Would it be weird?

To ask a beautician to relax only the front, sides and crown of my hair but not the back? The hair on the back of my head is naturally straight and IMHO, no relaxer is needed.

I am fearful of over processing it or I'd attempt it myself.

A beautician may try to make you feel like your request is weird, but you know your hair better than anyone and let's not forget that when we go see hair stylists we are paying them for the services that we request. When you make your specific request make sure that you can see what s/he is doing the whole time. Also, I wouldn't put it past some of them to try and charge more just because they would be doing something different (although they will actually be using less product).

I dont think there is anything wrong with telling your stylist what you want because:
a. You are paying for the service
b. it is your hair
c. its a good test to see if he or she would listen to other things you want done in the future.

you may want to call before hand and say this over the phone though...so in case she refuses, you wont have wasted your time going over to the salon

Just my humble opinion...you know your stylist better than i do :yep:

you know what i think is weird? we posted almost the same thing at almost the same time :lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen:

No that wouldn't be wierd. It's best be upfront about exactly what you want. That way you don't end up with something you're not happy with.

Since going natural several years ago, I learned that the texture in the back was different. Since getting a relaxer after this, I have thought each and every time that I would ask, but I'd chicken out once I get there.

Once I asked a beautician if I bought my own shampoo/conditioner (nioxin to thicken my hair) would she use it? I was told that it depended on whether or not the shampoo/conditioner interfered with her products. So this kind of put the brakes on me asking too many things.

i dont think its weird but it was definitely harder for ME personally to enforce it. I tried telling the stylist to perm/relax my nape last and she refused. she kept saying that to start from the back is the way to do it and that she couldnt start from the top. so after like 3 times of trying to explain it to her, I just gave in. It probably woulda been better if she spoke full English (i just went to some local Dominicans).

But that was just my experience, I think if you go to a stylist who speaks full English and you explain fully why you want this done, you'll be fine.... (not that you should really have to explain yourself if you are paying for a service)

Thanks so much, This is an excellent suggestion.

Oh, LOL.

A while back I asked my beautician to do my nape area last (because it is so fine) and they did, each and every time. The next beautician I went to (because I moved) told me that my hair was under processed. So, now when my hair is wet the back is wavy, while the rest of the hair is straight. (actually this is okay by me since I don't want this area relaxed anyway ) I was told that this is because the back area is the hardest to take, regardless of the texture. It has something to do with the heat generated from our skulls ???

I usually don't have trouble speaking my mind, but for some reason I have a really hard time asking for what I want at the beauty shop.

For example:

Can you please put my part on the right, not the left (or vice-versa)
Please don't blow dry AND flat iron my hair.

I guess I don't want to end up with jacked up hair :lachen:

Okay, okay, okay, I understand you are paying for the services, but if you have that many requests and that many fears, then you might as well do it yourself. The stylist has a job to do as well. And even though you can make requests, the requests really do have to be reasonable. I mean bringing your own shampoos and other products in is a bit too far.

It's like asking the chef at a restaurant to cook your hamburger meat well done and then giving him the skillet to cook it in. :nono:

 I'm not sure if that would be the same thing, but I get your meaning :yep:. What I was thinking was that I'd spent a lot of money on those products and I since I go to the shop more than I do my own hair, maybe I could get the beautician to use them. If she said no, it was fine. I just thought I'd ask. I haven't been back to the shop since I asked, but now I guess I'll get to use them myself.
