a flat iron. Before it was a 2 hour job that looked frizzy and needed to be flat ironed to look decent.

For roller sets the only issue I had was trying to use setting lotion. I cant find a good balance with it. The ones that dont need to be diluted (pantene relaxed and natural setting lotion)I can use straight. A few spritz of that and my hair is stuck to the magnetic roller while some parts are perfect. But I must admit the shine is unrealistic. My hair looks like shiny black synthetic hair. If I use lotta body it doesn't seem to do much. I get better results with a leave-in.

Too much product with flat ironing or rollersetting will always mess me up
If my hair isn't wet enough rollersetting then it will look a hot mess.

My flat iron technique is pretty solid so it is always a product choice when it goes haywire.

Too much hair product and hair not wet enough will kill a rollerset everytime!

I don't use a leave in when I roller set. I use a quater size of Mizani Thermasmooth Serum and I have a spray bottle with water in it. I saturate each section with water when I roller set. I flat iron and my hair comes out bouncy and shiny every time! And my rollersets are far from perfect.

I DC to make sure my hair is moiturized so I won't need the leave-in. HTH!

Flat-Ironing GONE WRONG:

Skills --Were Seriously Deficient + Too much Product = Disaster!:perplexed

*had to leave it alone*:nono:

For a bad rollerset, I've found that I used too much product or I didn't let the set completely dry (didn't sit under the Pibbs long enough).
