Wig wearers, do you ever notice that you get some strange looks?

I use to wear a wig when I lived in Germany and traveled to Italy. It was hard to swim in the ocean or pool and be ready for dinner or shopping (this was before I knew about LHCF) so I rocked this short wig when I took trips. I miss that wig. Haven't found one yet that matched me so well. It was so cute and I had to throw it away b/c it got to old.

My opinion is if you find a wig that matches you and and your personality that is when you will look great in one.

Wig Pic attached below:

What a cute pic of you!

Anyhow, I really dont think wigs are that big a deal anymore, just like Glamazon stated. Heck, Im thinking about buying me one to switch it up some. I had a half wig that I would wear sometimes, but I lost it moving. And as far as men not liking them and thinking its yucky or a HAM, I dont think that would be the case unless he was fruity or gay IMO. :look:

There are many people who buy wigs and just put them on and that can cause problems. IMO, you can have a realistic looking wig, but many factors come into play. The hair quality, color, density, and cut. I believe those are very important. I wore a lacefront for quite some time.

She must have been wearing a lacefront! I'm talking about the girl that I saw w/the nice, realistic looking wig. :yep:

I've seen chicks with weaves get way more strange/WTF looks versus the ones who wear wigs...its all about swagger and style I guess...Its an accessory right? Its all about how u rock it. Personally the guys I know would rather deal with a female in a cute wig with a GREAT head of hair underneath versus a weave...I'm just saying...at least a wig can be snatched off at will and he can run his fingers through your tresses versus having something glued/sewn/bonded to your hair.

I just bought my first wig and will be rocking it tomorrow and if anyone has any questions about it I will gladly inform them of the price and where to purchase it...its an accessory and I could careless if they know if it grew out my scalp or came of my lil styrofoam head.:lachen:

I am an avid wig wearer and I really don't mind that people think or know it's fake.

As a matter of fact when I am about to get a new wig I say some some of my lady co-workers " hey i am gonna go get some hair tomorrow "
I get compliments everytime.

I am very comfortable wearing them. :yep:

I too wear wigs, mainly half wigs.
I have never received a weird look. I just won't wear one that don't look good on ME. Just like certain hairstyles don't suit me, the same goes for wigs. :yep:
My coworkers did not know I was wearing wigs until I came in with one that was longer than the one I had on the day before. Then I spilled the beans but if someone asked, I'd tell them.

I wear a half wig and I get compliments on it all day everyday. I've worn a full wig and same thing. You have to STYLE it to suit you. Plus, the wig doesn't wear me, I wear the wig. With or without a wig i've never had a trouble commanding positive attention so. :ohwell:

Why are you so concerned?

i had a full wig that had bangs in front that i would wear every now and then... i have pics in my Fotki. it was very realistic. i think partially because i soaked it in ACV right after i bought it to take off that "wiggy" shine, and then washed it and let it dry. also i got scissor-happy with it, and trimmed the bangs and sides to fit my face. i snipped the ends all around to look a little more jagged (not a clean-cut line). some people thought it was my hair pressed out... one guy who works at the Subway i frequent thought i had relaxed my hair and he almost cussed me out until i SHOWED him it was a wig... :lachen:

then again, i wasn't wearing it everyday and trying to pass it off as my hair. and there are people who think my natural shake and go is a wig until i tell them it's really mine. :look: so i don't care anymore, people will think what they wanna. i also have a friend who is the best ever at sporting half-wigs like they are her own hair... i couldn't tell at first. now i only know because she TOLD me they're fake. she doesn't wear outlandish styles/lengths/colors, the textures match her hair and she blends it very well.

All wigs look "wiggy" to me. Even if I think it's a nice style or compliment the person, I am still aware that they are wearing a wig.
Lace fronts are an exception to that.

I would agree. And I really think y'all are giving people too much credit. Unless you are in the know about hair or it's a REALLY obvious wig, most people do not know the difference. Even some black women. The wigs that are out nowadays do not look like your grandmother's wigs. Most people at least assume that it's weave. My mother didn't even realize I had a wig on one day. She was like Oh you did your hair! It's cute! I was like this is a wig. :look: She thought I had put some weave in my hair. And she's seen all my different wig and weave styles. Hell if I can fool my mama I can fool anybody. :lachen:

I love SENSATIONNEL INSTANT WEAVE . They are half wigs and cost only 19.99 and look great. I own 2 of the ones in pics below.

My husband hates wigs and weave hair but thinks these look good. He doesn't mind me wearing wigs if they look good and believeable.

Plus he can not complain if I am ready to go before he is.

I do too I wear a well applied lace front. Last month I was at the post office and this AA woman asked me how I get my hair so straight . .I told her it was a wig she said  "thats a wig?! Ususally they don't look that natural." She didn't say it out loud she just "lipped it" Also AA female customers ask me the same thing and what I put in my hair and I get the same response.

If the LF wig density isn't right, the color is off, or the quality of the hair is poor it won't look nice and you WILL get funny looks.

I was looking at that one in the middle in the store a few weeks ago but they didn't have any colors I liked. :ohwell: I wore the 3rd one for a while my freshman year of college. People thought it was my hair. That was the first human one they offered in the Instant Weave line.

I hate when that happens. Try Hairsister.com maybe they have the color you want. Although I hate not seeing things in person when it comes to hair.

Wow, The 3rd one was my favorite too and I got compliments all the time when I wore it. When my husband and I joined a church, my fellow chior members thought that pic #3 was my hair too. I quickly let them alll know I was a Instant Weave junkie. LOL!!!

They made that one just right. I miss that wig and gonna buy a new one soon.

Strange Looks? Yes!!! from Men how are checking out the length; white black latino and asian. That was weird! From females... oh yes !!! I mean the ones who hated because I never played the wig as if it were my real hair, I chose styles that really looked good on me. My son's hate the wigs though.. they can always tell. They say if the style looks too perfect it's a wig.

But I started with wigs when I went thru divorce. My hair was coming out in handfuls. I grew my hair out of the relaxer and slowly rebuilt, cutting off the wisps of damaged hair until it got reasonably healthy. I live in Maryland and this metro DC area has some of the hardest water. So with all that I've been trying to do on my own;(before I found LHCF) it's been the best protective measure I had for my hair loss.

maaaan, my half wig is cute honaay! you cant tell me NOTHING when i put that thing on. i havent recieved any 'looks', only compliments, even from females AND shemales (heehee). im cute regardless though , so i could care less what other females think. they will hate on you if you bald, got natural hair or if you rocking a wig so hey, do you. i think what makes a lot of wigs look bad , is that they have the wrong cut and too much shine. you can always take it to a stylist to shape it to match your face. and for the shine, someone on here said that they brush a little powder through it. but if YOU think you cute, then it dont matter what nobody else thinks about it.

i love wearing them! some are over the top, meaning, really fluffy and curly. i only wear them when i'm going out and all glammed up. the wig(s)i wear on a daily basis, people dont even know its not my hair. they are similar to my length and style. those close to me really dont even notice. i decided to get a trim now while i'm wearing them because in the summer this thing is coming off!!!

Wig it up! I mean, what's the big deal?! You know you bought a wig, some ppl can tell it's a wig, then we all on the same page. lol. I love my recent one...actually my first full (i always where the 1/2 ones) and I love it (check my siggy).

But I have another and it's way to shiny for my taste...so thinks for mentioning the bolded. I will mos def do that. I was just thinking how I can rough it up a bit to dull the shine :spinning:.

WOW! Thanks for the replies! This have been a very informative thread! It turns out that the answer is... It takes a confident woman to wear a wig anyway!  Thanks for setting me straight! :yep:

Lovelylocs

There was an old episode on of the view and star jones was commenting on how to getthe shine of out shiny hair pieces ir hats as my momma called em! lol..she said use a cheapy hairspray,it will take the shine right out.I find after wearing it enough the shine will go away on it's on anyway

Not all wigs look bad, just like all real hair doesn't automatically look great. I think if it makes you feel good, you should wear it!

I wear a wig almost everyday and people always ask me if its my real hair. But i will say this, some people do look a mess, especially the dark skinned girls who try to wear a blond wig. Now im not picking on dark skin women because im dark skin myself(and love it) but there is some stuff that is not make for our skin tone.

I wear wigs for a few weeks when on the last few weeks of my relaxer stretch. I have pics of it in my fotki (second wig NOT first). It's fairly close to my actual hair length and texture. The top of the hair is a bit too shiny, though. I guess I need to get some vinegar or powder to dull it a bit. I'm fairly confident in it because I get a lot of complements. Most people think that it's a weave if they don't think it's my real hair.

ETA: I definitely agree that you have to style the wig and make it your own. :yep: I have done a lot of different styles with the wig since I got it. At first I wore it like I bought it from the store (like in the pic). Since then I've done pin curls to switch it up. I also alternate the bangs. I think the next thing I will do is crimp it with a wave iron.
